I'm 18yo, would be joining IISER this year probably. I am very passionate to go into the armed forces (army specifically) although as we know that getting selected through NDA or CDS is very challenging and now everyone makes it, nor is there any straight path to do so. Right now for college I have 2 options basically, engineering colleges (RVCE, MSRIT, etc) and IISERS, im making decision between these two on the basis of interest purely, as what would I like to do in my civilian life if I don't get selected, that'd definitely be into research field. Although if I select IISERS, I'd practically be killing my army route.

I'm 18 now when I'll be joining college, I have 2 more NDA attempts with me that I'd give in 1st year of my college. But here's where the problem starts, I can only apply for CDS in the final year of degree or after graduation. The BSMS degree is too long, by the time i'd be in my 4th year, I'd already be 22, and most people are involved in master's thesis project in their 4th year, sometimes people even go abroad for that. I'd graduate at 23 and the maximum age for IMA application is 24, so I'd have 1 or 2 attempts at most that too considering I go for PhD elsewhere as most people tend to do.

It's quite a dilemma, I have to chose between 2 things, if I leave IISERS for army route and I don't get selected, that be very disheartening as I would've left a college and career path for nothing and vice versa. I don't know if there's any way around it, it's not an easy decision to take, especially at my age. I can't take a BSc degree at the end of 3rd year without having to leave college as far as I have searched.

If someone can help me with this decision or been in my shoes, please I would like for your advice.

I am just confused for the preference of kolkata mohali and bhopal. In a general preference list kolkata is above mohali and bhopal and also food is good. However Mohali is near to my hometown as I live in Haryana and I have heard that iiser mohali facilities including hostel rooms etc are better than that Kolkata. Everyone is saying make your preference list according to subjects you gonna take but individual preferences can change over time and I don't thing it's a thing to consider at bsms level. I am also confused between Mohali and bhopal and bhopal and kolkata. Seeking advice from seniors if possible.

How many students share a room in IISER Pune as per as study year, and also for PHD students ?

i heard that there is a bit of hate towards south indians in iiser kolkata and that there is prefernce towards bengali people there and i am getting different answers from differing sources so pls help

Hello seniors, I had some doubts regarding IISER Bhopal and Kolkata and maybe some of them have already been answered for which I apologise if I ask them again.

1. What's the scene of Ragging in either of the IISERs. (On paper every college is anti-ragging blah blah, but actually what goes on there?)

2. Since we'll be taught all the core subjects in the first two years, after that can someone from a biology major choose data science as a minor, to kind of orient themselves towards bioinformatics/biostatistics etcetc.

3. When do the classes start, like will the ones allotted in R1 and R2 get to start classes and others join them as the counseling proceeds or the counseling ends and everyone starts at the same time?

4. I've seen the curriculum of BSMS from the Iiserb website but I am unable to find a more comprehensive syllabus for the first year. Which books do we use, where do we purchase them from? Can we borrow them from the library? Are Laptops allowed in classes?

5. What documents would be needed at the time of reporting to the college?

My priority was bhopal but I saw some post saying the city is dogshit and all so plzz tell how both these cities are ? Are they unsafe for women, are people uncivilized and uncultured?

And which college is better for math major and cs minor bhopal and mohali ?

I just want to ask After joining IISER and spending time there were you happy with your decision or regretting it because you know that after 5 years you have to do PhD either abroad or in india and getting both are not that easy So having a decent financial support must be a debate for you till now, what are your plans in future After IISER if you came from a middle class family

I will be completing my masters by summer 2027.

My current research interest & experience lies in the area of semiconductor electronics/optoelectronics materials.

I want to do a PhD from abroad, preferably US, but want to gain more research experience before applying by doing projects, assist, learn, contribute and publish under a researcher/professor.

Do Japanese/Taiwanese or European profs take passed-out students as Research Assistant for long-term projects for a year or so?

If anybody has any knowledge or experience of something like this, please share here. It would mean a lot to me.

Is it possible to start MS in a new major (let say biology) in another subject after completing BSMS with a subject (let say physics) major? If possible than how ? and What are criteria ?

Should I go the conventional route and select IISER Pune as my first priority (I will most probably get it) or consider some other IISER? I want to pursue theoretical physics in the future. This doubt arose because I have seen many times that IISER K has a better physics department.

If there are any students of IISER Pune here, can you tell me about the mess charges ? Like how much do you spend on the mess food per month ? It would be really helpful.... Thank you so much....

Should I keep MOHALI & TVM higher on the preference list( where I would prefer to live for the next 5 years) or KOLKATA(which is said to be “better” among these)

If someone really want to get a job through iiser is it a good option?

According to new fee structure of 26 autumn batch shows 72k-73k which is considerable but after this we also have 16k-18k on food bills which makes the total of 88k-91k total semester fee that is way too much don't get offended but like isn't this a government institute why do I have to pay for the salary of mess staff a whooping 7k per semester.

Lastly is this 16k-18k figure correct is there any hope for me
