Maybe I'm just getting old, but the "FLIP" era of EDM is getting old, REALLY fast

For context, I just turned 28 years old and have been going to festivals since I was 20. I've been listening to EDM since I was like 12 (Glitch Mob/Kaskade/Skrillex).

Ever since late 2024-ish, there has been a distinct pivot in the EDM world to primarily produce flips of popular pop songs or pump out remix after remix of other artists' songs instead of creating majority new, ORIGINAL albums/sets.

I watched the Griz B2B Wolli yesterday because fuck it, why not, and boy oh boy, that statement has never been more personified than in that set.

I could complain about the fact that every dubstep artist today is literally only playing a handful of the top 10 artists' most popular songs right now, but what I really want to cry about is the fact that 50% of every g-d d-mn set is a f-ing flip.

Listen... I love rap and I love pop - I went to college when psychedelic rap was in its prime, but holy shit, can we please get back to trying to create something new and original as opposed to playing it safe and just adding bass to a pop song that was in the Billboard Top10 thirteen years ago?

I'm posting this in the Griz Subreddit because I feel like Grant has fallen down this hole the hardest out of any prominent artist, mainly just since his return.

Last night, that set was 50% flips. You can literally go on YouTube and count the number of songs that were remixes or flips of popular pop songs... It was damn near half of them. Almost zero new or unreleased music which, for a main stage EDCLV premiere, is disappointing.

No new original album (side quest was literally 80% flips), and the majority of his new music has been collabs with up and coming artists who have skyrocketed to success in less than two years. This is just my opinion, but it feels like he is trying to ride the coattails of upcoming talent like Levity (nice guys, all they make are flips) and TapeB (also a cool dude - primarily flips).

That's my rant - probably will be downvoted for this. Its not just Grant who's doing it, but it just seems like such a fall off when you compare his music now to his Mad Lib days - a proverbial treasure trove of original, groundbreaking sound and talent. This same rant goes for all other artists in the dubstep/bass scene right now (Clozee and GJones will always be the exception). For the love of god, can we please get some original music again.

tl;dr: I'm an aging raver who is so f-ing tired of flips and wants to see more diverse sounds and original music from the artists I once worshiped.

A post from a jaded old guy

Apologies for the long-winded post, but, if you can't tell, I was obviously very passionate about this man and his music. After seeing clips of this Wooli B2B at EDC, this shit truly breaks my heart to see. I'll probably get downvoted for this by the youngins of the fanbase, but fuck it, this is just my opinion and I know others feel the same way.

I first started listening to Griz in 2012 when my late friend showed me Mad Liberation. Being a former sax player in school, I was immediately drawn to his music. Griz then became my absolute all time favorite artist from the moment I first saw him live at my first campout festival ever at Summer Camp 2013 (this set is recorded and on SoundCloud, I highly advise you to give it a listen). The set was full of Mad Lib tunes and he was teasing music off of Rebel Era before its release.

I saw every Griz show I possibly could from then-on-out. Several years of Summer Camp, to several years of Grizmas, to rooftop DJ sets in Chicago, Mad Lib party in Detroit, and every midwest tour stop I could possibly make it to. Griz had some of the most creative and innovative music in the game and there was really nothing that topped it for me. All Good Records was an absolute gold mine of talent. Griz, Manic Focus, The Floozies, Sunsquabi, just so much amazing music. To this day, the LowTemp/Liberated Music Showcase on Halloween of 2014 at The Rave in Milwaukee is one of my favorite nights of music I've ever experienced.  Exmag, Late Night Radio, Manic Focus, and Grizmatik. The energy in that place was absolutely palpable. All Good Records came shortly after this and it just felt like the electro funk/glitch hop scene was absolutely thriving.

Grizmas 2019 was the first time I really felt the shift, when he separated the 10-17 set from the "Full Flex" set. The 10-17 set was absolutely phenomenal and the Masonic was going completely bonkers; easily one of my favorite Griz sets I have ever seen. The Full Flex set the following night just did not do it for me. It just didn't feel like the Griz I had loved for so many years.

