The truth of applying as an A-Levels student for MBChB

CUHK has rescinded its previous policy of giving conditional offers to A-Levels students. Coupled with the requirement for 95% UMS as the minimum entry requirement and 97% UMS as the entry for GPS, the bar has always been high.

——
Through word of mouth, I heard news that MBChB only allocates 20 seats for ALL A-Levels students, locals or overseas.

This year, students with 4Astars and a UMS of 97% failed to get into MBChB, despite PASSING the 97 UMS entry barrier for the prestigious GPS program (a 97 UMS is apparently considered similar to scoring 4 subjects at 5**). Only those with 98-99 UMS were allocated seats for joining MBChB.

I find it ridiculous to imagine that getting 6 five stars in DSE indicates an entry into Med, but NOT a 97% UMS for IAL. Sure, 6 five stars is comparable to 90 UMS across 4 A-Level subjects, but the additional effort required to bump a score up to 97 UMS is simply incomparable.

I acknowledge that the current phenomenon heavily favours the Jupas route, and that competition has intensified due to accepting “overseas” students.

However, one cannot deny that despite the A-Levels students:
(1) Having studied a far more rigorous syllabus than DSE students for both biology and chemistry (this is agreed upon; the IAL syllabus overlaps MBChB Year 1 curriculum)
(2) Achieved impressive grades, far surpassing the minimum requirement for DSE applicants
They are still denied entry.
——

So take this as a warning if you’re a younger student planning to apply for the MBChB route + studying Med school in Hong Kong. Pick Jupas, not non-Jupas. Unless you want to go overseas.

[Research Questionnaire Invitation: Exploring Psychological Traits and Interpersonal Experiences in the Chinese Context]

Hi everyone! My name is Lee Hoi Ieng (Leona), a Master’s student in Clinical Psychology at the University of Macau. Under the supervision of Professor O Jiaqing, I am currently conducting my thesis research.

This study aims to explore psychological traits and interpersonal experiences within the Chinese cultural context, with a particular focus on the roles of high sensitivity, rejection sensitivity, authenticity, relational need satisfaction, and self-compassion. Whether you tend to be highly observant and sensitive to your surroundings in daily life, or naturally resilient and easygoing, your unique interpersonal style carries irreplaceable academic value for this research. We sincerely invite individuals aged 18 or above with a Chinese cultural background to participate.

The questionnaire is strictly anonymous, and the data will be used solely for academic analysis. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete. Thank you very much for your time and for sharing this!

Accept or Reject

I received an acceptance letter from CUHK based on my predicted grades. Their requirement was AAB for the IAL results, but I actually got ABC.

Do you think I might still be allowed to enroll? My portal currently says “Under Consideration,” and when I called them, they said they would send me an email.

I’m really anxious because if CUHK doesn’t accept me, I’ll have to attend another university, so I really need to know as soon as possible.

Based on seniors’ experiences, what do you think is likely to happen?

Help? IBCP Advice Needed DESPERATELY from College Admissions Team Members.(pleasepleasepleasepleasepleasewithacherryontop)

A little context, I am currently taking the International Baccalaureate Careers Program in an English Schools Foundation school in Hong Kong. (CP is essentially the IBDP but with two less courses and no core but I have to create a reflective project and service within the parameters of my Program.) In my case Music that is provided by Berklee College of Music.

My first question is, if I were to choose to pursue something other than, or on top of music in college, and given that my IB courses (HL Eng Lang & Lit, HL Music, HL Psych, and SL Comp Sci) have a total average grade of at least a 5.5 with the least being a 5, would any school consider my application? Would my application, if considered, be treated any different in priority or otherwise in comparison to a DP student that received a similar grade average?

My second question is, given that my grades/certificate isn't meeting the requirements, or barely misses the requirements, would the admissions officer be bothered to look at my CV, Personal Statement, Portfolio, Achievements, etc? If they do look at it, how much would it matter in comparison to grades?

Thanks in advance for any replies that I receive, I am, and always will be, very grateful toward the community that are willing to give new gens some guidance among their confusion.

Rejected from HKU/CUHK/HKUST as an AP student—trying to understand why

Hi everyone, I’m trying to understand my application results for the three Hong Kong universities and would really appreciate some insight from people familiar with admissions there.

I’m an AP student graduating from an Asian high school, but I do not have a Chinese passport. My academic profile was roughly:

  • SAT: 1550+
  • 7 AP scores of 5
  • Graduating from a well known Asian high school
  • Non-Chinese passport
  • Applied mostly to economics/finance/business-related programs

I applied early round. Despite this, I was rejected from every program I applied to at HKU, CUHK, and HKUST.

I know these programs are competitive, but I’m honestly a little surprised to have received no offers from any of the three, especially given the SAT/AP results. I am pretty sure that these statistics qualify for a scholarship, let alone admission. I’m wondering if there are any factors I’m overlooking.

Retaking A-levels as an International student

I got BCD this May/June. I knew I would get bad grades and retake all of my subjects this October/November 2026, so I’ve been studying throughout the whole summer.

I’m targeting HK universities as well as CUHK Shenzhen. I’m also taking a full A Level Chemistry this May/June. I thought getting 4A*s would at least get me a full-tuition scholarship at HK universities, but I’ve seen people with better stats than me who still didn’t get any scholarship.

I’m super anxious, and I don’t even know if retaking everything is worth it anymore.

I have good extracurriculars, including some national awards. I also got AAB in my AS Levels

Urgent!! (Uni related)

Hi guys, I want advice on something very serious. My sister applied for City UHK (HongKong) as a Pakistani student, and she got selected for 2 undergrad programmes:

1- Aeronautical Engineering

2- Aerospace

She got a conditional offer, and they gave her a 100% scholarship. It was a conditional offer, and she was to secure it if she had Straight As or A*s in A level. She had straight As in AS (GCE) but in A2 she ended up with Bs, rounding up her overall grades to Bs. The reason she couldn't do well in AS was because my father passed away a month before she was going to appear for her CAIEs.

Guys, I want an honest response. I have heard City UHK is pretty serious and strict with their policies and everything. Is there anyways my sister can at least get a financial aid offer? For a year, and then she can apply for the other offers they give out to their undergrad kids?

Or is there any platform or way, she can secure a scholarship? We were paying for her accommodation and airfare and everything, we just needed a tuition-based scholarship. Please help me out. The Pakistani unis she got into are decent (GIKI, NUST) but their aerospace programs aren't the best, and my sister is extremely talented and smart. Had we not faced our personal tragedy she would've never ended up with Bs. I am very proud of her for appearing in the exams and still doing an excellent job. If I could get some advice here, I would really appreciate it :)
