$1 pickup at the flee market - fix or dump?

montgomery ward, picked up at this condition at the flee market for $1.
i brought it home and plugged it in and i had to leave for a few hours.

now i can tell something is shorting out due to the sound it makes and the screen wont turn on and the side panel wont light up as it did in the photo before that happened.

I know the risks of fixing a CRT, I DO NOT plan on fix it myself since i dont have a death wish, but i do wonder if its worth fixing it? is the tv known for shorting out in a certain part?

any tips will be appreciated!

I learned that I can find how many hours my CRT has been used. I found this one thrown away in 2023. Apparently it hasn't been used much.

Neat!

Dell P1130 (Sony CPD-G520) Vertical Sync fail?

I was using my monitor for a few hours when the screen started doing this. I filmed it for a few seconds before I shut it off, when I turned it back on it displayed a white horizontal line in the center for a second before it shut off again. Now it will not turn on past POST, and just flashes a yellow status light.

Is this vertical sync failure? I want to repair this, what will I have to do?

What's inside a CRT, makes cracking noises and goes off with a huge "BANG!"?, Part 2

Hello again,

As some of you pointed out a possible bad cap, you were right. Found this f***** on the power supply board.

So my theory is :

Power instability due to faulty cap. Power instability causing warped image. It gave up with a bang, no power.

Go to say tho, the noise was a bit dramatic for such a little cap

Fixed my monitor. Got a few questions now.

Hi everyone. Today I fixed my Philips CM8833 mk ii by replacing the flyback transformer. It was from my dad's old amiga and the stickers on the inside of the shell say 1992.

Replaced the old AT2079 with the new HR7533. The old one was such a pain to remove but I think it is just because my soldering iron isn't the greatest. I did have some problems with the new one like some plastic screw holes got in the way of a big capacitor so I simply broke it off, and the pins didn't allign with the holes and needing to be bent. One of the pins was just completely too short so it needed extending with a wire and lots of patient soldering. It was so frustrating. Then I needed to adjust the screen and focus potentiometers until I was happy.

Now it is just as beautiful as I remember lmao. I'll replace the power switch and horizontal and vertical ics when they arrive.

Now I have a couple of questions. First is when it powers off there is a bright flash and it looks like there is a big burst of lightning inside the screen. Is that bad?

Second I think I have some issues with convergence. You can see it with the red highlighted text in 240p test suite. Is that something easily adjusted or should I just quit while I'm ahead cause I might do more harm than good.

I'm so happy with it right now. I am so excited that it is fixed and I can't wait to play some stuff on it finally!

As for my last post about moving it, I don't think I can honestly. It doesn't fit in the suitcase, and with my dodgy soldering to extend the pin in the transformer, I don't want to risk that coming undone and ruining it again. So I would have to take it to my new place another time. But thanks for everyones advice about moving it!

sorry for the bad floor photos :P

New TV at the right time

I had ordered this little off brand, no name gpx tvp2 since I wanted one of those portable, battery powered CRTs to bring on trips with me and the such, and it just so happened to come in right when we experienced a nearly 20 hour long power outage after a nasty storm. While nothing else worked and my phone couldn't connect to data, this little guy was right on time to keep us entertained and up to date on the storm. After the power came back on the cats were a big fan of it to.

Sharp C14R12 - Slow startup, distorted image, burning smell and now an orange spark inside. Is it repairable?

Hi everyone.

I’m new to CRTs and don’t have much electronics knowledge, so I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

This is a Sharp C14R12.

Here’s what happened:

-The TV was working perfectly.
-I made the mistake of leaving a speaker on top of it for a few days.
-The image became distorted, but after removing the speaker and leaving the TV unplugged for a while, it came back to normal.
-Later, the problem returned on its own.
-Now the TV takes a long time to power on. It seems to “wake up” very slowly.
-When it finally starts, the picture is heavily distorted (photo attached).
-I also noticed a burning smell.
-Today I tried powering it on again after it had been unplugged for several hours. While it was starting up I saw a small orange spark somewhere inside the TV, so I immediately unplugged it.
-My HDMI splitter and HDMI-to-AV converter work perfectly with my other CRT TVs, so I don’t think they’re the cause.

Someone suggested it could be a B+ power supply issue, but honestly I don’t really understand what that means.

At this point, do you think this TV is still repairable?

What would you do next? Should I remove the back cover (without touching anything) just to inspect for obvious burned components, or is there something else I should check first?

I really like this TV and would love to save it if possible.

Thanks!

Updated Basement Setup

Hey everybody! I'm just wanting to share my current set up. It's taken sometime to get everything set up to my liking but I think I've got a layout I'm really happy with. Just a place to unwind and live in the nostalgia of a better time. Thanks for looking!

Eu estraguei a minha CRT? :(

I recently found this old B/W display, I'd like to test it and connect it to my PC if it works. There anything I should know or before I power it on, and what kind of connector/adapter do I need for it? Thanks!

What's inside a CRT, makes cracking noises and goes off with a huge "BANG!"?

First time posting, hello everyone!

For my first post, I'm offering this question.

Sadly, I don't have the answer yet but I suspect the flyback transformer departed from this earth to trinitron heaven...

I've left it discharge over a few days and will open it up tomorrow. Suggestion and ideas are welcome!
