FYI: Already Voted Absentee? You Can Still Change Your Vote.

From the Grand Rapids City Clerk Absentee Voters webpage:

I already voted and returned my absentee ballot, but I may have made an error or changed my mind about how I voted. Can I change my vote?

You may request and vote a replacement ballot. To do this, you need to submit your request in writing with a signature to the City Clerk’s Office by 5 p.m. the Friday before the election (July 31st). Email your request to elections@grcity.us or fax it to 616.456.4607.

The Clerk’s Office is on the second floor of City Hall, 300 Monroe Ave. NW. It’s open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Validated parking is available in the Government Center Ramp off Monroe and Ottawa avenues. The Clerk's office is open the Saturday before the election from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The City Clerk will void your original ballot and issue you a new ballot. All absentee ballots must be received by 8 p.m. on Election Day.

Yeah it’s a weird time to try to be happy about the 250th…

But I’ve seen several things today that still make for nice examples of the community spirit and ideals we can still choose to notice and embrace. Here’s hoping everyone is having a nice holiday in whatever way you are or are not engaging, and at least while we still have the freedom to do so, here’s to being honest about it all and the continued aspiration for that “more perfect union.”

Do you like books and/or talking to people about books?!

Hello! I would like to start a book club! Specific details are unknown, but I want people around the Rockford area, mostly teens and older, to read books with! We could meet by the dam and have lots of fun discussing books! I'd like to mostly read classics, like I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, 1984, Animal Farm, Lord Of The Flies, The Odyssey, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Great Gatsby, books like that! Also, to put it as bluntly as possible, I don't congregate with tr*mp supporters or any of the like. So I'm sorry, but if you are one of those, I suggest finding a different book club, you won't like the books we read here. Also, not limited to books, we could discuss shows or video games or whatever, if you'd like. Anyways, thank you.

Aaron Schaut (1976—2026) R.I.P.

Michele Schaut (Michele's Rescue) unexpectedly lost her husband Aaron Schaut (Dynaflo, The Dynettes) Thursday

(Aaron was one hell of a guy, an all around musical titan, awesome writer (author), a beloved husband and family member of The Pyramid Scheme's owners. Aaron will be deeply missed not only here by the community of Grand Rapids, Michigan, but the literary & music world at large). https://aaronschaut.com/

Is there a smaller fireworks display around the area, or a secret less crowded spot that someone could PM me about where I can take my handicapped child to watch the fireworks?

Any help would be appreciated.

How early to arrive for downtown fireworks?

We want to head downtown for the big fireworks tomorrow but we don’t know how early to go. We can park at my work but would like to get a grassy spot by the ford museum. Anyone been there and know how early to arrive?

SOLIDARITY ACROSS PRISON WALLS DURING THIS HEAT WAVE!

From Michigan Abolition and Prisoner Solidarity:

Michigan has 50,000 people locked up in state prison (33,000), local jails (11,000), federal prison (4,200) and smaller facilities. The vast majority will endure the heat and humidity this week with no A/C, minimal access to fans, and wholly inadequate medical care.

Please call MDOC, your nearest prison, and/or your local jail and demand the following. (Remember, you don't have to give your name or location if you don't want to. Dialing *67 first may hide your number from caller ID.)

MDOC's Director Heidi Washington: 517-241-7238

Sample Script:

“Hello, I'm a concerned resident of ____ county. What are you doing for people locked up during this dangerous heat wave?

[wait for response]

Are you arranging access to additional water, fans, and ice? Heat waves are deadly for the elderly, people taking psychotropic or hypertension meds, people with asthma, and disabled people. I demand that you take immediate action to protect the people in your custody until the heat advisory is lifted, including by releasing elderly, ill, and disabled people to their families if you can't keep them safe. Anything less is cruel and unusual punishment."

After you call your local jail, please report back what they told you by DMing us or email maps@riseup.net"

GR, if you oppose Flock Safety, you're a terrorist!

What does Grand Rapids think?

The CEO of flock safety says DeFlock is a terroristic organization.

Remember when I said: "warrantless surveillance of criminals is fine until they decide YOU'RE the criminal?" Next step, engaged.

FedEx Package dropped at USPS

I accidentally dropped a FedEx-labeled package at my local USPS last Thursday. When I realized my mistake I went to the post office and they said it had probably already been sent to the distribution center by the airport, but that FedEx typically picks up misplaced packages from there. Does anyone know how when/how often those pickups happen? Today would be one week since the error. I have tried finding phone numbers for the FedEx location there with no success (and the general FedEx help line is unsurprisingly unhelpful).

Moderation Tool Update

Hey everyone! Glad to see everything is running relatively smoothly. We've had some concerns regarding some ban evasions and I would like to be as transparent as possible about our actions as moderators in this sub.

With that said, I'd like to introduce u/evasion-guard! It's a bot to help us catch ban evading users.

Now, I understand that bots aren't perfect. If you get banned unfairly and you genuinely aren't avoiding a ban, please reach out with an appeal and mention that you were banned by the bot. We will look into your case and decide whether or not the ban was made accurately. If we find the ban was unjust, we will reinstate your membership to this subreddit.

Cheers!
