Card Cascade for Innovation Ultimate now available!

Card Cascade is a stackable storage-and-play system that makes it much easier to set up, play and pack away the game, now adapted for Innovation Ultimate. The designs are my own and are entirely free for you to download and print for your own use.

This is why it really helps with the game:

  • The base game and every expansion are instantly available with little setup
  • The vertical cascade effect uses the lid as the base and reduces table space to play
  • Ages are laid out sequentially across 3 or 4 boxes, with room for achievements as well
  • Each expansion is marked with a removable topper that helps keep focus during play
  • The boxes provide compact, secure and stackable storage when not playing the game
  • There are separate designs for sleeved and unsleeved cards
  • There is room for the reference cards and player mats at the back of each box
  • A single box holds all the cards for either 3 or 4 ages, so you'll need 3 or 4 boxes to hold 11 ages plus misc achievements etc in the 12th slot
  • Printing requires no supports and the design fits on most printers. The design for 4 ages, sleeved cards, requires a big printer.

How it works

Each Cascade is a box that contains sliding card holders and is closed with a lid. Each cards slot can hold up to 15 cards, and a single Cascade has 4x5 card slots.

To play, remove the lid and insert the removable pushers from the back into the keyed slots. Then, put the box on top of the upside-down lid, so the pushers lift each row of card holders into a stepped cascade via the hole in the bottom of the box.

Next, remove the toppers that protect the expansions only for those expansions you want to play with, and leave the others in place. This mechanism means you won't put a card in the wrong slot by accident.

When you’re finished playing, put the toppers back on the expansions, lift the box out of the lid, store the pushers in their dedicated compartment at the back of the box, and slide the lid back over the top. The cards are now held securely with little wasted space.

Box Labels

Each box has room for a slide-in label in front and on the side. The front label is the same size for all boxes, and the side labels come in a few standard sizes. The label width in mm is part of the standardised box “model number”.

Storage space

If you print 3 Cascades with 4 ages in each, the volume it needs is comparable to the full Innovation Ultimate box: The Sleeved version is 18% larger, and the Unsleeved version is similarly smaller in size than the original box.

The Cascades won't fit in the original box in either configuration though.

Where can I get this?

Download all of the print files for free on Makerworld. This also includes detailed instructions on what to print, how to set it up, etc.

If you like it, please like, rate and boost the model so others can more easily find it!

Card Cascade for other games

Card Cascade was originally designed for Dominion, but I am slowly expanding the list. In addition to Innovation Ultimate, these are the games currently supported:

The Card Cascade model numbering system

Each Cascade has a unique model designation like M5·15·10·45·Sl, to make sure it's possible to refer to each design in an unambiguous way. This is what it means:

  • M = Medium width, i.e. 3 horizontal card slots. Small is 4, Large is 5.
  • 5 = Five sliding card holders, one for each expansion.
  • 15 = Capacity of each static front pocket, where you store the base cards
  • 10 = Capacity of each holder slot, always 15 for Innovation
  • 45 = Width of the side label in mm.
  • Sl = Sleeved cards (Un = Unsleeved)

The same designation is used consistently throughout the system so that boxes, lids, pushers, holders and accessories can always be matched correctly, including between different games.

Does this work with other versions of Innovation?

I have tried it with the Asmadi version, and the card sizes are the same so it works just fine. Post your own experience below!

Will there be changes and updates?

Nothing is currently planned, but if you have a good idea I'm open to it :) What do you think could be better?

The one thing I might do is publish versions with room for fewer expansions. Would that be useful?

I look forward to your comments :)

Card Cascade v6.5 now available for Dominion

Card Cascade makes it easier to store your Dominion sets, and reuses the storage boxes for play using a unique cascade mechanism. The designs are my own and are entirely free for you to download and print.

