Underground Death Metal gems: From hyper-speed violence to cavernous Death/Doom

Hi everyone,

Continuing my series of Death Metal recommendations. On this one, I’m covering a wide spectrum of subgenres and eras—from cavernous Death/Doom supergroups and hyper-speed South American violence to obscure crossover gems and blackened dissonance.

Here are 10 killer records that deserve way more eyes and ears. Check these out:

GoetiaMortuary Cult (USA, 2026) An absolute beast of a record that’s been taking the underground by storm. It delivers pure, hyper-fast OSDM packed with dark energy and crushing grooves. What really sets this album apart is the lead work—the guitar solos are insanely well-crafted, blistering, and packed with sheer power. It's frantic, filthy, and relentlessly heavy from start to finish. Personal favorites: "Lanterns of the Dead", "Corpse Candle", "Bestial Tomb".

DismaTowards the Megalith (USA, 2011) A pure supergroup masterclass and an absolute titan of cavernous Death/Doom metal. Featuring death metal royalty with members from Incantation and Funebrarum, this album is an indispensable monument of heavy music. It delivers monolithic, crushing riffs, suffocating atmosphere, and pulverizing weight from start to finish. Personal favorites: "Chaos Apparition", "Chasm of Oceanus", "Towards the Megalith".

DishumaneCenturion's Demise (USA, 2024) A monstrous debut EP from this Nevada trio featuring members linked to Incantation and Ascended Dead (with Charlie Koryn behind the kit). They bridge the gap between 90s USDM riff-craft and early 2000s brutal death metal, packing Deicide-style vocal cadences, Glen Benton grit, and heavy Incantation atmospheres into three razor-sharp tracks. Extremely dense, authentic, and viciously structured. Personal favorite: top to bottom it's great!

SkinningHomicidal Experimentations (Portugal, 2020) Extremely aggressive and fast-paced Portuguese Death Metal that strikes a perfect balance between controlled chaos and crushing efficiency. They seamlessly switch from full-throttle, chaotic assaults to insanely catchy, groovy riffs that hit right in the gut. Pure savage energy with top-tier execution. Personal favorites: "Homicidal Experimentations", "The Gravedigger", "Sadistic Butcher", "In the Hands of God".

RebaelliunBurn the Promised Land (Brazil, 1999) An criminally underrated masterpiece of Brazilian hyper-speed Death Metal that deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as Krisiun, Sepultura, or Sarcófago. This debut is a relentless, lightning-fast war machine packing unmatchable velocity, maniacal guitar solos, and a crystal-clear, razor-sharp production. Driven by non-stop blast beats, bludgeoning palm-muting, and devastatingly warm guttural growls, it delivers pure, unadulterated sonic violence from start to finish. Personal favorites: "At War", "..and the Immortals Shall Rise", "The Legacy of Eternal Wrath", "Triumph of the Unholy Ones".

SacrilegionFrom Which Nightmares Crawl (USA, 2022) An epic debut record and an absolute hidden gem of modern death metal. They deliver an evil, clinical hybrid of choppy, semi-technical USDM (think Morbid Angel and Vader) laced with diabolical, dark melodic death/thrash licks. The riffing is the absolute star of the show ranging from fast tremolo-picked madness to dissonant chord banks and headbanging grooves. Powerful, practiced, and perfectly balanced between sheer intensity and restraint. If they keep building on this trajectory, we’re looking at a future giant of the genre. Personal favorites: "A Terrible Pilgrimage to Seek the Nighted Throne", "Legacy of the Impaler", "The Hollow Blue Eyes of Yomi at Twilight".

ExInferisDefunctus in Heresi *(Luxembourg, 2004)*An obscure, hidden crossover gem from Luxembourg that sits right at the intersection of high-speed Death Metal and early 2000s Metalcore. Driven by insanely effective, razor-sharp riffing and an infectious groove on the drums, it pairs deep gutturals with aggressive, desperate screamed vocals. Top it off with an authentic, unpolished old-school production, and you get a uniquely vicious underground release. Personal favorites: "Bloodsoaked Apostasy", "Adonai".

Rotting ObsceneDepths of Decay (USA, 2016) A devastatingly dynamic blend of brutal and technical Death Metal from Virginia (featuring a former touring member of Arsis). This album completely skips the modern gimmicks to deliver blistering, highly complex fretwork, fiery solos, and a dual-vocal assault that trades off deep, barbaric gutturals with vicious high screams. They seamlessly balance chaotic, swirling technical riffs with bone-crushing, open-ended grooves that pummel you from start to finish. Personal favorites: "Audient Void", "Depths of Decay", "Temporal Diminishment".

HarCursed Creation (Israel, 2024) A pure, unadulterated assault of dissonant Black/Death Metal from this Israeli trio. This album is a whirlwind of barbaric blast beats, chaotic dive-bomb solos, and suffocating, slimy atmospheres reminiscent of Angelcorpse, Diocletian, or Deathspell Omega. It's fast, vicious, and relentlessly focused on total sonic violence and devastation. Personal favorites: "Invoking Evil Spirit", "Shachat - Seven Halls of Defilement", "Metaphysical".

CardaemortThe Whispering House (Italy, 2024) A brilliant of a debut from this Italian duo. They deliver a masterclass in progressive Death Metal, striking the perfect balance between punishing, heavy riffs and hauntingly beautiful melodies. The seamless transition between guttural growls and soaring clean vocals creates an incredible emotional depth. Unique, ambitious, and completely captivating an absolute must-listen for anyone who loves forward-thinking metal. Personal favorite: "The Bridge Of Souls".

