Help with values please

Hey guys, I have the following devices that I want to sell and I have no idea what I should sell them for. Please let me know your opinions!

2015 13in MacBook Air
2013 21.5in iMac
2011 27in Thunderbolt Display

I got a $50 offer for the Thunderbolt Display but I feel like that’s extremely low and I may as well hang onto it for that.

I love the way the displays are built and look even 15 years later but the resolution is quite bad now. Is it worth it to hang onto any of these items or get what I can for them?

Just found this survivor

Supposedly it has water damage. I was flabbergasted that it booted. Thinking about using it in target display mode.

I am getting some of those erratic pixels that indicate a dying GPU.

What do y’all recommend I do with this thing?

iMac 27” 2017 becoming extremely slow after a few minutes — SSD issue?

Hey everyone,

My iMac 27-inch 2017 has suddenly become painfully slow and I’m trying to figure out what’s going on.

About 3 years ago I replaced the original drive with an SSD, and honestly the machine felt amazing after that. No issues at all until recently.

Now it does something weird:

  • It boots up fine
  • First few minutes are normal
  • Then it slowly starts crawling
  • Finder gets laggy
  • Apps take forever to open
  • Beachballs everywhere

I already tried reinstalling macOS from scratch, thinking it was software related, but the problem stayed exactly the same.

At this point I’m wondering if:

  • the SSD could be dying,
  • it’s overheating/throttling,
  • maybe a bad SATA cable or thermal sensor,
  • or even RAM issues.

What confuses me is that it always starts fine, then gets worse after a little while.

Has anyone here seen this before on a 2017 iMac?

I refurbished an iMac only to blunder...

I refurbished this older iMac—what I think to be is a mid 2010 model with a 21.5" display—with the idea of using it as a monitor for my PC with Target Display Mode. But as I'm learning now, it seems target display mode only works with other Macs, so I can't use it with my PC.

The story is, my cousin had this machine and upgraded to something else. She didn't need it anymore and was going to bring it to a rage room for smashing.... so I rescued it.

It ran hot and I knew it was older, so I opened it up to replace the thermal paste. I was greeted by a lot of dust. I did my best at removing all of the parts from the shell and blew it out real good with an air compressor. I opened the covers on the fans and brushed out the blades as best as I could. I replaced thermal paste on the CPU and GPU die, and cut new thermal pads for the VRAM. Lastly, I replaced the mechanical hard drive for an SSD and mounted it with double-sided tape.

I've never owned an Apple product before now, and it was really fun cleaning this old machine out—even though I was very busy with life and had to clean this out over the course of 4 days.

As for using it as just a monitor... I know I can pair the panel with a different control board, but if I'm spending money for a good quality board, I might as well just purchase a new monitor. I also just refurbished this whole thing and don't want to waste it.

I thought about splitting the partition and putting a Linux OS with the macOS, and upgrade the macOS to something newer than OS High Sierra that it was previously running... what can I do with this machine?

Do you have any old 4k/5k iMacs laying around?

I’m building a companion app for your old iMac to connect to your new MacBook Pro and act as an external monitor for both mirrored and extended mode.

They connect via a wired connection, either thunderbolt if available, or Ethernet cable (on my new MacBook Pro M5 I use an Ethernet cable to usbc adapter, into my old iMac Ethernet port). The app also functions on intel/Silicon series MacBooks too, if you have one of those laying around and want to use it.

Currently at 99% development complete, hoping to have the app and website full launched by early this week. It comes with a full access 7 day free trial, no need to give any credit card or information to access it. Just download the apps! I need as many people to test as I can get, so please take advantage! Zero expectations for purchase, just hoping to get some testers on board!

Right now you can sign up for the waitlist at the website, or if you’d rather just wait a few days that’s fine too! But if you sign up I won’t spam you, I’ll just send you one email once the app is launched! 🙂

Used iMac for PC user?

Hey everyone,

I’ve been a PC/Windows user for years, but since I already use an iPhone, I’ve been thinking about trying out an iMac/macOS for a while now.

I’m looking for a used iMac just to play around with and use for “fun stuff” alongside my normal Windows PC. Nothing professional — mostly browsing, media consumption, maybe some photos, music, and just exploring the Apple ecosystem.

Important part:
I really want to spend as little money as possible 😅

So my questions are:

  • Which used iMac model would you currently recommend?
  • Is there a specific year/model that’s considered the best “sweet spot”?
  • Better to get an older Intel iMac, or should I save up for Apple Silicon/M1 instead?
  • What should I look out for when buying used?

