Am I Elle Woods Yet?

The 90’s girly colorful tech aesthetic remains strong in me. I’m about to start my bachelor’s program and this felt like an appropriate work horse for this degree & my masters in the future. I almost went with green as it’s my true favorite color but this just felt oh so right. 🩷

On August 15, 1998, the original iMac went on sale.

Apple badly needed a hit, and another beige box with slightly better specs wasn't going to change anything.

Steve Jobs and Jony Ive took a much bigger swing. The iMac was rounded, translucent and Bondi Blue. You could recognize it from across a room, which was unusual at a time when most computers looked like office equipment.

The handle on top was especially clever. The iMac was a heavy desktop machine, so the handle was never really about portability. It made the computer feel approachable. People understood immediately where to touch it and how to engage with it.

That friendly exterior took serious work behind the scenes. Apple had to rethink plastics, colors, tooling and manufacturing. Because the case was translucent, even the internal parts had to look orderly. The design team wasn't brought in at the end to make the machine prettier. Design shaped how the entire product got built.

The choices inside were just as bold. The floppy drive was gone, familiar ports disappeared and USB became the standard. Plenty of critics predicted disaster. Instead, Apple sold around 800,000 iMacs by the end of 1998, cemented its comeback and kicked off a run of products that reshaped the company.

Anyone building a physical product can take something from this. Good design isn't a coat of paint applied at the end. It reaches into engineering, manufacturing, usability, marketing and the feeling someone gets when they pick up the finished object.

A lot of today's products are beautifully made and strangely forgettable. Phones are nearly identical glass slabs. Laptops are silver rectangles. Cars are becoming large touchscreens surrounded by bodywork. Appliances have shed their buttons, their character and in some cases their basic ease of use.

The iMac proved people will form a real attachment to a well-designed piece of technology. Nearly three decades later, physical products could use a little more of that courage and a little less gray. The hockey-puck mouse, though, can stay in 1998.

iMac Late 2009 27" and iPad Pro M2 12.3" - Target Display Mode Success!

Took me a bit to get this working but finally got it!

I'm using a Mini DP to USB-C cable, OCLP upgraded to Monterey, and Bluetooth Off on the iMac. Next up, I need to figure out why sound isn't working from the iMac speakers. I'm also curious if a better USB-C hub for the iPad would be compatible. Unfortunately, the cheap one I have won't pass through correctly.

Does anyone else use a setup like this? Any tips or tricks in general?

Should I wait for the new iMac or I can safely buy an M4 model?

I am not new to Macs, I already have an M1 Max (got it dirt cheap a few months ago) and an M4 Air but I always found iMacs and their all-in-one factor fascinating and want to ditch my at home PC with an Apple AIO. I am considering an M4 (10C) 16GB/512GB model, as I mainly do basic stuff on my computers (web browsing, e-mail, Office, you name it), so no video editing or anything like that. Should I wait for the upcoming new model (I believe they will launch this October) or just buy the M4?

Mid 2011 iMac Recovery HD taking up most of the space and blocking resize

I was attempting to reset my old family iMac to repurpose it for other uses. It was giving me some trouble due to some weird partitioning that was preventing the 1TB hard drive from being usable in one partition.

Through my process I had deleted a partitioning assigning it to Free Space using the terminal. For whatever reason this memory was then assigned to the Apple_Boot Recovery HD partition giving it a size of ~750GB. When attempting to resize I am told that I cannot resize this volume.

In addition the diskutil UI is not allowing me to partition the Physical disk.

I have run repair on both the Disk and the Recovery HD volume and both are reported to be okay.

I am lost on to how I can recover the free space to be used in a new partition for running the computer on. I have attached some photos with info.

Please let me know anything I should try.

