Thank you to the person who anonymously paid for my restaurant meal a couple days ago in Dubuque!

I was the recipient of a random act of kindness when I was in Dubuque a couple days ago and wanted to publicly acknowledge it. When you give, it's always best to give anonymously. That's how this person did it, but I want to tell the story to others

I moved to Iowa (to retire) a couple weeks ago from the east coast. I've been to Dubuque a few times many years ago, and had driven up from Des Moines to look at possible houses to buy.

Not sure I'll wind up buying in Dubuque but it looks like a cool place to try and if I find the right house I might buy here. If anyone knows of a house for sale in DBQ that doesn't have a sidewalk to shovel in the winter (hard to find) I'm all ears.

Well, a customer in a restaurant I went to in Dubuque must have known I was an out of towner because I was ordering like a tourist who didn't know the local terminology. I had no idea what a "basket" was, lol.

Besides saying hello to this person when I walked in, I had no other interaction as I'm an introvert and not the type to strike up conversations with strangers.

The meal was excellent and after I finished and asked for the check, I was told it was paid for. By who? The person who was sitting near me when I first came in and who had already left the restaurant.

This person did something generous and nice for a complete stranger and did it anonymously. I'm not poor and didn't need a free meal, but I do appreciate it.

Completely made my day and was another nice story to tell friends and family back home about how things are going in my move to Iowa.

I feel like I'm home now. Thanks again!

favorite local spots in dubuque

i've lived in dubuque for a few years now, and i've discovered some really great places that i think deserve more attention. whether it's the unique restaurants, cozy coffee shops, or beautiful parks, there's something special about each of them. for food, i can't get enough of the local tacos at taco john's near the river. if you're into coffee, you have to check out the grounds coffee shop on main street. it has such a nice vibe and the baristas are super friendly. also, the view from eagle point park is just breathtaking, especially around sunset. what are some of your favorite local spots that you think everyone should check out?

MCGRATH IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST

PSA. I'm a lender for a local financial and I'm here to say, never, ever, ever do business with the crooks that are mcgrath. I have seen time and time again, where members reach out to refinance, and they are way upside down bc mcgrath sneaks in extra costs (after repeatedly being told NO.) Our institution ended our partnership with them bc they continuously cause all kinds of problems for their customers and our members. It takes a special kind of evil to take advantage of others to the extent the crooks at mcgrath do. Their whole business model is shady and all about taking advantage of people.

Best Internet/cable TV provider in the Dubuque/Asbury area

Hi everyone. I just had an offer accepted for a house in the Radford Road area, so it’s right between Dubuque and Asbury. I need to set up cable TV and Internet providers and was wondering if anyone could make recommendations for what works well in this area. Super grateful for any advice.

Turkey and Dressing Sandwiches Recipe

Hello,

I've been trying to locate a recipe for Dubuque Turkey and Dressing Sandwiches, and was floored to find that it doesn't really seem to exist on the internet. I found one that looks like it could be close, but the proportions seemed off, and some that have things I know don't go in a traditional Dubuque one, like onion soup mix.

So I asked a lovely 90-year-old lady if she might still have an old church cookbook or something that would have such a recipe. She found an old handwritten recipe card for 100 Turkey and Dressing Sandwiches. The recipe is attributed to Betty Thomas, and says that it was printed in the KDTH March 1977 Newsletter.

I thought I'd share it here just to help keep it alive. Cremer's is definitely delicious, but I really want to be able to make these myself. Do you have an old turkey and dressing sandwich recipe you'd like to make sure isn't lost to time? Share it here if you like.

Turkey and Dressing Sandwiches for 100 from Betty Thomas

18-25lb turkey

100 slices of bread

20 cups diced celery

3 cups diced onions (a later note says "yellow, not sweet")

3 Tbsp salt

1 1/2 Tbsp pepper

1 Tbsp sage

More seasoning can be added to taste

Boil turkey covered with water until meat falls from bone. Reserve broth. Cut turkey into bite sized pieces. Put in roaster.

Add 100 slices of bread, broken up.

Add everything else.

Pour broth over mix until soggy. Bake with lid on for 1.5 hours at 325. Uncover and bake 15 minutes.

While it doesn't say to do this, I'd make sure to mix everything up well before starting the bake. But that's just something about these old recipes. They don't always list all the steps.

Anyway, if you give this a try, let me know if it tasted like you remember or if you had to doctor it up a bit? Enjoy!

Hey Yall I'm a full time (not famous) comedian coming to The Goose in DBQ this Tuesday at 8 on a 17 day tour for just $5. I'm fully DIY by choice and have spent the last 13 years zig zagging the country headlining shows in 37 states (and Canada!). Come have fun and AMA.

Here's my bio, sorry it's in the third person: Dan Alten is a charming goofball from Kentucky who has been traveling the country for the past decade doing about 200 shows a year bringing his intelligently surreal bebop nonsense everywhere from theaters to punk basements to art galleries to beloved comedy clubs with a knack for making audiences feel like they're on a good psychedelic trip without the drugs. Like if the Ramones were one guy with a mustache and good jokes. Iggy Pop with puns. Clever chaos. Like Jimi Hendrix lighting fire to a Tik Tok reel live on stage. He has opened for Kyle Kinane, Bobcat, Sam Tallent, Rory Scovel, Sarah Sherman from SNL, Johnny Pemberton, Hari Kondabolu, rapper Open Mike Eagle, DJ Doug Pound & David Leibe Hart from Tim & Eric, various punk bands with silly names, and a guy at an open mic who tried to throw his father’s ashes into the crowd. He has recorded 2 albums, written a zine, and filmed a pilot for an Amazon Prime stand up show that was lost to history. But most importantly he’s very funny and unique. You will enjoy him. And if not you can mud wrestle him after the show.

Looking for a few people in Dubuque area to help start a NORML chapter

Hey, I’m trying to get a local chapter going in the Dubuque area for NORML.

Right now I just need like 3 solid people to help get the ball rolling so we can actually submit an application for a chapter.

Nothing formal or intense at this stage—just trying to put together a small founding group.

What I’m looking for:

  • 1–3 people who are actually consistent (not just interested in theory)
  • Some help splitting basic roles like coordination / notes / outreach
  • People in or near Dubuque

What it’s about:

Basically just cannabis policy reform + education + local organizing. Keeping it legal and structured.

No experience needed. Honestly this is early-stage so it’s more about showing up and helping build something than having any special background.

If you’re interested, just comment or message me and I’ll explain what I’m putting together.

2015 Ford Escape SE

Had to have my rear camera replaced. The view is way lower than the old one. It's so low I can read my license plate. The red park assist lines are on the bumper. I brought this up to the tech that did the job. He tried had lighting me and telling me it was normal. Is there a fox for this?

Gym Recommendation

Hey all!

I'm a complete newbie to the gym game, but want to get started on my fitness journey! I'm looking for your experiences with local gyms to find the right fit for me!

I live close to Volv, and have considered that (though I know it's one of the more pricey options). Also familiar with Planet Fitness, but nothing else outside of that.

I'd also appreciate somewhere that allows me to track time spent at the gym or days I've gone. My job reimburses $80 every 3 months for gym memberships if proof of attendance is provided! (A clock-in type system would be ideal).

What gyms are out there? Which ones have the best facilities? What's the culture like?

All help is appreciated!
