I used a quartz clock movement as a days-long mechanical timer for a picture-frame reveal
I built a picture frame that changes from one physical image to another at a preset time, without a screen or microcontroller.
The quartz movement turns a capstan extremely slowly, winding fishing line. At the chosen time, the line pulls a zipper slider; the zipper releases a latch, and a 25 g falling weight draws the cover image down to reveal the second picture.
The clock isn't displaying time here—it's acting as a cheap, very slow timer. The reveal can be set hours, days, or weeks ahead, and most of the mechanism is 3D printed.
I'd be interested in this sub's thoughts on the clock side of it: is there a better way to couple to a quartz movement or protect it from excessive string tension? I currently keep the line load low and let the latch carry the release load.
