Bodysuit Appreciation: Horikazu

Entry 13: Where Direction Matters
Artist: Horikazu
Theme: Rochishin and Dragons
Source: Japanese Tattoo Arts: Horikazu

I kept wanting to say this Horikazu suit works because of diagonals. On the back, red lightning cuts across the shoulder bands, the weapon angles through them and then the snake turns another way. The front gives us two dragons dropping down the torso while the background bars move across them. Here I was thinking I had a neat little rule that crossing directions separate things.

Then I looked again and the dragon scales ruined that. See, the scales are packed with small intersecting lines, but they still read as one body. So I tried tracing the suit in layers. First I traced only the background directions. Then I traced only the dragons’ main body directions. Those two maps stay distinct. But when I traced the scales alone, they turned into a cross-hatched fence. Then I deleted it and traced the dragon’s outer contour and main axis again, and one large form snaped back into place.

Maybe direction alone does not group or separate forms by itself. A crossing seems to matter more when it happens between two already-readable systems. Inside one larger system, the same kind of crossing can get absorbed into pattern or texture. That may be part of how this suit stays crowded without turning into one busy block.

Larger systems remain easy to tell apart even while the smaller marks inside them stay busy. But, hey. We are allowed to make a hypothesis, get dunked on by a dragon scale, and come back with a better question, right?

Here’s the takeaway. If you trace the background first, then the main subjects, where do the directions agree and where do they push against each other? Now trace the scales, then the dragon’s outside shape. At what level does the crossing start to matter, and when does it simply become part of the texture?

Update on cobra/peony front and sides by Kristjan Olson at Remington Tattoo

We are done with my sides for now. He added new orchids and violets to tie in with the existing ones I had. I still have a little to fill in on the side-boob area, but that’s going to have to wait. The sides have been ROUGH and I’m ready to move on to my other arm. 😂
Artist is Kristjan Olson at Remington Tattoo in San Diego.

Update on Genshogo Suit

Tattooer: Matthew Crim, Crimson Tattoo, KC

Been a while since I’ve posted an update. I made the pilgrimage to Buscalan, Kalinga, Philippines to be tattooed by the legendary Apo Whang-Od. I got Matthew’s permission to allow her to tattoo her signature inside the senjafuda, next to where he will sign at the completion of the tattoo.

Besides that, are updates on the right thigh. We also have the stomach outlined, no direct pictures, but you can roughly see in the first picture.

Munewari and back piece with existing leg tattoos

Hey! I'm building and planning with my artist my munewari with a back piece. The back piece i have chosen extends down my butt and upper leg. The munewari will also follow that line just for continuity. I have existing medium-large tattoos already on my front lower thighs, one is about half of my thigh and the other is about 3/4 of the thigh. Would the space between or overlapping the body suit and existing tattoos be awkward or just incorporate them into the body suit? They're bold American traditional. I haven't been able to see any examples of similar layouts. Does anyone here have that or insight?

Need honest opinion on koi

Does the koi look too small? It originally was supposed to be like an inch longer but I asked my artist to shorten it so it doesn’t stick out when I wear long sleeves.
