Deciding what to import from google

I'm trying to break off from my 20 year old Gmail address that is largely just too many promos, newsletters, and spam. I'm making the switch to Fastmail since it seems right up my alley and I already use 1password, so I can integrate the email masking into that.

I started up the transfer and it immediately asked me if I want to import over a hundred thousand emails, and I honestly couldn't decide. There's definitely important stuff in there but there is also a ton of spam. I'm not planning to completely shutter my Google account, but I want to be much less reliant on it.

Similarly, it asked me if I wanted to have Fastmail start receiving email sent to that email address. That sounds nice if an old friend reaches out but that will just leave me where I currently am, getting tons of spam.

I also know my contacts have tons of dupes and people I haven't talked to in over a decade.

So I guess my questions are,

  1. if you moved over from a very old Google email, did you bring *everything* over with you? Did you import all your emails?

  2. is it worth having Fastmail pick up emails from my old address and trying to whittle down the spam from there?

  3. any general advice if you've done something similar?

Thanks all!

What a shame that Fastmail hosts our emails in the US

Unfortunately, we’ll have to leave, my European friends.

Earlier this week, the US Supreme Court upheld Donald Trump’s decision, taken in March 2025, to remove Rebecca Slaughter as head of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), a US agency previously regarded as independent.

The US President had told her that her continued tenure in the post would be ‘incompatible with the administration’s priorities’. For some critics of the Data Privacy Framework (DPF) agreement signed between Europe and the US, this decision calls the agreement into question.

In other words, the use of US cloud services to store personal data is now being called into question.

It is only a matter of time before European law adapts to the indescribable chaos generated by the Trump administration.

And I’m sorry, but our data, however insignificant it may be, deserves better than to be left lying around in the cloud of this insecure country.

Fastmail, I used to love you so much…

Understanding email encryption

Encrypted email sounds good, but what does it really mean? Email can be encrypted in many different ways, at different times, for different purposes.

Home Depot won't register 'myname'@fastmail.com - has anyone?

Title describes... I've discovered that Home Depot doesn't recognize the fastmail.com domain when registering a new account or when trying to change an existing account email addy to fastmail. Has anyone successfully done this?

FM's Tier 2 support says they have heard this and have tried to negotiate with HD but have been unsuccessful reaching the proper HD organization to do so. They recommend establishing an alias using one of Fastmail's alternate domains, believing they are mostly accepted. Has anyone here run into this or solved it using a fastmail.com address?

No unified inbox?

Come on - this is standard with just about every email app. Then again, the "app" is just a wrapper around the webmail interface.... so they should at least fix it there, or give us a bona-fide email application.

Recent influx of spam

Is anyone else getting a large amount of spam to their fastmail.com domain over the past month? Im getting 5-7 spam email per day. I’m relatively new to fastmail, subscribed about 3 month ago. I only use masked emails and my 2 personal domains for email communication, so I find it strange that I‘m getting spam sent to my main Fastmail.com email account. All the senders are from RandomWord.xyz Or something similar.

Update to a previous post

(My previous post link that of course got downvoted heaps because no one can ever let any constructive criticism be presented about anyone: https://www.reddit.com/r/fastmail/s/EXTXkaoDgO )

So I've had my support ticket with them that is *still* active and they have gotten to the point that its taking 6 days to reply to anything. How is this even acceptable?

Widgets? iOS

It doesn't look like widgets are in the plans for Fastmail. Is there a workaround or an app so that we could have widgets on an iphone and ipad? Especially for the calendar?
