This error occurs in newer releases of DokuWiki (such as the "Mort" release) because the core parser expects the syntax configuration setting to be defined. If this setting is missing in your configuration files or lost during an update, PHP receives a null value and throws a TypeError.

To fix this, modify dokuwiki/conf/local.php to add the following line at the end.

$conf['syntax'] = 'dw';
