Maybe I'm just getting old, but the "FLIP" era of EDM is getting old, REALLY fast
For context, I just turned 28 years old and have been going to festivals since I was 20. I've been listening to EDM since I was like 12 (Glitch Mob/Kaskade/Skrillex).
Ever since late 2024-ish, there has been a distinct pivot in the EDM world to primarily produce flips of popular pop songs or pump out remix after remix of other artists' songs instead of creating majority new, ORIGINAL albums/sets.
I watched the Griz B2B Wolli yesterday because fuck it, why not, and boy oh boy, that statement has never been more personified than in that set.
I could complain about the fact that every dubstep artist today is literally only playing a handful of the top 10 artists' most popular songs right now, but what I really want to cry about is the fact that 50% of every g-d d-mn set is a f-ing flip.
Listen... I love rap and I love pop - I went to college when psychedelic rap was in its prime, but holy shit, can we please get back to trying to create something new and original as opposed to playing it safe and just adding bass to a pop song that was in the Billboard Top10 thirteen years ago?
I'm posting this in the Griz Subreddit because I feel like Grant has fallen down this hole the hardest out of any prominent artist, mainly just since his return.
Last night, that set was 50% flips. You can literally go on YouTube and count the number of songs that were remixes or flips of popular pop songs... It was damn near half of them. Almost zero new or unreleased music which, for a main stage EDCLV premiere, is disappointing.
No new original album (side quest was literally 80% flips), and the majority of his new music has been collabs with up and coming artists who have skyrocketed to success in less than two years. This is just my opinion, but it feels like he is trying to ride the coattails of upcoming talent like Levity (nice guys, all they make are flips) and TapeB (also a cool dude - primarily flips).
That's my rant - probably will be downvoted for this. Its not just Grant who's doing it, but it just seems like such a fall off when you compare his music now to his Mad Lib days - a proverbial treasure trove of original, groundbreaking sound and talent. This same rant goes for all other artists in the dubstep/bass scene right now (Clozee and GJones will always be the exception). For the love of god, can we please get some original music again.
tl;dr: I'm an aging raver who is so f-ing tired of flips and wants to see more diverse sounds and original music from the artists I once worshiped.
