Any recommendations for a non-faith based AA group in KW?

A friend of mine needs help and finally attended an AA meeting after a lot of persuasion. She absolutely did not click with the group because it was extremely faith-based.

Does anyone have any suggestions for any groups that aren’t faith-based?

Thanks.

Looking for historical info on this part of Bridgeport

I am specifically interested in knowing what was on the land to the west of what is now Shirk Place - adjacent to Bechtel Park and the naturalized area.

I can see on archival maps that the entire area was once the mill pond, but the area has such an extreme drop between the stream to the south and the scrub land that touches on Becthel to the north that I can't understand how that could allow for a pond, even given sedimentation over the years. Next, that scrub area has ridges and shapes in the land that suggest maybe once a large building was there? And if you follow the path heading west and then north, there is a drop into a lower plain and there are huge concrete rocks that look like a foundation. The entire thing looks like abandoned and ruined industry but I'm not finding any info in a general online search. So maybe some folks here have info from their own memories.

Edit: looking at the present map again I'm wondering if the pond was on the south side of the stream, below the elevation, filling that low lying area between parking lots and housing.

Power outage around 7 am on weekends and some weekdays. Only in the summer. Lasts only 30 seconds but happens often. Does anyone else experience this?

Is this normal for Kitchener-Waterloo area or just me? Enova is the provider. I asked them and they told me a squirrel got caught in the power lines. Can't imagine a squirrel getting caught in the lines so regularly LOL.

I'm assuming it's due to an overload on the electricity grid when the ACs turn on in the morning.

Anyone wants to join a regular Tuesday evening board games hangout? (beginner-friendly)

WFH human here, tired of staring at the same four walls, so I'm thinking of putting together a weekly Tuesday evening board game hangout at Games on Tap (open to other venue suggestions, that's just the one I've played at before).

No experience needed, but ideally you can make it most weeks. Hoping this turns into a regular thing, not a one-off.

I'm a beginner myself. The vibe is casual games and friendly humans, not competitive play. Experienced folks welcome too if you're patient and like teaching.

Drop a comment or DM me and I'll set up the first one. 🎲

Anyone knows why pioneer gas prices are hitting roof like never before?

I used to get my gas filled at pioneer for the sole reason of getting Journie points and cheapest fuel cost but I have noticed recently that tge gas at pioneer is consistently being priced the highest compared to others.

Croissants Along the Iron Horse Trail & Laurel Trail KW

(Follow-up to my Original Post)

Please check out my last post for the other croissants I tried along the Iron Horse Trail (City Cafe, Bauer Bakery, Vincenzos, Roux Bakehouse, La Patisserie)

Thanks to everyone who made comments and suggestions on my last post! I had no idea the post would be so popular, but I am so glad that many people found it helpful. I started this mainly because there are so many options for baked goods on Google, but it can be hard to find updated prices and photos for each bakery without scrolling extensively.

Luckily the weather was cooling off after this sweltering week, so I decided to do another lengthy walk to try out all of the recommendations from last time!

All prices include taxes (if added).

--

Nova Era Bakery - $2.99 - massive size, sweeter than most croissants (brioche-like taste), less buttery, softer exterior, bready interior, least expensive (Kitchener)

Golden Hearth Bakery - $3.50 - smallest size, strong buttery flavour, very flakey and crispy exterior with a chewy center, mid-range pricing (Kitchener)

Maison KooKoo - $5.59 - most expensive option out of all the croissants, medium sized, rich buttery flavour (they advertised imported butter), aesthetically pleasing exterior with perfect stripes and flakiness (Waterloo)

Manon Bakery - $3.73 - also massive size, similar to Nova Era in appearance but not sweetness, and bread like taste, less butter flavour noticed, crispy exterior with some flakiness, mid-range pricing (Waterloo)

--

Places that did not have butter croissants available:

Aura La Pastry & Provisions - $5.00 - Kouign-amann

Aura La unfortunately did not have any butter croissants (apparently they used to) so I could not buy one to compare. They did have a kouign-amann which was recommended as one of their most popular pastries. (Kitchener)

Lucero Canteen (Terroir Bakery) - $4.40 - Raspberry Croissant

Many mentioned Lucero for the Terroir Bakery (Cambridge) dough they bring in that is then baked there. I however learned upon arrival that Lucero has a rotating selection of pastries each day so the regular butter croissant was not available. I did buy a raspberry croissant that looked lovely to try. It was good, but I would have preferred the butter croissant to compare! I'll have to return for another visit at a different time to try the butter croissant. (Kitchener)

--

- Maison KooKoo and Golden Hearth stand out for their full buttery taste. Golden Hearth wins for the price point but Maison's butter was definitely richer and more unique if you want to splurge on butter quality.

