Needing help finding a good mount and antenna!

Hello, i have a 05-09 mustang gt that i want to put one of my cbs in to, and i want a pretty tall antenna too. Im thinking atleast 7-10 feet of antenna. (Car is in picture). I would prefer a way to mount it to the trunk, and hold a cb antenna and base. If any of you have one for sale or know of one for sale that would work please let me know. My cb going in it is a Galaxy DX 959. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Gear question

Howdy gang, I'm looking for advice on where to find some used CB gear that's still in good nick. My first car in over a decade and there are plenty of long road trips in the works.

Specifically, I'm looking for a Cobra (75?) the one with controls on the handset that comes with a PA function.

I also need a small but powerful PA horn / PA speaker solution to fit under a hood with very limited real estate - a two door hatchback. Question: Will a PA work through the trumpets of a train horn?

Static

All I hear through my radio is static, very rarely do I hear any actual voices, could it be the way it’s setup? Or is it just because not a lot of people use cbs anymore

Hilltopping Adventure

Made a trip to Mount Greylock in Massachusetts. Barefoot on my McKinley with a Stryker antenna I was able to make 80 mile ground wave contacts and shoot a little skip.

Question about height of antennas

I've seen lots of ham radio videos on YouTube where the antennas have been ground mounted for example on 20 m. So why can we not use ground mounted antennas on 11 m for example a large Yogi that's not 30 ft into the air. In the context of DX?

Uniden 980 SSB bad SWR 25’ Cascadia

•Driver side mirror mount
•Fiberglass 3’ antenna at ~45° tilt mostly clear of windshield
•brand new coax

I have had this CB for almost 4 months now and not once have I been able to use it.

I first tried with the stock antenna and got such high readings I just left it off for a few weeks until I got an antenna and coax mounted, and still got bad readings in a different way.
My SWR is not reading in a way for me to tune the antenna yet.

SWR is high on 1 and 40 using CB meter

I ordered a proper SWR meter and grounding strap

The shop said they never see guys use a grounding strap on their antenna and suggested the CB itself is the problem.

The CB turns on just fine and picks up weather, but fails each diag.

I almost have enough points for a Cobra LTD from loves, but I am still not convinced my Bearcat is the problem yet.

Does any of this look wrong already?

Having a working CB is still a great asset in 2026 but I cannot for the life of me figure out what the hell I’m doing wrong here.

There has to be something wrong. There’s no way my SWR is that perfect. Is it?

I’ve been trying to get a healthy SWR for years! I started with a Wilson 2000 on the stock mount, then an aftermarket mount with a DIY grounding strap as it’s on a plastic arm. It was slowly getting worse so I went back to the stock mount/coax with a firestick 2. Over the winter my SWR slowly degraded to 8.5.

Over the winter I worked on a plan, Project DXing Hail Mary (I know, I know, I just couldn’t resist the fun name). A friend gave me a 2019 Cobra Classic Nightwatch with a broken mic, so I found a CB shop operating out of a shipping container to have it fixed and tuned, then I picked up a better coax and a proper grounding strap. I verified everything was properly grounded to the frame, no ground to the antenna its self, then fired it up!

The S/RF and calibration functions worked fine, but except for the occasional hardly visible twitch, SWR did nothing. Thinking it was broken, I got an external SWR reader. At or below an SWR of 1. I tried my old bearcat 880, it’s probably fried from 6 months of use with an SWR of 8.5, but it’s fancy digital display showed 1.17. Either it’s not reading any power coming back because it’s fried and not putting any power out, or I have a near perfect SWR. I reinstalled the cobra and called for a radio check; the results were… inconclusive. That story could be a post all its own, so I’ll include it separately at the end.

After YEARS of struggling to get my SWR below 3 AND my antenna still being on a plastic arm, I just can’t believe I have a near perfect SWR. Is it possible something is giving me an inaccurate reading, or do I really have a perfect SWR?

~

The radio check story:

I’m in an area with low CB usage, so when i called for a radio check I only got one “you’re good” from someone circling the lot right in front of me. I responded with “Thank you, have a wonderful day.”, but she must have heard “Thanks Dude, have a wonderful day” because she started chewing me out, saying “Who are you calling a dude? I’m a chick, not a dude”. Her transmission was coming through clear, so I responded “I know, I’m also a woman so I get it, but I didn’t call you a dude. How well am I coming through on your end?”. She was too intent on chewing me out to answer my question, so I shut off the radio. I obviously wasn’t coming through clearly, but it’s unclear whose radio was at fault.

Looking for a Cb to listen in on truckers while on road trips

Hi All. I am not very knowledgeable about CBs, and I do have a pretty decent GMRS in my Van to communiacte with friends on road trips.