2020 Intel iMac – DFU restore successful, but macOS installation/recovery keeps failing….. please help

Hi everyone,
I’m having trouble getting my 2020 Intel iMac running again and I’m hoping someone might have some ideas.
iMac: 2020 27-inch Intel model with T2 chip
RAM: 96GB
macOS before the problem: Tahoe
Original macOS: Big Sur
The problem started after I left the iMac in sleep mode while I was at work. When I came home, it had powered off following what appeared to be a kernel panic while entering or waking from sleep.
After that, it would no longer boot normally.
I spent several hours troubleshooting through Recovery and Terminal and found indications that some files were corrupted. Eventually I erased the internal drive with the intention of doing a completely clean macOS installation.
Since then I have tried:
● Internet Recovery
● Erasing/reformatting the internal drive
● Reinstalling macOS through Recovery
● Creating and booting from a Big Sur USB installer
● DFU Revive using another Mac
● DFU Restore using another Mac
● Activating the Mac again after the DFU restore
● Startup Security Utility / attempting to allow external booting
The DFU Revive and DFU Restore both complete successfully, so communication with the T2 chip appears to be working.
The problem is that I still cannot successfully install macOS.
Internet Recovery/macOS installation repeatedly fails at approximately the 14-minute remaining mark. I have also been unable to get the Big Sur USB installer to successfully complete the installation.
I chose Big Sur for the USB installer because that was the version originally supplied with this iMac, although it had been running Tahoe without any noticeable problems before the kernel panic.
At this point I’m wondering whether I’m dealing with:
● A T2/firmware issue despite DFU Restore completing successfully
● A problem with the internal SSD/NAND
● An APFS/container issue
● A Startup Security/boot policy problem
● Or something else I’ve overlooked
The fact that DFU Restore completes successfully but every method of actually installing macOS fails is what has me stumped.
If anyone has dealt with a similar issue on a 2020 Intel/T2 iMac, I’d really appreciate any suggestions on what to test next.
Thanks!

Windows 10, how long?

Guys

My Rig: 27" 2017, 4.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7, Radeon Pro 580 8gb, 16gb 2400 MHz DDR4, Ventura 13.7.8

I play Steam games on Windows 10 via bootcamp. Everything works really well with no issues. Since W10 is no longer supported the endless updates when logging out are gone which is great. I do not use W10 for anything else, just Steam gaming.

My concern/query is, how long can this continue with no support. I have no idea.

Two Monitors--Can't Keep Windows Open on Second

I have a Mac Mini M4 with two monitors, with the second set up as an extended display.

Once the monitors turn off after a period of non-use, all of the windows on the extended display move to the main monitor, so that when I come back the second monitor just shown a blank desktop.

How can I set things up so that the windows on the extended display remain?

Fit for purpose

I'm looking for an iMac to use to tether my camera for tabletop and small subject photography. My workstation is a Mac mini, where I do all my photo post processing and the iMac would just be for tethered capture. So, I'm looking for something second hand that is not expensive and only needs to be good enough for that purpose.

I've seen this for sale on FB Marketplace and I'm wondering if this is a little too long in the tooth now or if it would still fit my needs, as the system requirements for the software are much less than this.

Buying an iMac Pro in 2026

So for a few weeks now I’ve been looking around on marketplace for iMac Pros and I’m fortunate enough to live in California so we have a lot of options in Silicon Valley and Los Angeles and by a lot I mean 5 to 10 good deals here and there. Bought the 2010 27” inch iMac i3 back when it was new. In 2021 I bought a used 2017 i7 64gb Ram 8gb CPU.

So now I’m looking at iMac Pro’s. Looking at 10c/18c with Vega 64 minimum 64gb ram. It’ll run da Vinci resolve much faster and I also need it to build time lapses from 1000 raw image sequence etc…

We’ve kind of stumbled on the way you could actually use the 2017 iMac to control a new Mac mini using Remote Desktop or Luna to access the Apple silicone mini.

What’s funny about it to me is this solution feels boring. I was really excited about getting an iMac Pro because I’ve always thought they were bad ass and it’s like wow I could buy a 10 or 18 core now for under a grand, that’s insane I gotta get one. And then I find out a new M4 will pretty much blow it out of the water. But, I don’t want that, I want an iMac Pro dammit.

I know it’s a computer and all but I kind of feel like the iMac Pro is like buying a classic car. Yeah the Prius will get you to work with better mileage, but it’s just not as interesting.

Bargain!

On the 2nd of August, I found a Facebook Marketplace listing for an M1 iMac (2021) with the 256gb SSD and an upgraded 16gb of RAM. I have been daily driving a MacBook Neo for a while so the need for the purchase was a risk because I didn’t NEED it.

The kicker was that it has a quite a rough screen defect that is very hard to ignore while using. However, I had a spare monitor laying around already and have set up the iMac behind my desk, mirroring my screen onto my regular monitor. Which means I am essentially using a Mac Mini and I paid £275 for it! What a bargain! It’s being used for Logic Pro X, Final Cut Pro & Affinity Photo Editor!