A load of small changes makes this a much better version than the original v6.0, based on feedback from both my own and others' experience. The changes were already published for Compile and Food Chain Magnate, but Dominion has more than 20 configurations so upgrading it is a lot of work :)

This is why you might care:

  • It’s much easier to get cards in and out of the right card slot
  • The lid positions the pushers further apart, for better stability while playing
  • The holders are more stable and easier to print without artefacts
  • The pushers are stored closer together at the back, making a useable back pocket available
  • The left and right front pockets have spacers that mean all card columns align nicely
  • The box uses around 10% less filament to print

The external dimensions have not changed since v6.0, so you can reuse components if you like, though I'm reprinting the box and holders for my own use at least. The one exception is the Token Holder, which needs to be a bit smaller in this version.

You can see the full set of changes in v6.5 in r/cardcascade. Please join the discussion.

Download all of the print files for free on Makerworld.

I hope you like the improvements! Comments below please!

Compile update for Card Cascade 6.5

After playing with the original version of Card Cascade, I’ve made a bunch of small changes that add up to making the whole thing much nicer to use.

The highlights are these:
* It’s much easier to get cards in and out of the right slot
* There is room for the rules in the back pocket
* The holders are more stable and easier to print

The external dimensions have not changed since v6.0, so you can reuse components if you like.

FCM Special Edition Organizer

Hi! I saw your FCM cascading design and I absolutely love it. I'm working on an organizer for the special edition of the game, and I've run into an engineering problem that I think you might be able to help with if you were interested. I'm not rich, but if you were willing to help out, I might be able to offer something as compensation. No worries either way though!

Link to my project: https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/3751796/constructing-a-special-edition-organizer

The basic idea of my organizer is to house all of the components in a specially built wooden crate with minimum setup time. The design I'm taking inspiration from has a smaller box inside of it that houses all of the employee cards, all separated and ready to go from the start. You can see it here: https://www.theniftyorganizer.com/products/food-chain-magnate-ketchup-expansion-with-milestones-cards-full-wooden-storage-solution?pr\_prod\_strat=e5\_desc&pr\_rec\_id=912f6ecf2&pr\_rec\_pid=5678470135967&pr\_ref\_pid=5678485930143&pr\_seq=uniform

I wanted to keep that for my own design, but even reducing the height of the components as much as possible, it's not feasible to store the cards standing up. Before the employee cards, I'm sitting at 23.9cm of height, with 1.2cm on top of that for the thick wood I'll need for the outer box. I want this all to fit into a Kallax, so that only leaves about 8.1cm for the employee cards.

My first idea was to simply angle the cards to reduce the overall height of the employee box. To achieve a slant, I tried making the cutouts wider to lean them back. Unfortunately, after a lot of trigonometry, even with an interior space of 32x36.6cm (and a 0.3cm wall thickness), I didn't have enough run to get everything in. Thus, back to the drawing board.

If I had a system like yours that could lay in a 32x36.6x(a max of, but anything shorter would be great)8.1cm space that could expand into a display of all of the sleeved employee cards, it would solve the height problem and the quick setup problem. Luckily, the employee cards are the same as for the base game, just with different art.

My question is, would you be willing to design a part/parts to achieve this? You'd obviously have the rights to the design, whether you want to sell it or distribute it for free. All I'd want to do is use one for myself and talk about it in my thread for anyone else who wants to use my organizer. And again, I'd be happy to offer compensation for your time/materials (just nothing too crazy, I'm a delivery driver lol).

Thanks for reading!

Card Cascade: Modular, free store-and-play system for Dominion

With Card Cascade, the lid is also used to push up rows of card holders so they form a nice cascade of cards during play. This allows all the cards to be on display while playing, while keeping the size of storage boxes to a minimum. I've made a 30-second video that shows how the flip and push works.

There are 8 box sizes, each in a sleeved/unsleeved version, and I believe this is enough to hold every set of Dominion. If you have a large 3D printer, just 5 different sizes are needed to hold all sets; if not, you need 5 different size boxes and some sets get split in two. They are all the same height so stack nicely.