And in general:

  • What are the biggest strengths of the iMac/macOS in your opinion?
  • What does Apple/macOS do especially well?
  • What is an iMac NOT really suited for?
  • Are there things that might annoy a long-time Windows user?

Curious to hear your opinions!!!

2014 iMac with 8Gb RAM, useful again after installing Linux Mint

I got this 2014 iMac for free, with 8Gb RAM and 1TB Fusion Drive, running macOS 11 Big Sur. It was being given away for free by someone at work. It had belonged to their dad but gave it away after upgrading. The iMac is in great shape physically. I took it in because I figured I could play around with it as a home media server. I did use it like that for a few months, but it was really, really slow, sometimes taking several minutes to reboot or launch an app. Spinning beach ball seemed to be the main operating mode. Plus since it’s capped at macOS 11, a lot of newer apps won’t install or work. So I lost interest, stopped using it, and it started gathering dust.

Yesterday I was rearranging things to prepare for a house guest, and I rediscovered the old iMac. I figured, what the heck, got nothing to lose, let’s install Linux Mint on it and see if it runs any faster or more usefully. So I booted up from a live image of Linux Mint XFCE “Zena” erased the internal 5400 RPM HDD, and installed it.

Wow, I was super impressed. It felt like Linux Mint breathed new life into this 12-year-old iMac. First of all, Linux Mint + Firefox takes up only around 30 percent of RAM, so there is actually room to do things without paging to the very slow hard drive. I was able to install TailScale and connect it to my TailNet. I installed NoMachine and connected via Remote Desktop to a headless Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Homelab that’s running my home Jellyfin server. The iMac is still no speed demon, but certainly now much more responsive to the point where it’s actually useful. I can sit in my home office and use the iMac to monitor my server, play videos and music, cycle through pictures from my local photo library. It’s gone from doorstop to desktop, and I’m feeling quite pleased with the project.

Free software replacement for Target Display Mode – Intel iMac + Apple Silicon MacBook

Apple killed Target Display Mode when they moved to Apple Silicon. If you have an Intel iMac (2017+) that you can't use as a monitor anymore, I made TargetBridge.

It streams your MacBook screen over a Thunderbolt cable to the iMac — up to 5K resolution, no dongle, free and open source.

**Requirements:** MacBook Apple Silicon + Intel iMac 2017+ + Thunderbolt cable

**GitHub:** https://github.com/swellweb/targetBridge

Two apps: one on the MacBook (sender), one on the iMac (receiver). Build scripts included, takes about 2 minutes.

Just published v1.0.0 with pre-built apps — no Terminal needed! Download here: https://github.com/swellweb/targetBridge/releases/tag/v1.0.0

Just released v1.1.0 — the receiver now bundles all dependencies, no Homebrew needed. Just download, unzip and double-click: https://github.com/swellweb/targetBridge/releases/latest

Just unzip and double-click. Grant Screen Recording on first launch for the sender.

Update: just launched on Product Hunt today if anyone wants to check it out → https://www.producthunt.com/products/targetbridge?launch=targetbridge

Stuck Screen and Identification on Older iMac

Hello all!

I stumbled across an older iMac when cleaning out my house. It boots up, but gets stuck on these two screens (in photos). Does anyone know how to get past this? It only has a keyboard.

Also, can someone help me please identify it and possibly a price I can sell it for? There are no visible markings and if it helps, it has a disk drive built in.

Thank you all for the help in advance!!

Edit: [solved]

Advice for aging device?

HUGE fan of the iMac. 27in 5K model was my dream computer. Finally able to get it in 2017. I have done everything to keep this baby going, including booting from external SSD and recent fresh install of macOS. In truth, it runs beautifully!

Unfortunately, it doesn't run Citrix Workspace, which I need for my job. It's frankly the primary bit of software I am in all day long. I've tried using Luna Display to make this an external display for my MacBook Air and it is INCREDIBLY buggy.

I brought this device like 1-2 years ago to trade in to Apple, and they convinced me not to because of how great the condition of it is and how beautiful the screen is. I agree -- it's STILL the nicest display I have ever used.

Any advice or ideas as to what I can/should do with it? I had to just pitch it or trade it in, but I am getting frustrated with the Citrix issue and Luna, and know I otherwise just won't use it any more as a result... (Notably, I did call LOTS of IT support, and the damn thing is just outdated, nothing else to possibly fix).

Many, many thanks!

What’s better in 2026? iMac Pro vega 64 or iMac 2020 with 5700 xt? Which one will last longer and which one is better? After all, the iMac Pro has better cooling, and if you put heavy load on it, it won’t struggle as much.

iMac A1311 stuck at Apple Logo with progress bar