- Nova Era and Manon looked very similar at first glance (I almost mixed up the two!), but Nova's is a sweeter croissant while Manon's was more plain. Both had less buttery flavour when compared to the other two.

- Lucero Canteen had a limited selection and unfortunately the butter croissants are not always available.

- Aura La unfortunately does not have croissants but very friendly staff and many tasty pastries!

-Higher price ranges either contribute to croissant size or butter quality or both.

--

I will admit this route was much longer and less easy to pick up all the croissants, but overall the Laurel and Iron Horse Trail both have lots of options for a range of local croissants.

Again, hopefully this post is helpful for anyone comparing price and croissant types available. Please try to support local businesses when possible. There are lots of bakeries available within walking distance of our lovely trails and downtown and uptown areas!

Looking to rent a dumpster Bin for a week, to haul away yard waste and some household items.

Recommendations for local firms appreciated. And, flip side, any you recommend we avoid.

TIA.

Crafty Ramen Closed?

I called in to order a Tokyo Salaryman a couple of weeks ago and the staff on the phone told me they were closed "early" that night and hung up.

Yesterday I drove by and saw the windows were all papered up, sign was gone, and no note on the door.

Does anyone know what happened? And can anyone recommend the next best ramen in kw? Thank you!

Auto insurance broker recommendations? Mine dropped the ball on my policy- badly.

I’m looking for some insurance broker recommendations.

A bit about me:

  • I’m a young driver.
  • This is my first vehicle.
  • I’m the only driver on the policy.

I’m currently insured with Aviva through Regal Insurance. I actually like Aviva and have no issues with the insurance company itself; my frustration is with my broker.

I recently found out I was never offered accident forgiveness as an option, and I also discovered my policy doesn’t include rental vehicle coverage even though the original paperwork indicated that it would. Overall, I feel like my policy wasn’t reviewed thoroughly and that important coverage options weren’t explained to me.

So I’m wondering:

  • Is there a broker/agent at Regal Insurance that you’d highly recommend?
  • If you think I should switch brokerages altogether, which brokerage do you recommend, and is there a specific broker/agent there that you’ve had a great experience with?

I’m looking for someone knowledgeable, responsive, and who actually takes the time to explain all of my coverage options rather than just setting up the policy.

I’d really appreciate any recommendations or personal experiences. TIA!

Where to buy Playboy?

Does anyone know where to get the current issue of Playboy? A band I like is featured. I went to Indigo in Conestoga and they didn't have it. I also called around a few local places that didn't stock it or have the availability to order it. Do people even buy Playboy anymore?

So yeah uh, for the articles.

Slow air leak in back tire. Canadian Tire says I need all 4 tires replaced

Hi everyone,
I have a slow air leak in one of my back tires. I took it to Canadian Tire and they said the puncture is in the shoulder of the tire, so it can’t be repaired. They also told me I should replace all 4 tires.
Does anyone know a reliable used tire shop where I can buy one matching tire, or maybe a more affordable set? I’m also open to any advice

Thieves on Westwood

Watch out for these guys. The guy sitting down was rummaging through his bag for a long time whilst the other guy played lookout. They don't live in the neighborhood. They sound Russian. They also really weren't happy when I took their picture. On their bikes in a heavy construction zone after dark

Request to VP Parkrunners

Please try maintaining some semblance of trail discipline. You're not entitled to the entire width of the path. There are people out for just a normal stroll who shouldn't have to scramble offtrail to avoid being run over.

HVAC/plumber

Just checking to see if anyone has recommendation of plumber/HVAC who can do rough in for toilet and move a washer and gas dryer and rejig the gas line and venting for the dryer. The trick would be the washer and dryer need to be stacked so two people need to be there for that part.
