Coalfalls clay survivors - my husband fought our 1,200m2 block for two years. Built a free lawn tracking app out of frustration. Posting because locals might find it useful.

We're on one of the older Queenslanders up in Coalfalls with a full 1,200m2 block. Posting because my husband isn't on Reddit and I figure locals on the same clay might get something out of this.

What happened to our lawn:

Curl grubs ate the root system. He treated with Acelepryn and the grubs died. But then he put Barricade pre-emergent down on the recovering lawn, not realising it stops every runner from establishing new roots. Killed his own recovery. $3k+ lesson.

We ripped the front yard out early 2025. Full soil prep on Coalfalls clay:

- pH test: 5.5-6.5 (typical for here)

- Gypsum at 200-500g per m2 to break clay aggregation

- Dolomite to raise pH and add magnesium

- Volcamine Zeolite at 1-2kg per m2 (permanent nutrient retention)

- LawnPride Under Turf Starter

Laid Sir Walter Buffalo DNA Certified. Cyclone Alfred hit three days later. It survived. Front verge is thriving now.

Why I'm posting here specifically:

My husband is a medically retired vet and his notes about what he applied were scattered everywhere. Different apps, notebooks, bags in the shed. He has cognitive decline from service so tracking this stuff across multiple places is genuinely hard. He started building a little app for himself to keep it all in one place.

I turned it into a real product. It's called LawnSuite, it's free, and you can use it right now in your phone browser without installing anything:

app.lawnsuite.com.au

lawnsuite.com.au

It's got 111 Australian products with real label rates, dosage calculator for your lawn area, BOM weather, treatment logging. Built for Australian conditions, not a US app with metric conversion.

Backyard is still dirt. Waiting on Stampede Buffalo to come out for the shaded 632m2 out the back.

Anyone else fighting Coalfalls clay? Would be good to know what's worked for people locally. Also happy to pass on anything my husband learnt the hard way if it saves someone the same mistakes.

Hairdresser

Hi, I'm looking for a hairdresser who could sit down and have a consultation with me (and possibly fix it asap) about the hair that I got done today from another hairdresser. I've come home and noticed there's bleach damage and now I'm just questioning the whole lot and would just prefer to go see another professional about this rather than go back. If anyone could help please reach out. Thank you 🙏🏻😊

Gundam movie scene at Ipswich Railway Museum

Not great quality but was cool seeing it happen in person, even from a distance!

Riverlink Restaurants

Does anyone know what the go is with all the closed restaurants at Riverlink? I went in with my daughter last weekend around 11:30 and at least 3 were closed and did not look like they were opening anytime soon. Nandos, Montezumas and Jae Bul Korean were the ones I noticed. Will they be reopening?

Edit: To clarify, I went the weekend before the one just gone.

Mice

Hey Ippy team

Was wondering if anyone in the area is experiencing mice in their home lately? It's never been a problem until now.

Have tried mouse traps with peanut butter smeared on the tab and a cluster of cereal on the peanut butter.

The little guys have managed to lick the tab clean! Any successful suggestions and techniques?

New here. Looking for advice on meeting people and dating

As a black/brown guy new to ipswich/brisbane, I am curious what the dating and social scene is like here. Do locals tend to date outside their race much? People seem friendly but it’s hard to tell how easy it is to meet and connect with others socially or for dating. I would also appreciate any recommendations on good places or social events where people go to meet others and make friends/date. Just keen to understand how things work here :)

Haig St Quarry

Haig St Quarry is located in Brassall. Walking the bearded dragon and Willy wagtail trail it comes out at just over 2km, it is dog friendly and has a small elevation climb.

Loud Alarm like sound in Rosewood

Hi everyone,

I feel like I'm almost gaslighting myself hah but did anyone else hear an insanely loud alarm sound around midnight??

I woke up to such a deafening sound.

Sorta reminded me a cross between a fire alarm and those pull a part/self defence security things. Just looked around the house and everything seems normal. I have never heard anything so loud and intense before. Honestly a little shaken

Looking for people to chat with

Anyone here is up for a chat, I am feeling pretty bored/lonely. Happy to talk about pretty much anything like games, music, life, random nonsense, whatever. If anyone else is feeling the same, feel free to comment or dm🙂

Pubs

Picture this: you have the opportunity to purchase and run one of Ipswich’s CBDs fine heritage pubs, (immediate use or reno) and become a publican.

Which are you choosing any why:

• City View Hotel
• Federal Hotel (Squealing Pig)
• Hotel Metropole
• Prince of Wales
• Hotel Commonwealth
• Ulster Hotel (Memories of India)

I would choose Federal or Ulster, maybe City View.

Skateboarders/BMX/MTB/Scootie folks keen for some free photos to help me build my portfolio out?

Hi fellow Ipswichians,

I'm hoping to find some folks that want some action shots of themselves Skating/riding/Scooting to build out my portfolio in that direction.

You'd get high res-versions of any photos and be able to use them for whatever you'd like for free, I don't want any money, just want to build my portfolio up and hopefully showcase some locals hurling themselves through the air in spectacular fashion while I'm at it.

I've been a photographer for a bit, I'm looking at moving into a bit more of an "Action Sport" direction. My work has been mostly Motorsport events/Cars/Music which I love, but there are some awesome photographic challenges in action sports I'm wanting to master.

So, if you can fling yourself off ramps, rails or stairs and what some cool photos of yourself doing so, please hit me up here or DM me on insta and we can schedule something from there

You can see my work on insta - https://www.instagram.com/looks_good_thanks

Cheers!

Are kids losing interest in music lessons quicker these days?

Hey — I’m based in Ipswich and moved here about a year ago, really enjoying it so far.
I’m a professional musician and have been teaching for 20+ years across schools, private lessons and different settings. Recently I’ve had a few local families reach out asking if I’d take their kids on again for music lessons.

A common theme I’ve noticed is that a lot of kids seem to lose interest pretty quickly if the learning style doesn’t suit them, even if they were keen at the start.

Just curious — is that something other parents here have experienced?

Also wondering how people feel about private music lessons in general at the moment.
I’ve opened up a few afternoon/evening spots locally, but just trying to get a sense of what people are seeing.

Thanks 🙏🏼

Personalised planners based on your psychology

I have a degree in psychology and had an idea to advertise personalised planners based off of a survey you fill out that helps me gain insight to your psychology and what types of sections/layouts would be best suited to you.

What would you pay for something like this?

Obviously I want to be making a profit also, but printing these from what I can tell is not cheap unless I go black and white.

I will be advertising mainly on Ipswich fb pages and marketplace to sell these, so definitely local.
