Theory about Little Dipper and The Pod

I was recently thinking about the songs Little Dipper and The Pod and how they’re placed on You’d Prefer an Astronaut. Both songs are back to back for a reason and I don’t know if anyone else has thought of this before. The song Little Dipper is about two people feeling trapped and relying on each other to escape from whatever situation is making them feel trapped. The chorus of this song is a different voice from the one speaking in the verses. This voice is pleading with the two people who are trying to escape to abort their plans to escape.

The Pod, on the other hand, can be interpreted as being about two people dealing with substance abuse as shown in the lines “And I need this fucking fix and I beg her to pick from / One of a million ways to feel no pain” and “She opens her box of tricks and begs me to pick from / One of a billion ways to feel no pain” as well as other lines that could be interpreted as being about drug abuse.

Now, why would I be talking about a connection between the two songs? My theory is that The Pod is told from the perspective of the person who’s speaking during the chorus of Little Dipper. The two people in Little Dipper are the same people from The Pod and are using drugs to escape reality. Little Dipper is told from the perspective of the people in The Pod and the person in Little Dipper who’s pleading with them to abort their plans of escape are trying to save them from falling further into drug addiction.

I could be completely wrong but I just thought my theory was interesting and I thought someone here would find it interesting too.

Why I like the robins hasn’t been played live since 2000.

I’m going to their concert on Friday so I was looking at the setlist to see what to expect. Why I like the robins is my favorite song by them and I was a tad bit sad they haven’t played it live so far. In fact, I went through their setlist history on setlist fm and it looks like they haven’t played it live since December 29, 2000! Which is pretty crazy because it’s their 3rd most streamed song on Spotify. I wonder why they don’t play it live anymore? 🤔

BUT maybe they’ll surprise their native Illinois fans and play it for us . Even if they don’t, I’m still very grateful they are even playing at all. Just wanted to shed some light on how rare that song is now from them.

Edit: actually they played it in 2015. But still, it seems like such a rare occurrence. A few times in between decades is crazy.

Guitar nerds at Slideaway NYC?

Anyone else geek out over the guitars and gear used throughout the night?

I was particularly excited to see that Matt used his Firebird throughout the night.

I thought it was also cool to see Tim's Xiphos, Prodigy, and Dunables.

But there was one Matt used during Folding I didn't recognize, anyone know what it was?

Merch

I’m gonna be at the show this Saturday in Chicago and was just wondering how the shirts fit?

Kind of a silly question, but I’m asking because I’m currently at a weird in-between size where the best fitting shirts I own are either mediums that run big or larges that run small, and if I’m shelling out $35 for one single T-shirt I wanna be sure I don’t regret the size I buy lol

Any insight on this is greatly appreciated!

The Summoning from Saturday

Here’s 27 seconds of one of Hum’s most monstrous riffs from Saturday’s show. Goosebumps the whole time and still buzzing from it.

YPAA - Vinyl Question

Hey gang! I hope you can help me out with my question.

I have this version of You’d Prefer An Astronaut on vinyl:

https://www.discogs.com/release/6433296-Hum-2-Youd-Prefer-An-Astronaut

It sounds good. BUT -

The 2023 Polyvinyl reissue of YPAA has many wonderful reviews of how good it sounds, and many of those mention how much better it sounds than older vinyl versions.

If anyone out there has heard both my 2013 RCA version and the 2023 Polyvinyl version - can you compare the two for me? Does the 2023 blow my 2013 away? If so - I need to get it.

Thanks to anyone that can help!

Tickets to second night of slide away in Chicago.

I've got 3 tickets and two fast passes to the second night of slide away, got rear ended by some asshole the first hour of my road trip there. Car's totaled and i'm pretty injured so there's no way I'm gonna be able to go :/. I think I paid something like 400$ total for everything but i'm more than willing to negotiate a price I don't really care how low, just hoping someone else will be able to make the most of what I couldn't.

NYC experience

Got to see them Friday and wow it was unforgettable! I’ve been a fan since high school and got to see them in Charlotte in 2015 when i was 19, and I remember feeling like i was among the youngest fans at that show. But I turned 30 a few days ago and was surprised at how many young people turned out at the show. Their enthusiasm was incredible and was really cool to see! I’m sure Hum felt the love!

So many cool people at the show too. There was a girl who made her own shirt with a bunch of band patches on it and when I said how much I loved Magnified she gave me a spare Failure patch which was awesome!

10/10 experience! Only regret I didn’t splurge on another ticket for night 2 lol

RCA Streaming Rights?

With the band gaining popularity and with the new remasters and songs being added to the end of downward is heavenward I wonder how long RCA Records has streaming rights to Hum’s discography. I hope Hum can get it back soon so we can get Puppets,Aphids and Boy with stick on streaming. Also the likely hood of new music is not much but Jason does know how to play Inklings and it would be a real treat if they’d record it with him and release it.
