My girls said headband wigs were beginner friendly… so I tried one. How’d I do?

It's my first time ever wearing a wig, so I went with a headband wig that kinda matched our natural texture so it wouldn’t look too “wiggy” on me? Any advice?

Zainab Johnson (Aleesha) Hair Appreciation

I recently just finished watching Upload. The two black ladies in the main cast were super amazing.
Watching the show, I was mostly fixated on Aleesha (Zainab Johnson). I was particularly drawn to the ways her character’s hair was styled.

Checking her out irl, I believe this was a situation where her personality morphed into the character and it was still a breath of fresh air to see.

The styling choices were just right on point. It’s been a while I’ve seen anyone in the media that embraced their hair this fully. As someone trying out different styles for my hair, I was really inspired. It really made me proud when she appeared on the screen. My black girl senses were so awakened every time.

I believe our hair is not meant to be boring and we should be expressive enough with our hair as we are with everything else.

I’ve been going on and on about the same point but I still don’t think it captures it enough how happy I was when she was in a scene.

Rainy Day Hair

Hey everyone.

I have a question. What hairstyles are you wearing if it is raining or going to be humid? I had a wonderful twist-out the other day. When I got off work, it was pouring down rain. By the time I got home, I didn't want to look myself in the mirror. Having high porosity hair, I knew it had shriveled up to a brown cotton ball on my head. I just went straight to the sink and washed my hair. To further complicate things, it's supposed to rain off and on all week. I did a blow out and very quickly put four cornrows in before the humidity had time to set in. I thought about putting two-strand twists in and wearing headwraps the rest of the week, but sometimes, I just want my hair and scalp to breathe.

For context, I have a chin length bob that I almost exclusively wear in twist-outs. Every now and then, I'll do some feed-in box braids if I'm going to have a busy work week. I have found this hair cut is best for me to give the illusion that I have a head full of hair (I have systemic lupus). I am able to disguise the shortness in the back when it is in cornrows by putting a couple of clip-ins in and creating a messy type of ponytail.

I thought about learning to do a wash-n-go but I'm not sure how it will hold up in high humidity. In addition, how do I sleep on it and refresh it. Any and all recommendations are welcome.

What's your opinion of this hairstyle on me?

This is actually a layered-cut wig and I really like the color, but I keep going back and forth about the style itself. Part of me likes the volume and shape, but another part of me is wondering if I should straighten it instead? Maybe it would make me look a little younger or softer idk.

Need honest opinions because I’ve been staring at myself too long at this point lol.

How much/what hair for boho french curl braids?

I’m getting my hair braided this weekend and I’m trying to figure out what hair to get for boho french curl braid that look the most like the first picture. The first picture is what I’m going for the most in terms of length (hip length), volume, and color. Second picture is just another volume and part size example.

I think the colors in the first picture are 1B and 30? I spoke with my braider about what hair she recommends and how much but I was left a little confused. The braids will use normal braiding hair so she recommended 2 packs of x-pression pre-stretched braiding hair. For the human hair though, she recommended 2 packs of 22” deep bulk sensationnel empire bulk hair.

That left me with a few questions:

  1. For the braiding hair: should I get 1 pack of 1B and 1 pack of 30?
  2. For the human hair: Will “deep bulk” give me the same look as picture #1? Or should I go for a different type of curl for french curls?
  3. Should I also get both 1B and 30 for the human hair? I have some doubts since it looks like only 30 was used in picture #1 (maybe also another color I’m not recognizing?)
  4. Is 22” too long for hip length? I’m not trying to go past that tbh

Fine 4C hair: braids or twists?

I have fine 4C hair and my hair hates knotless braids. Would it be a better idea to try smedium sized island twists? Has anyone tried them before and preferred them over knotless braids?

Help me choose my next hairstyle for my B-day???

Should I stick to colour 4/27/30 braids, black, colour 4, should I try a different style???

I like black cause it just represents me so well and I find that I take more selfies with it. I like the colour because it matches my complexion very well and I instantly feel pretty at all times. As for hairstyles, I think I prefer longer styles.

My birthday is the first week of June! I don’t know what to try or get, any recommendations would be great!!!

Update:
Thanks for all the responses, very grateful🩵🩵🩵
It seems like most people either like pics 4-6 or 10-12!!! So I’ll decide between those two. You guys are very sweet, very HAPPY I FOUND THIS PAGE😫😫😫

First “Hair Hat” 🩶🖤🤘🏾🤭

Here’s the first “hair hat” I’ve made for my mother. 😄

My mom has always been a 💯 natural hair woman. She had sisterlocks most of her life. They were down to her ass. Unfortunately, cancer and other health issues decided that her locks were no longer her identity. Now without much hair, she consistently wears headwraps & turbans. She doesn’t really like wigs, but….

Recently she’s been amazed by how I’ve applied my creativity to my own hair. I’ve done lots of crochet styles and made myself an Afro wig. She’s expressed how much what I make for her is “better than store bought or even expensive custom styles she’s ordered”. I think her seeing me use “my talent” to personally make a wig for her feels much more “genuine to her than buying it from someone/somewhere else.

Anyhow, I look forward to her next “hat” for her - a gray/black Afro! ✊🏾

Sew in vs. Braids

hi everyone!

I am deciding between a sew in or braids for an upcoming trip. For context, I am traveling to Portugal to a beachy town and then to Lisbon for about a week and a half. I am looking for a style that is somewhat easy to maintain and can withstand water if i decide to go in the pool/ocean/etc. I would love to hear pros and cons of each style suggestion and if you think braids can you give some specific style ideas. I am really new to styling my hair (I usually just wear my hair straight natural) so any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. thank you!!!

Vacation Braid Hairstyles

Hey everyone,

I have fine thin curly hair (4a) and was looking for vacation hairstyles that could last 6 weeks despite getting them wet. I want a cute hairstyle that won’t cause a lot of tension on my hair. I was thinking of doing fulani goddess twists but i’m unsure how long they will last. Any suggestions/recommendations?

Thank you!
