Where to buy niche bike parts YEG?

Where to buy niche bike parts YEG?

I'm looking for a 68 x 103 bottom bracket but no place seems to carry them in Edmonton based off their websites. Is there a Canadian retailer likely selling them? A hidden gem bike store here? Do I trust the $20 amazon bottom brackets?

Route Advice Request slash Rant

Hello YEG Cyclers,

I recently got back on my bike for my commute after driving for a few years (shameful, I know).

Anyway, looking for advice for anyone that rides regularly through the southeast industrial area in the area shown in the photo. I live in Bonnie Doon and my workplace is near the Soccer Centre. Route 1 is the route I took to work this morning. Route 2 is one that I think could also be an option.

Up to Argyll is great - quiet residential streets or through the beautiful Mill Creek Ravine.

Once you hit Argyll is where things get less-than-ideal.

Because of the CP train tracks, there are very limited options.

- 75 Street is a no-go because there are no bike lanes and traffic is fast. There isn't even a sidewalk.

- 86 Street (Route 1), the City's bike map claims there is a shared pathway on the west side of the road, but I don't know where it is lol. Maybe a slightly wider sidewalk? I ended up biking on the sidewalk on the east side of the road until Wagner Rd, along which there is a nice new shared pathway.

- 91 Street (Route 2), there is an actual shared path which is nice, but it is further out of my way and requires more time on the industrial area roads which I am not a huge fan of.

From my perspective, there is a missing link along the alignment of the LRT tracks that the City should address, which I've shown with the red arrow. They even constructed a path from Wagner Rd to the CP tracks which just dead-ends. I recall seeing somewhere that the City had identified this as a missing link, but I don't see it in any of the upcoming bike lane plans. The fact that they recently built the bike route along Wagner Rd to 86 Street suggests to me that they aren't planning to address it at all. Anyway, appreciate any suggestions and keen to hear if anyone else has opinions on biking through this area.

Recreational bike fitter

Hi! I would like to get my bike fitted because I have chronic nerve pain in my butt. I am just starting out cycling again after being told in 2019 that I would not ride again.

I need a new seat and for my second hand, very basic bike to get fitted.

I don’t mind investing in a good saddle because I can move it to a future bike but I am not looking for a 4 hr bike fitting because I can barely bike 30 minutes.

Thanks!!

Ghost Bike Installation Ride

There’s a ride on Thursday, July 9 @ 12pm from Bike Edmonton (10612 105 St NW) to 34 St & 28A Ave to install and memorialize Alfred Reisdorf who was killed in a car accident crossing the road on his bike.

If anyone would like to join the ride, the family would appreciate your support.

Annoying parking job by cherry picker

This morning by the bike trail entrance right before Dawson park going NE. Couldn’t have parked a little further on either side, really had to block the full trailhead on a widely used trail.

Cycling Routes

I train on a road bike and I'm having trouble finding decently long routes in Edmonton. My minimum distance is about 20k but its really hard to find anything that doesn't put me on to a freeway or super busy road.

Any suggestions?

For reference, I can't bike on the sidewalk because:

A. I am going way too fast if I hit anyone we would both be seriously injured.

B. A lot of the sidewalks are set up very poorly and when I do ride on them I end up stopping every 2 minutes for a crosswalk.

I'm looking to get the longest route possible with a minimal number of stops. I'm aware Edmonton is not a great city for this so I'm also open to suggestions for going out of town for some longer days possibly even a 100k loop for my Saturday blocks

What would make you bike year-round in Edmonton?

I’m looking into a project that could make year-round cycling easier, but before I build anything I want to understand what cyclists actually struggle with.
If you regularly commute by bike (especially in winter), I’d love to hear about your experience.

A few questions:

What’s your commute like?
Where do you usually leave your bike during the day?
Have you ever had a bike stolen or damaged?
What’s your biggest frustration with winter riding?
If you own an e-bike, does security change where or how often you ride?
Is there anything that would make you choose biking over driving more often?

I’m not trying to sell anything—I honestly want to understand the problems people face before deciding whether this idea is worth pursuing.
Even a couple of sentences would really help. Thanks!

Trek DS 1 Gen 5

TLDR: bought a trek ds1 gen 5, not sure if it was right. feeling slight buyers remorse maybe

hello everyone!

i bought a trek dual sport 1 gen 5 from Cranky’s last week and am feeling a bit of buyers remorse and regret that I made a bad choice. I took it for 2 short rides and I don’t know it doesn’t “feel” right sometimes? it was $725. could i have gotten something better for the price? I want this to be my 1 and done bike. I bike on gravel & the road/pavement/sidewalk, I don’t do any hardcore mountain biking but do plan on taking my bike to trips to places like Banff and on other Alberta biking trails. I’m concerned now that the rigid fork is going to be an issue in terms of rougher gravel roads.

after my 2 rides, sometimes I feel the bike is a bit heavy, is that normal or is the ds1 unnecessarily heavy? I tried the fx3 + liv rove 2 and although I LOVED how lightweight it was, I decided it was ultimately too expensive and the tires it comes with are too thin for gravel/off road (I didn’t want to spend further $$ when the bike is already $1.2k) Now I’ve hit a wall because I went cheap and I feel like I should have just spent the extra funds for something that makes me happier.

I know this whole post is going to annoy some people so i apologize for my ignorance on the topic and my indecisiveness. I wasn’t sure what I was looking for to be honest, and just went with whatever was sold to me. I also strangely feel that the bars are kinda low? The bike was fitted for my dimensions so I don’t know if I simply am not used to the bike.

what do yall think? has anyone bought a ds1 and actually loved it or is the extra $$ on a DS2 or other model better suited for me?

Shortest bike lane?

Is there a competition for shortest/most useless bike lane?

If so, I'd like to submit this beauty. 32 meters start to end.

Wadhurst road.
