Pinole vs Concord for raising a family — which would you pick?

Deciding between a house in Pinole or Concord, want real opinions before we commit.

Which is better for raising kids overall?

Schools — how do they compare?

Downtown/things to do in each?

Commute to South Bay (Dumbarton) — which is worse?

Any regrets or things you'd pick differently?

Would love input from anyone who's lived in (or compared) both.

Goodbye, old friend

Moving out of Concord and just want to shout out some legends both dead and alive:

EDIT: I CANNOT BELIEVE I LEFT OFF ALPINE BAKERY. EASIEST PLACE TO BURN THROUGH $100 ON THE BEST PASTRIES AND CAKES YOU'LL EVER HAVE. TEAM MACAROON VARIETY PACK POR VIDA.

- Flying Colors Comics - Joe is a comics and Concord legend who is the most unassuming dude on the planet. Has be in the running for longest continually operating business in town. New location, same lovely people.

- That mini golf spot on Clayton Rd. Not the indoor place, the outdoor place. RIP

- Caffino Drive Through coffee spots where the Large Iced White Mocha with a Quad shot got me through many a night. RIP

- Hoffman's Reptile Shop - never set foot in that place but a local icon.

- Digger's Diner - I think you're gross but my whole family loves your nasty ass food so I go and am disappointed everytime but that, in and of itself, is beautiful to me.

- Bambinos v. Skipolinis- I feel like this is the true old timers Concord argument. I love them both but Bambino's has the full bar soooooo.

- the batting cages at the Willow Pass Softball Fields - always been a cheap and great way to kill an hour on the Northside of town.

- Bourbon Street Grill - low key great place to see a show and sneak drinks when you were 19. RIP

- Time Out Bar - low key great place to see a show and sneak drinks when you were 19. RIP

- King's Donuts - God Tier. Real one's know.

- Waterwold NOT Hurrican Harbor.

- Momoyama Sushi - best sushi place in town even though drunk dudes coming out of the liquor store made it dodgy when you had to wait for a table. Never die. I love you with all my heart.

-Hunan Restaurant- I will not hear anything other than glowing reviews. My favorite restaurant in town, period end of sentence.

- Half Price Books - the old location. RIP

- El Patron Tacos - best in town. Bonus points because I used to buy whipits at the sex shop in back when I was 16.

- Patty's Cheese Zombies - nuff said

- Captains Chest - last cash only bar for years, kinda mad they take CCs now, but still top 3 dive bar in town.

- Buchanan Fields - I hate golf but love putzing around that course.

- shout out to dude who used to sell us schwaggy ditch weed by Roundtree Apartments in '96.

TIL 15% of all black soldiers that were killed during WWII, were killed in Concord during the Port Chicago Disaster

The Port Chicago Disaster was a explosion on July 17, 1944, at the naval ammunition loading base in (what is now )Concord . The blast killed 320 people, most of them young Black enlisted sailors who had been assigned the work of loading ammunition under segregated conditions with little to no training. The tragedy further exposed racial discrimination in the military and led to the famous Port Chicago Mutiny, a significant event in the struggle for civil rights within the U.S. Armed Forces. It remains an important part of Concord's history because it occurred in our city and helped influence the eventual de-segregation of the military. The unequal treatment continued after the disaster. I have read a lot about this disaster but this was one of the most disturbing parts (to me). When Congress considered compensation for the victims' families, an effort was made to reduce payments after it became known that most of those killed were Black, resulting in families receiving less than originally proposed. (Google John E. Rankin, he was a racist, anti-semetic POS) ... https://portchicagoalliance.org/history.html
