It's amazing how much DeS got right (and wrong!)

So as I posted recently, I'm replaying Demons Souls on PC via emulation for the first time in about 15 years.

Having completed Boletaria 1-1 to 1-3, all of Stonefang, and the Shadow world (the one with the skeletons) 1-1, a few things have really stood out that DeS did well, versus things that were improved in DS1/2/3 and Elden Ring.

In terms of what it did well, I'm surprised that Demon's Souls hit a home run with the tension between progression vs going back to the nexus to level up or upgrade weapons. They had this perfected with their _first_ Souls game, which is very impressive.

Also the atmosphere of the levels is properly oppressive. Everything has real character to it and the vibe of each level is really tangible to the player. I love that each zone feels completely unique in its own oppressive way

However in terms of what it did poorly (or to put it more accurately, what the later games did better)... It feels like DeS wants you to play only one way: slowly and methodically. There are so many walls, narrow passages, tunnels, etc that make it impossible to run passed or dodge behind enemies. Swinging-styls weapons often hit a wall and something like a spear becomes mandatory in so many levels. Whereas later games feel like they gave the player greater choice in how they played the game.

The controls are janky as all heck too. I've died more times to gravity than I have to enemies, and have rarely died to a boss. Gravity, the camera, the confined spaces, and enemy placement are the hardest enemies in DeS lol.

The levels, while having a tonne of character, are often frustrating to play through due to the many tight corridors, tunnels and narrow walkways. Figuring out which way to go in Latria or Stonefang can be a nightmare, and not in a good way.

Truth be told I'm sort of enjoying replaying DeS but am finding it more frustrating than fun most of the time. Later games really improved in every respect, and to be honest Elden Ring in particular has probably ruined DeS/DS1/2/3 for me because ER just knocked it out of the park in every way.

edit: I forgot to mention how much I hate the item encumbrance mechanic! I'm glad FromSoft got rid of it in later titles.

Heya Demon Souls community. Update on my second time around ( first NG+ ).

I made a previous post about how I'm trying to get the platinum trophy, here's what i got so far. So I have every ring besides Eternal Warrior's Ring, Ally's Ring, Foe's Ring, and Sodden Ring. I have pure white tendency on every world except for the first, and maybe(?) neutral tendency on my character (not sure cuz the dimness of the icon is sorta hard to judge). I still need both on online trophies, and I have nothing left to do but take out the final boss before I start my second NG+. Any advice on what I should do before committing to a third playthrough? Anyone able to help with the online trophies? I'm thinking I should push my world tendencies to pure black and defeat the 5 black phantoms of each world to get pure white character tendency to get the ring from the monumental, then the online ones, then go for a third time round?

Replaying DeS on PC... Is it just me or is 1-1 surprisingly difficult?

It's been 15 years since I played DeS and in that time I've gone on to play DS1/2/3 and Elden Ring.

My first thought after beating Phalanx in 1-1 is that DeS introductory level was far less forgiving than the later games. Ambushes throughout the level, constant tight fighting areas with little room to swing a weapon without hitting a wall, and not enough room to run passed enemies.

I had forgotten how difficult the DeS levels were compared to later FromSoft games lol! I definitely got the impression that rushing is punished more severely in DeS than in later FromSoft titles

Playstation 3 with dualsense?

Hi, after many tries I finally clicked with remake, and I would love to play original version, but my PS3 controller barely works. Did someone/can someone try playing on PS3 using dualsense? On some games like MGS 4 and MGR:R it works flawlessly, and on some it doesn’t register inputs whatsoever? I’d be thankful for info before I try to hunt down a PS3 disc.

Why most of the community hate the remake?

First of all I didn’t play the original but I saw gameplay videos and listened to the old bosses soundtracks.

For what I have experienced with the remake, I think they did a pretty good job with the remake, they made one of if not the best graphics in gaming, improved gameplay.

and this may be controversial but I think boss soundtracks are better in the remake, people call it dark souls 3 osts slop, but for me the flamelurker, old king allant, and maiden astrea osts are better and one of the best soundtracks in the series, they even gave penetrator his own ost instead of tower knight ost.

And I see that most of the criticisms were just nostalgia, they changed the cat icon so the remake is trash! Not a valid criticism that they truly messed up.

I really loved the remake and it’s sad to see that they closed bluepoint. Share me yall thoughts about this.

Is there a shortcut to tower Knight?

I can't even make it to the boss, everything just one shots me on the run, this game isn't even fun, it makes ds2 look like nothing. At least you can de-spawn enemies in ds2. Is this game supposed to be this awful or is there something in doing wrong?

Why red enemies?

I just defeated the Adjudicator and I fought the next boss but died. On my way back to his arena I was surprised to find extra enemies that are red. Specifically two golden armour skeletons with huge swords and one skeleton with two uchigatanas.

Lost Ostrava! help

So I wanted the Mausoleum key from Ostrava, but I couldnt find him anywhere. last I saw was on 1-1 where he was fighting the enemies for me and after that I didnt really look for him and beat phalanx and then later beat Tower Knight. after that I got to know that He could be below the bridge where the dragon flames but I didnt find him there too. Now theres nowhere I could search. Not in the Nexus as well. Did I just lock myself?

UPDATE: I think I just killed Ostrava’s Red phantom form inside the castle???!! And i got the rune shield and sword! is it done fr?:(

Can you slow walk in OG DeS?

Hey, I am checking here because I can't find any answers to this and I am not dure if this is an issue regarding the game or my controller. I find myself being unable to slow walk, essentially my character will always move at max speed at any direction I input. Walking also seems to have locked directions like rolling would. Just want to clarify for myself if this is actually how the game is or if it's just my Ps3 controller being of bad quality. It seems to only be this way with Demon Souls as far as I can tell.

Not sure I enjoy this game but somehow can't stop playing

I've played Demon's Souls for 15h or so and still don't really know if I really enjoy the game or not. I've played through Bloodborne and all 3 Dark Souls, so I thought this would be right up my alley but after the first few levels and a lot of dying I took a longer break.

Yesterday, I gave it another try, mainly because I didn't know what else to play and got sucked back in. I played through Prison of Hope and most of Upper Latria and it felt great to make some progress but damn why is this game so dark and horrible? That swamp area in 3-2 really gave me the creeps.

The game is hard and the world is so bleak and disgusting and yet I can't stop playing and am already itching to continue later tonight. Do you guys feel the same way?

I don't quite understand it, as the game is not relaxing and I'm really tense when I play. I guess it must be that feeling of persevering through this and the sense of accomplishment when you make progress?

Also should I pay attention to world tendency? I mostly ignored it for now. Once or twice I killed myself in the nexus after a boss as I saw it recommended but it feel it's a little cheesy and I would rather not do it. I played through Upper Latria in human form and didn't die once. It was actually quite nice to have a bigger health bar and not glow like a firefly for a change. That said, I don't want to make the game too hard for myself in the long run. I'm glad I got through most of 3-2 in one go so I don't have to do it all again.
