looking for advice at buying a 1997 Hilux

Hi, I’m living in Canada and am pretty interested in a Hilux someone was offering online, but given I’m pretty new to the model (I’ve driven 4Runners and Tacomas before) I wanted to see what this community thought about the ad before making a proper offer to the owner. What do you think about this vehicle? Is there anything of immediate note given people’s knowledge of this particular year/model?

“1997 Toyota hilux ln108 4x4 turbo diesel 2l-te, 287,000kms, Automatic transmission It's loaded with the following parts: Holset he2211w turbo Front mount Yonaka intercooler Custom intercooler piping Jrp EGT & boost gauge 4x4 snorkel kit Old Man Emu 2-inch full suspension lift kit 1-inch body lift 35x12.5x15 Haida Mud Champ (hd869) tires Toy Factory Fab Tube Bumper 8500lbs Keeper winch w/ synthetic rope Gear America winch fairlead Electrical & Lighting: Auxbeam 8-gang switch panel 3-inch Strands lighting pods Two 6-inch Siberia Strands lighting units OEM Toyota rain deflectors LSD in the rear. Timing belt done 6 months ago. Asking: $22,000 CAD (16,000 USD)

Any advice is appreciated.

N70 rattling noise

Just bought an 07 n70. When in gear and I start accelerating and take my foot off the pedal it has a metallic rattling noise—like a pocket of coins rattling very fast. Does not happen when in neutral. Any help please?

Advice

Hey team. Just after some advice.

Driving my n70 and all of a sudden the wheel lent in as seen in the photos. Originally I thought the lower ball joint so I replaced the LCA instead of having to press the ball joint in.

After this it is still the same. I will be taking it to a workshop in the coming days but just seeing if anyone had some ideas on other possibilities.

The old ball joint was extremely worn.

2000 hilux 3l turbo manual 1KE TE problem with idle

Hey Team

Have owned this hilux for about 6 months now it my dream ute love it. Been having trouble with the idle it drops to 600rpm for a second them back up to the normal 700rpm but only when engine is up to temp. Thought it might be the injector pump but no leaks and no problem with power. Maybe a sensor somewhere throwing it off? Shop wants $500 just to do some tests thought I would check here first if anyone has had a similar problem.

Thanks

Got a 2021 Hilux

On Friday I’ve traded in my trusty 4x4 Škoda Octavia 3rd gen for a 2021 Hilux 2.8D. It has 67k km on it so I’m pretty happy. I’ve got a few opportunities to drive it around, even a little off road action and I really like it.

In future the car will take us beyond the arctic circle like the Škoda did and we will put a hardtop with roof tent on it for some more overlanding action.

Hopefully it’ll last us a long time.

Do you have any good recommendations for what to always have in the car? Thanks for any tips and tricks.

2000 Hilux Raider modification advice

Hiya,

I’ve got the 3L diesel, non-4x4 model of the 2000 Hilux Raider, and I am seeking advice on how I can modify or improve anything on this vehicle, both performance wise (engine, mechanics) and aesthetics.

If anyone has any suggestions, I’d love to hear them. I’m based outside of Cape Town, South Africa, in case you’re a fellow South African with local tips and links.

Full disclosure - I am not clued up on this kinda thing, but keen to learn, and I want to improve the driving experience.

PS: Sometimes I wonder if I should sell this car, and get a newer-but-still-2nd-hand Toyota that has more “creature comforts” like a Fortuna D4D with automatic transmission. Is that the move, or should I rather put some time and effort into making this Hilux more fun? (The fuel consumption and the latest diesel prices is what motivated this consideration)

Hilux dash push switches

Hi there, Brought these switches from a Vic business, $42 each for the doubles.

Two have failed within 18 months, one the back lights failed, the other the actual switching operation failed. All relays they drive have back-emf protection diodes.

Really chooses an amazing time to die; when I need my winch to get out.

Does anyone know a quality supplier that doesn't import Chinese cheap shit? (this business admitted to buying them in bulk from China and stated he had troubles dealing with them)

Thanks

About to Join the Cool Kids Here!

Just made a deposit for delivery of a new white 4dr awd diesel today. Expected to arrive here in Chiriqui Province in Panama by the end of June.

Looks like this one, but adding black running boards and a soft bed cover, upgrading the wheels

We don't get what's the '26 model for the rest of the world until August of 2027, but, tbh, I'm more comfortable with a vehicle at the end of a proven generation than one at the beginning of a new one.

Just turned 62. I plan to stick around for a few more decades, but everyone tells me this truck's going to end up outliving me 😆.

Howling noise coming from rebuilt diff

Hi, I have recently rebuilt my rear differential on my kun26 due to worn pinion bearings. I have installed new ring and pinion along with all bearings and crush sleeve. I set my bearing pre load and set my backlash to 0.16mm. However upon test driving it I have a howling noise upon acceleration which disappears when I remove my foot from the throttle. I assumed that this was due to my backlash being too tight. I have since adjusted my backlash to be slightly looser and am still hearing the same noise.

I have used bearing blue on the ring gear to check where the pinion touches it and it seems to be making contact in the middle of the tooth.

Any suggestions as to what could be causing me this grief?

Thanks

Hilux Radio Fascia Adaptor

Got these adapters with the new Kenwood unit I put in a while ago - however they do not fit flush. The second pic is the right hand side without it installed. Have I just got a cheap set which do not fit, or is this usual? Nothing I can do about that top gap either? 2005 mk7

New Surf Owner, 2TLE care advice

Hello, I just purchased a 1992 Surf, its my first Toyota and first diesel. I would love some advice on taking care of the engine / drivetrain(automatic) to keep it running well. How often should I replace the fuel filter / glow plugs? What fuel additives should I be using / what ones to avoid? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks!

Oil in the coolant?! Hilux 2004 Tourer 3.4l v6 petrol

I am very scared that I got scammed buying this 324.000km Hilux
It rides just fine.

But it seems there is oil in the radiator. At least on the top - in the excess box there seems to be pink coolant fluid.

Do you guys think the head gasket is blown? That would be devastating.

Would really appreciate some advice and approximate how much parts would cost roughly. (not the repairing all together)