I want to get a CB to listen to truckers on road trips, and I was thinking of Midland 75-822 and a good-quality antenna mounted on the roof of my van. Good idea**?** Or any other suggestions? (I do prefer portable, but I will get a mounted one if it's really the best route to go)

I don't want anything to be complicated**, and** something easy to use.

I was thinking about this combo:

  1. Midland 75-822 Handheld CB Radio & Mobile CB Radio and
  2. Midland - MXTA26 MicroMobile 1.5 inch Base Diameter 6DB Gain Whip Antenna with NMO Great for Off-roaders, overlanders, Farmers - Max Power120W Boost Signal Output - 5/8 Wave - 32” Antenna and

Why do some people treat these systems like HAM radios?

Context: I’m a heavy equipment operator in a surface mine on the east coast. We use CB’s in all of our equipment for safety-related communication, which is what they’re designed for.

Fairly often I’ll hear people on the CB from miles, sometimes even states away (most definitely using illegal setups) using the frequency just to try and find people to talk to. This, for one, is aggravating, as I have enough to focus on as it is without some guy going “hellllooooo can anyone hear me” every five minutes, but it’s also dangerous for us because if there’s an emergency or someone is calling out their position in the mine so that we don’t hit each other, they could get stomped off the radio by these people.

And no, I can’t just turn my squelch up, the way our mine is laid out means we frequently have obstacles between us and have to have the squelch low to be able to hear each other.

So why do people do this? Is there any real legitimate reason for this or is it truly just people who don’t feel like getting a HAM license. Sorry for the rant, thanks for reading.

Holy magnet strength....

So...uhh... how do you folks pry these off? On the plus side, I dont have hail dents under those anymore... Any 4Runner drivers out tuere running a 102 with quad magnets? Looking for tips on placement. I may have accidentally plopped this down off center. Oops. Should I ditch the spring? For grins I checked swr and was getting around 1.5 where it is.

EDIT: Moved behind roof rail. Magnets not flush thanks to the humps. Still holds strong but I'll be goofing around with placement to see if I can get a little better swr readings. Will the magnets not getting a good flush connection cause issues? Should I try one of the Tram tri mounts? Here is the current placement https://imgur.com/a/l9ksVu8

Edit 2 - Moved to the rear for flat surface. Getting 1.4 swr flat which I'm good with. https://imgur.com/a/GNMZLvV

I’m new and have a question

I’ve purchased a Cobra 29 LTD Classic from eBay, and it’ll be coming in tomorrow.

The listing shows the following, and I had some questions about how this works. I’ll be putting in my Peterbilt 389 for work.

I don’t know much about what I’m looking at in this description, I was hoping someone could instruct me how to tune this radio with my 6ft whip antenna without messing something up. And I don’t want to destroy my coworkers ears so if I need to make certain adjustments I need to know how to do that too. I’ll do my best to answer questions un the comments but for the most part I don’t know much about watts, swing, modulation, calibration or anything. I’ve done my best to look things up online but I’m having trouble finding answers especially with these modifications listed and understanding thank you very very much.

Ground your base stations

Just a friendly reminder that a ground rod is a critical component to a base station. I moved into a new house a few months ago and I’ve just had my antenna set up temporarily. No grounding on the antenna or power supply or Radio. Went to plug my coax in today and received a mighty zap from the case of the Radio. I haven’t determined if it’s voltage leaking from the power supply or what but ground your stuff lol. I could actually see an arc from the PL 239 connector to the radio

I should probably mention the antenna mounted to an aluminum mast that’s partly buried in the ground so the antenna is most likely grounded that that’s why it only shocks me if I’m holding the coax.

Poor reception

Hello!

I am experiencing issues with very poor reception even after tuning SWR to be below one on channel 1 and 40. I am using a president Andy II radio and a k30 35” whip mounted in the middle of my roof. Pictures included. What could my issue be?

Swr help

So I have a post in this thread but I don’t know how to add pics after the fact but bottom line is I’m having swr issues even tho I feel like I’ve grounded everything properly(reads at a 3). I’ve ground away the paint at the antenna mounting point and ran a wire to the frame and body during 2 different test and nothing changes. I have a roof mount but it’s the wrong connector so could someone either give me a better idea on how to ground the antenna or point me in the direction of the proper magnetic mount to get.(in the pics the red and black wires without the harness tape are the power and ground for the radio itself)

Best option for modern station wagon, best of the best hard mounted antenna?

Hi, I am looking to get back into CB with my new car, its a wagon and has a giant metal roof, and I'm trying to find the absolute best antenna setup I could get for it, with the catch that it can't be too long for neighborhood streets and city parking garages, and I would prefer to not drill any holes in the car.

What options do I have other than "buy a wilson little will and slap it on the roof"? Maybe edge mounts that clip onto the hatch, a door or something? I'm inspired by visiting dayton hamvention recently and seeing all the ways people mount antennas on their cars.

Thanks for any information!
