Bembridge’s Living Stronghold: A Fascinating Isle of Wight History Guide

Perched dramatically atop Bembridge Down on the eastern edge of the Isle of Wight, Bembridge Fort stands as a monument to 19th-century military ingenuity and national defense. Overlooking the sea with sweeping views of Sandown Bay, the fort is an enduring symbol of Britain’s Victorian-era response to foreign threats—built not in direct reaction to war, but from the anxiety of one. Today, its silent walls echo the voices of soldiers, engineers, and now, conservationists, as its legacy shifts from martial utility to heritage preservation.

Relocation advice!

Hi there! My partner and I are planning to buy a house and move over to the island next year. We would like some advice please from people who have done this too!

We both work in a big supermarket chain, so we would hopefully be able to transfer jobs, if there are vacancies available. We are just both wondering how do people make the move? Luckily we do have friends we could stay with over there for a short time.

Do you find a house first, buy it then look for jobs whilst still in your old jobs and move over one at a time when weve each found a job? Or both find jobs first, stay with friends on the island and then look for a house once we have jobs? But that could mean staying with friends for a long time which we would like to avoid if possible.

Ideally we don't want to move over at separate times from eachother but we realise that may have to happen.

We would be so grateful for any advice as we both don't really have an idea how to do this!! Thankyou!

Edit; currently live with parents in West Sussex

I've just been touching up the Middle Earth style fantasy map of the Isle of Wight I made a while ago. Thanks again to all those who contributed back then!

As if this was four years ago now. It's still one of my favourite maps so far (island maps always look cool depicted like this).

I've just been doing some tidying up jobs on it and making some of the text more legible. Again, thanks to all the commenters who suggested ideas and really helped bring this to life. I've just had a fresh batch made up here for anyone interested in one.

Best men’s barber in Newport.

Hi everyone,
I recently moved to the island and I’m looking for recommendations for a really good men’s barber in Newport (or nearby).

I’ve tried a few Turkish barbers at the town since moving here, but unfortunately they haven’t really suited me. The cuts have been a bit rushed and they’ve ended up messing up my hairstyle, so I’m looking for someone who takes their time and is good with modern men’s cuts.

Any recommendations would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance! 😊

Does anyone know anything about 'Wightian'?

From the Omniglot website, i was browsing it for fun and was shocked when this came up. Does anyone know anything else about this language, opinions?

Lost air pod please help (east Cowes)

Girlfriend lost an air pod while on holiday. It should be white on the side of the road. If anyone could find it and get in contact you would be a fucking legend. She was pulled up at the side of the road in the parking spot.

Please if anyone is local and spare a few mins to have a mooch, you would be doing us a big favour.

Wheelchair/accessibility

Hello, I’m looking for any wheelchair users or people close to one who understand the limitations with access day to day living etc with experience of the island? Are there certain areas that have accessible shops etc or just more accessible than others. I appreciate many of the high streets have old listed buildings. Do any shops have temp ramps they get out on request? Are people helpful & friendly? Is there a specific area you find more accessible & able to function better for the day to day things. Beaches, paths, ferries, restaurants too etc. If you were moving to the Island today would you choose one area over the other?

Creative groups (filming)

Hi everyone, I’ve moved recently to the island (28m/videographer/editor) and I’m looking for creative groups to engage with. People who are into (filmmaking, videography, long form Youtube content, movie clubs, professional photography, etc…)

I’m happy to collaborate with anyone who’s working on a passion project and see how I can help.

I know it’s a bit vague what I’m looking for but really anything could be helpful/fun

(I’ve seen lots of nature photography walking groups but I’m not exactly into that)

(Redirecting me to where to look at would be helpful as well)

Thank you so much 🫶

Don’t suppose anyone has found any car keys that belong to an MG, likely lost between, Roland’s fields havenstreet (some refer it as sheep dog fields).

Was lost last around 7th june,

I know this is longshot and ive left it a bit late to do this, but i have another key so I have been using that and not really cared up til now. Someone said to try reddit as someone recently found a missing EarPod, so wanted to try my luck, many thanks!
