About IIIT Guwahati
Professors are really good; they know what they are teaching and guide us through it. With exceptions, of course.
Management here sucks; you will end up getting used to it, as it will become part of your life. About the management, I actually think they are on the lenient side. But don't end up getting caught up in something big, because they make it a big thing from there. Also, there is no closing time for the gates in the hostel, for both girls and boys. But the Campus gate closes at 10 PM at night during regular days, and 10:45 PM during weekends. I don't know about the opening time, though.
College life is dead here. You will not get any good fests here, but 1-2 are kind of okay so far. In the name of fests, you will be getting DJ nights. But you can go to IIT Guwahati to enjoy their fests with your peers.
Academics here are competitive and tiring. You will have classes from Monday to Friday, from 9 to 5, with the exception that Friday is a half-day. But professors here take extra classes too. The crowd here focuses on college exams way too much, and you will have to learn the coding yourself, as there is no coding culture here. You may find yourself some coding buddies to grow together, but that's it. There is this rule of 75% attendance, though, and most professors need that. With some exceptions, which can let you write the exams for 70%. Also, there is some weightage of attendance in the marks.
About the weather, when I first went in August last year, it was raining. And it keeps raining almost the whole year. The scenery here is great as there is a lake, with benches beside it, and you can see mountains with your naked eye.
As for placements, the past years have been tough for the college, as for any other college, due to the recession. But people are saying this year's CSE placement has improved and was good. We are also waiting for the official records. I don't know about the ECE placements, though. The placement cell is made up of professors and students.
For sports, there is a dedicated Badminton court, Table Tennis room, Yoga room, and that's it. You have to bring your own equipment there. Also, there is one playground, where people play football, cricket and such. And this year, the basketball court has also opened. There is only one big sports fest in the whole year, which happens in the month of January.
You will be okay with the mess food. Sometimes you may find insects in your food, but that's common in all colleges. They make decent food and give a special dinner once a month. If you're non-vegetarian, then you will like the menu, as there is non-veg for3-4 days a week.
As for the cost, you can check it on the website. Also, the fees are increasing per year. Make sure you add all semesters/years' fees, and not just multiply the first year's fees by 4. On the approx side, you will get the fees to be 15-16 lakhs. (Including mess and hostel)
Also, the hostels are good. For the first year, if you're a girl, you will get a room with two beds, two tables, chairs and almirah. There will be a common washroom, though, not attached. There is a terrace on the second floor.
For the boys, the same case, or maybe you will end up getting a room with a washroom attached. It depends. There are 4 boys' hostels, one big one, and three small ones.
From the second year, you will be shifted to upper floors, where there will be a bunk bed, an attached washroom, two tables and chairs, and one closed almirah and one open almirah. It will be cramped in there.
Rooms don't have AC, but fans.
There is a library, which functions from 8 AM to 2 AM at night. Also, there is a lab, called Lab 5, which works for the same duration. You can study there. It is fully AC.
There is a canteen which works from 9 AM(or something like that) to 10 PM(I guess). And then also, there is a night cafe near the boys' hostel, where you can eat food at midnight.
There is an airport nearby(5-8 km away), and two stations, Kamakhya(20 km) and Guwahati(25 km). The college is not in the main city. You may visit the main city, using local transport, cabs or may rent a scooty by showing them your driving license. There is one rental shop just off the college campus.
