Parking?

Hi everyone! I recently bought a paddle board and have been so excited to get out on the water. I’m new-ish to the area but my boyfriend is a long time local.

We checked out both Scott’s Flat and Rollins and were shocked at the price of the day use parking. $22 seems almost ridiculous, especially for a Monday at 2 pm. I am more than happy to pay for parking and help support the maintenance and environment, but this seems steep.

I guess my question is- am I missing something? Are there any discounts for locals vs tourists? Are there people who go every day after work and pay over $100 a week just to park?

Also open to recommendations for any lowkey, low traffic places with maybe a bit cheaper parking.

Moving to area - best wifi to get? My address says no xfinity

Curious experiences with WiFi providers, moving in a week or so. Does anyone use starlink? Or what else works well? Really appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

Looking to open dog kennel in or near GV...

Hey everybody, hoping to get some tips or ideas from you:

Many years ago, when my brother and I were just kids living in GV, we had a dream to open a dog kennel one day.

It took literally over 20 years but it finally came true and we opened our own kennel (but in Tennessee, where I live today (in another "GV" ironically lol)

We've been fairly successful and we want to open a 2nd branch but this time, back where it all started in Grass Valley (or nearby)

My brother lives in Sac but he wants to move back up the hill. I'm looking at moving back myself, as GV has held a special place in my heart since I was about 12 years old.

We are hoping to find an existing structure that's already equipped for boarding/daycare but I know that's gonna be rare.

Does anybody know of any kennel businesses that are planning on closing (or the owner retiring) ?

Anyone work for a kennel or know someone that owns an already existing building? Something that can be converted?

Any other ideas we may not have thought of yet? Any experience in doing something like this in the general area?

We are also entertaining the idea of buying property and building but we know zoning for animal-related businesses can be difficult...

We are open to Alta Sierra, Nevada City, Auburn and Colfax as well but we'd prefer not to do it in Sac.

Anyway, just thought this might be a good place to start!

GV or Auburn

Hello everyone,

I will be starting a new job in GV next week and recently moved to Auburn since it was located right in between my roommate and I’s jobs. Well it turns out my living arrangement isn’t going to workout with said roommate so I’m in a bit of a pickle trying to decide where to live.

So far I have absolutely loved Auburn. Access to the ASR, the downtown area while still having access to usual amenities, the people have been extremely nice, crime has felt nonexistent, literally nothing negative to say. My commute would be 24 miles if I stay in Auburn.

I’ve only visited GV once, and I thought it was a very cute town, the downtown area seemed smaller, but I enjoyed walking around. Looking online it seems like the grocery store situation is more or less the same, I imagine the outdoor recreation is plentiful as well, just haven’t had the chance to look yet. My commute would be at most a couple miles.

I guess I’m coming here with three questions. First, how is the fire risk compared to Auburn? Second, how is the homeless population/crime compared to Auburn? When I visited I didn’t notice anything crazy, but then again I was only in town a few hours. Lastly, if finances weren’t an issue where would you choose to live (rent is the same for the two units I’m considering)

HSMF Renegade Storytelling **LOCATION TIME AND DATE UPDATE***

“Come, come, whoever you are. Wanderer, worshipper, lover of leaving. It doesn’t matter. Ours is not a caravan of despair.” — Rumi
Hey HSMF family! Hope you are as excited as I am for the start of the best music festival in America…
We are going to gather for renegade storytelling tomorrow, Friday, July 3 at 11 PM at the Foundation Station picnic tables. Hope you all can join. It should be fun. The details and the TLDR are below for those of you who want more information!

“Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me” — Woody Guthrie

HSMF Renegade Storytelling Update! (Pre-Late Night) 🪵✨
A few quick, final notes about our gathering as we head into the weekend:
No Money, No Hustle: There is absolutely no money being asked for here. No passing the hat, no requests for donations, no contributions, and no pitches to sign up for a Patreon. As the Dalai Lama famously said: "There shall be no money exchanged..." (But on your deathbed, you will receive total enlightenment, so you've got that going for you, which is nice).
No Agendas: There will be no requests to join a political party, support a foundation, register for a cause, or otherwise commit yourself to anything. This storytelling is being done simply for the pure, unadulterated joy of it.
A Story, Not a Debate: This is a late-night tale, not a town hall. If it’s not your cup of tea, that is more than fine—you are entirely welcome to just keep on drifting down the path. This isn't a space for our philosophies to contend with each other; it’s just a corner of the woods to tell some stories, share some laughs, and pass the time.