What are your thoughts on these? Have you spun any of these records yet, or do you have other underground cuts to recommend? Let's discuss in the comments!

Some nice demos

Malfeitor 1987 demo

Morbid Angel thy kingdom come 1987 Demo

Abhorrence (Brazil) Ascension 1997 Demo

Necrocide vomit forth blood 1995 demo

Accidentaly posted this shit to Metal for the masses which ofcourse is a waste of time spot for this.

Here are some nice Demos. Morbid angel being a classic ofcourse. Malfeitor is also very nice, very Kreator pleasure to kill type of Thrash / Death thrash. Abhorrence is Krisiun worship but also very good I'd even say that some of their later songs are better than Krisiun(I really like their single "Shatterer merciless"). Necrocide, brutal Dm in the vein of Devourment (the drummer of Necrocide would later go and co found Devourment).

If any of you know some good Demos, gimme.

BAND SPOTLIGHT: Benighted (France) – Presenting Their New Album! 🇫🇷

Hey everyone! Time for our next lineup deep-dive, and this one's a big one — closing out Saturday, October 10th, on The Inferno stage: the merchants of madness themselves, BENIGHTED!

These French deathgrind veterans have been terrorizing stages since 1998, and they show zero signs of slowing down. Off the back of their tenth album Ekbom (2024) — named after the real-life delusional parasitosis syndrome, because of course it is — the band has kept the chaos rolling with a lineup shake-up and a brand new single, "The Spineless Freak," which also marks the live debut of new drummer Matthias Biechler behind the kit.

The Quick Breakdown:

  • Day: Saturday, October 10th, 2026
  • Origin: France 🇫🇷
  • Genre: Brutal Death Metal / Deathgrind
  • For Fans Of: Aborted, Cattle Decapitation, Ingested
  • Lineup: Julien Truchan (vocals), Emmanuel Dalle (guitars), Pierre Arnoux (bass), Matthias Biechler (drums)

Why you cannot miss this set: Benighted don't just play brutal death metal — they weaponize it with theatrical, almost cinematic horror storytelling, blending pig-squeal vocals, blast-beat carnage, and a genuinely unsettling sense of humor that's kept them at the top of the French extreme metal scene for over two decades. With a new drummer bringing fresh violence to the kit and a new single already tearing through the underground, this Saturday closer is shaping up to be one of the most unhinged sets of the whole festival.

💬 Have you caught Benighted live before? What's your pick from Ekbom, or are you more of an Icon-era purist? Drop your thoughts below!

Nine Heavy Metal Albums You Might Not Have Heard (But should hear ASAP)

Elan vital - Elan vital

An early Fates Warning/Adramelch soundalike from South Korea of all places. Combines a beautiful melodic flowy twin guitar approach with some of the most otherworldly and captivating female vocals I’ve ever heard, a modern hidden gem.

Enchanter - Defenders of the Realm

More Fates Warning inspired stuff - this time fused with the more muscular side of USPM like Manowar, one of the best obscurities from the 80s US underground.

Heathen Hoof - The Occult Sessions

This Finnish band plays a very stripped down, no-frills approach to heavy metal on this EP. 4 perfectly executed songs reminiscent of the darker NWOBHM acts like Satan, Holocaust, and Cloven Hoof.

Inquisicion - Black Leather from Hell

Not to be confused with the black metal band bearing a similar name and logo, this Chilean band plays a very free-wheeling style reminiscent of Mercyful Fate - highly dark yet highly melodic.

Onward - Evermoving

Landing firmly on the power metal side of US power metal, this album has the massive choruses, soaring vocals, and shredding acrobatic solos one expects from power metal, but doesn’t forget the fantastic riffing like many European bands.

Prodigy - As Darkness Reigns

Extremely progressive approach to USPM that combines thrashy riffs with extended neoclassical solos.

Proud - Fire Breaks the Dawn

Very melodic, passionate, and sensitive Swedish heavy metal with some absolutely gorgeous twin guitar harmonies.

Skullview - Legends of Valour

By far the heaviest album here. If you ever wanted to hear US power metal with Bolt Thrower riffs, you’re in luck.

Slauter Xstroyes - Winter Kill

One of the earliest examples of progressive metal, and also one of the weirdest. Few heavy metal albums get this off-kilter while still retaining everything that makes the genre so great.

Let's talk about the lineup!

I personally love Death metal, in all its forms, so I believe this lineup is insane for a small festival. Galvanizer are class and one of the revelations on this new era of old school death metal. Benighted has an impressive career and the evolution is mind-blowing! And Dead Congregation is an unbelievable live performance**.** What's the highlight of the lineup for you?

Verdunkeln - Blutrunst

Another totally underrated German black metal act.

Verdunkeln with the song "Blutrunst" from their 2005 demo.

One of those bands where you almost don't want to know anything about the artist behind it, just so you don't risk losing interest in the band itself.

Bestiarius (Peru) - Bestiarius (EP 2022) (Death Metal FFO: Blasphemy, Baphomet, Possessed)

Bestiarius, is a self-produced band from Lima, Peru. They play very fast, relentless death metal with a sinister atmosphere very close to Blasphemy, but they can also slow down the tempo for more melodic parts. This EP is a good first effort, I hope they continue their work. It is available on most streaming platforms if you want to check it out.
