Get the spotlight on hunger strikes at Adelanto detention camp

Over the last 24 hours, we’ve learned via local activists and independent journalist Nick Valencia that approximately 20 detainees being held at the notorious Adelanto ICE Processing Center are on a hunger strike. In their press release, they reported already being in poor health and underfed due to staff neglect, and are demanding due process, bond reform, improved conditions, adequate medical and mental health care, decent food, accountability for deaths at the facility and the right to organize and communicate.

At least four people - Ismael Ayala-Uribe, Gabriel Garcia-Aviles, Alberto Gutierrez Reyes and Jose Guadalupe Ramos-Solano - have died while being held at this GEO Group-run detention camp in San Bernadino County, California since September, with multiple accusations of staff denying folks necessary medical care. Detainees have reported physical and sexual abuse, said they’ve been refused a change of clothes, underwear or towels, and advocates have reported inadequate access to clean food and water and other unsafe and unsanitary conditions. It’s been the subject of multiple federal investigations and civil rights lawsuits, and the California Attorney General’s office has found staffing has failed to keep up with the growing number of detainees.

Families of migrants held at Adelanto and advocates are holding a virtual press conference tomorrow, May 20th, at 10AM ET/7AM PT. We’re being asked to help get more coverage of this hunger strike and detainees’ demand for the center to be shut down. Let’s do our part! We can reach out to local outlets to urge them to cover this protest, such as:

Listen up, ye scurvy, ink-stained bastards!

If yer tired of starin' at a blank page like a brainless desert rat, git yer lazy asses down to the Hesperia Branch Library. We’re gatherin' every Tuesday between the hours of 5:30 and 7:00 PM to bleed onto keyboards.

Here be the bloody code we follow:

  • We kick off by flappin' our gums fir the first 15 minutes. Git to know yer fellow scoundrels, brag about what miserable excuse for a creative project yer workin' on.
  • Lash yerself to the desk, shut your hole, and write for one bloody hour.
  • For the last 15 minutes ye git to bitch and moan about how yer writing went to shit. Share yer struggles or keep yer trap shut, there’s no bloody pressure either way.

If ye have any questions don't hesitate to leave a comment or send a message to meself or me co-host, u/RecentDeparture3836.

(This week's invite theme was given by u/HumbleFreedom)

Elote Alex on Highway 18 at Super Target

Wanted to share an experience and help out this local vendor. His name is Elote Alex and he's the guy thats on his vendor bike next to the Super Target on Hwy 18. I don't normally get food from street vendors. If I get esquites or elotes, its usually from food trucks but figured why not give him a shot.

Got the equite for $5 and tipped him another dollar because its not easy showing up everyday. I wasn't expecting much but this was probably one of the better esquites I've had. The corn was sweet, good crunch, savory, and spicy.

Reasonable price, great find. Takes Zelle too which makes it easy.

Hopefully this brings more business to him. Nice guy, always hustling and showing up. And actually has good food.

So what's the consensus on the new Victorville library?

In my opinion, it's mediocre at best.

Yes, it's better than the old library but it feels like they barely modified the original bar and grill and the infrastructure of the club still dominates the building. There is awkward and/or poor use of space, the children's section is disproportionately large and there is absolutely no privacy.

I fear that the Hesperia Library will continue to reign supreme as the High Desert's best library.

What does everyone else think?

Business idea

I’m thinking of opening a blinker repair shop. I’ve noticed no one’s blinker seems to work up here and could be a great opportunity for a specialized shop.

Is anyone else finding that the bugs are becoming more aggressive?

I live in a crappy 44 year old apartment building in Victorville and for as long as I've lived here, I've had bug problems every Spring and Summer.

Over the past few years, I have noticed that the bugs are now appearing in the Autumn and Winter as well and recently, the traps have simply stopped working. I've tried changing brands to no avail.

Roaches and Spiders in my unit seem to be actively avoiding the traps and this morning, I came across a wolf spider that started hopping towards me. According to Google, wolf spiders cannot hop but I know what I saw.

Is anyone else finding that bugs are becoming more aggressive and resilient ( possibly due to climate change ) or do I just have a mutant roach+spider problem in my apartment specifically?

Struggling to find employment I really need a job

Hey high desert community i been going on my bike pedaling everywhere looking for work unemployment is paying me breadcrumbs , having no job is causing so much friction between me and my family even though they see I’m really putting effort to find employment.

I have a solid resume 5+ years of warehouse and fast food experience nobody is hiring cause all these employers are fully staffed.

It’s very exhausting and dangerous I no longer go job hunting on my bike cause it’s extremely tiring I’m constantly taking breaks chugging water. I been applying online as well going on indeed applying to all THESE PLACES.

ANYBODY that has a job out here right now weather it’s warehouse or fast food please let me know if they actually hiring and if I will 100% get hired
I’m done pedaling on my bike drenched in sweat just to get the same rundown.

been out of work for months now. It’s starting to really get to me I do not have a car and I don’t have anybody to help me with rides.. anything helps… already tried going union , trade etc but having a car is a must for pretty much everything. I just need a full time job so my life can get better.
I’m in Hesperia near main st by super target I need a job close to my house saving up for a car. This is completely horrendous times in my life.

An Orange Goodnight

As the sun started to retire for the night it began by pulling down the orange shades in readiness for the darkness to overcome. I will take the recollection of this sunset to keep this memory in place and will do the same tomorrow until the sun sets again.

Can Anyone Tell Me What I Found in This Wash in Yucca Valley, CA.

It looks like coral? I’m 3,000 feet above sea level in the high desert of California? Wondering if anyone else has found anything like this?

Stuck for 3 days in desert sands between Lucerne Valley/Johnson Valley (30 mins from Victorville)

Hey yall! I’m going on day 3 of being stuck in the sand here. 5 mins north of 247, right by Lucerne Valley.
Anyone around with a truck that might be able to help?
It’s sure beautiful as heck out here but I’m starting to run low on water and food and I sure wouldn’t mind getting out of here finally. Been digging, winching, jacking for 3 days straight with limited luck.
Feel like an absolute idiot for getting myself into this mess, very excited to get out!

I’ve got 1x $100 bill, a bunch of Mexican ice creams, some food, and homemade beef jerky as a reward :))