“That’s the way it is with the good ones. You are sure you have heard them before.” — Bad Blake

🔎 ORIGINAL DETAILS (In case you missed the first post!)
Hey High Sierra Family!
Thought I would try bringing something a little different to the venue…. In that interstitial pocket—after the main stage chords fade out but before the late-night venues fully swallow us up—I’m going to be sitting down somewhere on the grass with a notebook, a flashlight, and a deep well of forensic, unbelievable American history.
Seven generations of dangerous men, brilliant women and the stories hidden in plain sight. Bring a blanket or a chair. Let’s see where the lines connect.
“It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were... But in the end, it’s only a passing thing… this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, it will shine out the clearer. Those were the stories that stayed with you.”

Firework show

I booked a cabin in Grass Valley in order to get away from the fireworks where I live. Now I'm seeing that there will be a firework show in GV on the 4th. Does anyone know how long it lasts?? I'm trying to figure out how heavily I need to drug my very sensitive pup that night. Still very grateful for your overall lack of fireworks! My home will sound like a war zone for over a week.

Please help a confused boyfriend out

I'm writing in a little bit of a conundrum. My girlfriend is turning 40 and I want to plan a trip that will be a great time. We are getting a group of her friends together and are planning a weekend camping trip from 7/31 to 8/3 from the Bay Area. I am tasked with booking a site for those dates. It doesnt necessarily have to be a camp spot could also be lodging. I know its a little late in the game to booking, I've found myself procrastinating because I've never been to yuba river/grass valley area before and I don't want to drop the ball for her 40th. Thats where this post comes in. I'm expecting a group of about 7. There isn't any activities planned yet so I am open for all recommendations and possible activities. If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them. Thanks! 🙏

Events and Happenings in the Nevada County & Auburn areas

Hi folks! Wanted to share a little side project I've been working on.

I’ve always found it surprisingly hard to figure out what's going on around town—events seem scattered everywhere. So I built The Daily Nugget to pull it all together.

If you're familiar with Fun Cheap SF, this has a similar vibe: clean navigation with filters like Today, This Week, This Weekend, plus categories for Dog Friendly, Kid Friendly, and Free & Cheap.

Plus, since we're in the Gold Country, I added a specific feature where you can check Yuba River fork flows on demand—handy if you’re planning to hit the water.

It covers Nevada County and Auburn area events. Still early days, so any feedback on what’s missing or how to make it more useful would be awesome.

looking to attend High Sierra but concerned about parking

Hi friends,

looking to attend the fest for the first time to see some of my favorite acts, including Lebo and friends and tea leaf green.

I know I’m a little bit late to the game! I’m planning to come Friday and I don’t have a problem parking in the offsite lot, but I don’t see how I’ll be able to bring in my camping gear on the shuttle for the weekend and I’m pretty bummed because I don’t see how I could attend unless I can find a way in and out for my camping gear. Has anyone been in this situation before, have any recommendations, or know anybody selling an on-site parking pass?

thanks!

High Sierra Music Festival 2026 Companion App (No Ads or Trackers)

Hey everyone!

(App link in comments)

I’ve enjoyed digging through the lineup and getting to know the artists, and I realized that I wanted a simple way to figure out who I wanted to see and when, so I built this app. Here's what's in it:

  • Now & Next: see what's playing live and what's coming up across all stages
  • Full Schedule: browse every set by day, stage, or artist
  • My Schedule: build your personal lineup with automatic conflict warnings when two sets overlap
  • Map & Arrival Info:  venue map, directions, and everything you need to get there
  • Works Offline:  loads once and runs without cell service, perfect for the meadow

I built it for myself, but it's way more fun to share! Use it, pass it along, and I'll see you out there.

There are no accounts, ads, or trackers, and everything you save stays on your own phone.

Peace,

HappyAnimals

Coffee shop to work from/take a call

Hey there - I'll be passing through GV tomorrow and wondering the best coffee shop I can work from and take a couple calls. Will be buying several coffees and breakfast so I'm not a complete mooch.

Thanks!