Then Covid came and we all got locked down, so that was the last time I had seen Griz play before the pandemic. Just like everyone else, I was so thirsty for a live music experience. North Coast 2021 comes around and my whole friend group came out for live music for the first time in MUCH too long. Griz was on the lineup, however, I was already going into it half-expecting something like the full flex set from the last Grizmas show I was at. To my surprise, it was even worse. Compared to what it once was, I couldn't have even told you that was Griz if I wasn't looking at the stage. Once he started producing music with artists like Jantsen (who also produced for Nectar) It honestly felt like he was trying to take the throne that Bassnectar had left vacant after getting cancelled in 2020. This is also when the feel of the crowd at a Griz show had completely changed from what it once was. It felt like Griz essentially became the refugee camp for Bassheads without a home.

I never hit Space Camp, nor his other curated event that's slipping my mind right now, but then Triple Rainbow comes around in 2022. Two nights of music at an amazing venue thats only an hour away from home? Alright, this is the last chance I'm giving Griz. According to the lineup of openers, I should expect to at least get one night of funky glitch hop, right? Night one passes, and, as expected, it's all dubstep. I maintain hope for night two, given that the lineup of openers that night, like CloZee, pointed to a night of Glitch Hop. Nope. Almost entirely dubstep. Again. CloZee had the best set of the weekend. At this point I have accepted that the golden days were over, and that my years of seeing Griz were truly coming to an end.

Ever since the marketing stunt (hiatus) he pulled, it has only gotten worse.  Largely making garbage brostep music and shitty "flips" of pop songs with all of the most over-recycled bass artists in the scene, and completely leaving his old music, his creativity, and his OG fans in the dust.  None of his old music gets rinsed anymore, almost as if the music and fans that made him famous never even existed. Each new song sounds the same as the last and the production value has become more important than the music. Am I old, salty, and jaded? Maybe I am. But God damn it, do I miss the Rebel Era and Say It Loud times. RIP to All Good Recs.

TL;DR: Watching his music slowly degrade into what it has become today has been absolutely heartbreaking. Griz has sadly become indistinguishable from all of the other tiktok bro step garbage because its what currently sells. Chasing the Golden Dollar.

My Griz Curse: lore dump/shitpost

I have a curse related to Griz. This is purely a personal lore dump but have to share, because my curse should be broken in 11 days 🤞

I’m in my mid-twenties. Griz was in his prime right when I came of age to be able to get into shows, and then just 2 years later, covid happened and then he went on hiatus. Spanning the past 7 years, I have had a total of 6 opportunities to see griz. Every single one has been ruined. Something insane or unfortunate has always happened. I call it my Griz curse. I genuinely have developed a borderline schizo delusion that the world is going to explode if I see griz because I have been so very unlucky and it genuinely feels like I’m not supposed to see one of my favorite artists live.

I bought a one day ticket to breakaway Ohio to 24 hour send Saturday just to finally make it happen. This is totally a doxx but I just sprained my neck at LAYZ + Kai wachi at breakaway Atlanta. A potential 7th instance of the curse.

Good news: I’m in a neck brace all week this week, it’s only a muscle sprain (spine is not affected), I’m on scheduled OTC ibuprofen for pain, a THC topical roller, wolverine stack (peptides) to speed up healing, and a prescription NSAID for spine inflammation that also helps the muscles but is being used to prevent cervical spine inflammation while my sprain heals. Doctor said I should be back in business if I lay low and stay compliant for the rest of the week and said I’m cleared for Ohio as long as I’m not in pain.

Moral of the story: the world might end when I make it to Ohio, and don’t headbang for 3.5 hours straight if you suspect your ❄️ has molly in it. I was rolling and couldn’t feel my injury until I came down the next day because of it.

Who’s ready to rage in Ohio?