This is the evolution of a project I posted about a few weeks ago, and I think this version is much better :) In the old version I had just 3 sizes of box, and it turned out that it was both fragile and risked damaging the cards. It also didn't support smaller printers, sleeved cards, tokens, player mats, slide-in labels and other nice-to-haves that this version does.

The full details of the project and all the different permutations of boxes are available on MakerWorld. I hope you enjoy printing and storing your Dominion games as much as I do!

I'm still tinkering with it, and as I don't have all of the expansions it's possible that something isn't quite right. Let me know, and I'll try to fix the issue as soon as I can.

Feedback, questions and comments are very welcome. If you think this is useful, please like the model on MakerWorld too :)

Card Cascade for Compile: A free store-and-play system

This is a free, 3D-printed system that allows you to store your Compile game safely while making it fast and convenient to both choose what Protocols to use and pack away the game at the end.

I published the first version of Card Cascade for Dominion, a few people suggested I make it available for Compile (and other games), and I'm happy to say that I think it works really well for Compile. There are separate versions for Sleeved and Unsleeved cards.

If you have a 3D printer, check it out on MakerWorld, where there is much more detail about how it works and everything you need to print this design. If not, maybe you know someone who does?

Update 17 July: There now are 6 versions available: 15, 18 and 30 protocols, each in sleeved and unsleeved versions. This should allow you to store your sets exactly as you'd like (if you have the right printer :)

Card Cascade has undergone a few iterations in the past few months and is now v6.1. I haven't got any more changes planned, but I'm always open to suggestions and look forward to hearing what you think.

Game on!

[Food Chain Magnate] Store-and-Play system: Card Cascade

Food Chain Magnate is an awesome game, but organising the occupations for play takes up a lot of table space.

I have adapted Card Cascade to handle this in a way that works well for me: The occupations are stored in compact boxes that can cascade out to display the cards while playing, by simply sliding the lid under the box and pushing up the card holders.

There are designs available for sleeved and unsleeved cards, for "normal" size printers and for large printers. The boxes are fairly compact but do not fit inside the FCM box, sorry.

A Card Cascade could also store the Milestones, but the titles of those is in the middle of the card rather than at the top, so I'm still noodling on how to solve that problem :)

The designs are available for download on Makerworld. I hope you like it!

Card Cascade v6.5 update - significant improvements

Based on feedback from users and my own experience playing with the first versions of Card Cascade, I have made a number of changes that in sum makes the whole system much nicer to use, easier to print and use less filament.

I will be updating each game in turn over the coming days, and post about it. Here are the changes since v6.0:

  • Card Holders: Easier to get cards in and out of the right slot
    • Taller in the back so they nestle together and form a continuous line
    • Added lips bridging one holder to the next. This makes it much less likely that you put a card in the wrong holder, or even between holders.
    • Simpler, more regular cutouts that are easier to print well.
    • Tighter margin with the sliders so they wobble less when in use. Particularly the tallest holders could wobble quite a bit.
    • Added finger holes to make it easier to get entire stacks of cards out of the holders.
  • Box: Back pocket more useful, and connects with new Card Holders
    • Added padding to the left and right front slots, so cards sit neatly in front of the rising card holder slots.
    • Added lips that bridge from the box to the first sliding card holder.
    • Made the back pockets deeper and wider so they are more useful for cards and accessories, and added a finger cutout.
    • Removed around 10% of the filament needed to print, by adding holes to the back inside wall.
  • Lid: Provides more stable support, easier to insert
    • Moved the outermost pusher slots further towards the edge to provide a more stable base for pushing up the card holders, particularly useful for narrow cascades. Now aligns with the hole in the bottom of the box.
  • Existing v6.x components remain compatible with these changes, so you can choose to reprint a subset of components if you wish to upgrade

I don't currently have more ideas for improvements, so I'd love to hear whether these changes make sense to you and how Card Cascade works for you.