Raise your weapon x A Moment Apart Outro

That Griz / Wooli b2b was special. Intro and outro were great, but man that Odesza x Deadmau5 remix they did to end their set was so sick!

G is so happy to be back, i gotta see him again soon.

Kandi for GRIZTRONICS

This is my first music festival, so I’ve been scouring Reddit to know what I can expect. Came upon “Kandi,” and now I’m in full craft-mode.

What are you bringing? And any requests on a favorite Mon?

what sunglasses is Griz wearing during Bonaroo 2023?

i remember reading a Reddit comment or a YouTube comment years ago. the comment said exactly the brand of these sunglasses. I bought myself a pair of these sunglasses and they fit PERFECTLY on my face. I lost them last year and for the life of me cannot find where i bought them. I also can’t find the original comment that showed me the link for where to buy them.

if anyone has any clue, please help me I’d be so grateful

Why did Pre-Sale Griztronic Buyers pay so much more?

I was excited for the Griztronics show at the Gorge and bought tickets and camping on presale. I paid $935 back in November and now the same camping passes are $625 on the main website. Seems pretty crazy to have an over $300 difference. I could understand maybe $50-$100 but I feel like this really screwed over the loyal presale buyers. What's your take?

Tips on getting a resale ticket?

Hey everyone! I have been looking around for a ticket to Griztronics as I wasn’t able to secure one on that hell of a Ticketmaster queue when they initially dropped. I commented here under the looking for tickets pin (and also on the GRiZ sub) but so far no response that was willing to use PayPal goods and services - very cautious of scammers - has anyone had any luck elsewhere?

Please let me know if you know of good reliable place to get a resale ticket that isn’t full of scammers. I’ve heard of Radiate (I haven’t tried it yet) and I was told Facebook can be a bit dicey but I’m curious of any experiences or advice you have. I love this scene but I’m still quite new to getting a ticket via resale.

Either way I live in Seattle so I’m hoping someone driving from out of state has changed their mind due to how high gas has gotten. Here’s hoping for the best. Definitely not trying to find the cheapest option either just one that I can trust!

Parking / groceries

Yo Griztronics fam!! We’re flying in from Vegas and have never been to the gorge or Seattle so I got a few questions. We’re planning on grocery shopping at the Walmart by SeaTac after we fly in on Friday afternoon. Should I be concerned about stuff at the grocery store being out of stock and bought out by everyone coming in that weekend??? Also for parking, is GA parking for the gorge a long walk?? Debating with my group to see if we should be the star parking pass. 9 days away and we’re super excited to be with everyone, catch Griztronics and be at the gorge for our first time 😍🔥

First solo festival- need advice!

Hello! Griztronics is going to be my first solo festival! I have been to two previous festivals at the Gorge (Beyond & Bass Canyon) but alongside other people. I am a small (5’2), 29 year old afab nonbinary queer human.. so it does make me a little nervous, especially being in GA.

I used to be an avid raver years ago but have been out of the scene for awhile due to medical reasons. With that, I kinda lost touch with my previous rave fam and have been starting from scratch. I just so happened to be one of the lucky ones to score tickets and I know this is a show I cannot miss.

I know our community is so loving and welcoming, but I am mostly nervous about the social aspect and getting my stuff stolen. I can be socially awkward, especially when tired, and since I’ve been out of the scene, I just got extra pre-rave jitters. I used to be very confident putting myself out there but have since become a bit reserved again. I keep telling myself once the bass hits my body, it’ll all be okay haha.

I am still getting everything together for camp and made sure to purchase a Lunchbox hydro pack for in the venue.

I appreciate anything yall have to say <3

Bag Policy and other questions

Looking for some info about bag policy. For example Seven Stars was clear bags only. Haven't been able to find any info for The Gorge yet and we wanna be prepared obviously. Also what about bringing blankets, inflatable couches etc. to chill on. The website does say anything about these things. Just seeing if anyone has seen anything that I haven't. Thanks y'all!
