Komoot saved my life in 2023

I was hiking the mountains around "Parco dell'Antola" in Italy (Liguria) when I decided to go for a special route. You can check on the map: if starting from "Casa del Romano" you go all the way up you can reach "Monte Carmo" where three italian regions cross in a TRIPLE border. I arrived there... but it wasn't enough!

Was in that moment that I decided to save the route on Koomot in order to feel safe while hiking all alone in what was already afternoon: I decided to walk up to the other triple border, because going north one could surpass Liguria (and the border with Piemonte and Emilia-Romagna) and reach the border with Lombardia.

Lemme tell you.. that was a bad choice.

I found myself basically lost at 7pm while trying to go back to Liguria, desperately trying to find some kind of sign to return back on the route. I also encountered some cows, bulls and horses and injured multiple times my legs.

And here's where Komoot kicks in.

I remembered that I had downloaded the whole route and immediately thanks to the app I understood where I was and what path I should take (crossing the forest) to reach again the main road.

Probably I would have survived even without it, but a full night in those trees would have been at least inevitable.

THANKS KOMOOT!

Very slow route planner on desktop

The komoot route planner is excessively slow on desktop.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Login with user account
  2. In top navigation click "New" , then "Plan New Route"
  3. Optional: Open Network tab, see requests returning 504
  4. Wait - UI elements will not load, map loads only partially
Expected Result: Map and all UI elements load and tour can be planned
Actual Result: Map partially loads, UI elements do not load, CORS errors, and 504 on certain requests.

Testsed on: macOs 26.4 (25E246) / Vivaldi 7.9.3970.60 / Brave 1.89.145

Dear Komoot Team, you are doing a great job, but issues like this are not acceptable in prod.
Especially when pushing more and more Ads 😉

Multi Day Trip Planning

Ok, I’ve just upgraded to a paid sub so I can use multi-day trip planning. I’ve got a 3 month trip coming up, and I’m cycling for around 90 days. Two instant questions/ issues:

  1. Max number of nights seems to be 70 with no way to change this? Or am I daft? Quite pointless restriction imo 🤷‍♂️

  2. The app automatically breaks my 4000km trip into chunks based on the days I tell it I am alloying. So it’s created 70 short days. Not all of these are very well designed, so I edit them. As I extend the days it doesn’t change the following day…so eventually the planned days are getting stupidly short, and will eventually overlap. But I can’t see any way to just delete a day?

komoot premium on garmin watches - convenient and reliable?

Hi, I want to switch from an Apple Watch to a Garmin watch. I like to use navigation on my Apple Watch - you just start a route in Apple Maps, and the AW automatically displays it on the screen.

I realize in advance that Garmin watches won’t be that simple. And besides, I want to buy a Forerunner 570, which doesn't have maps.

But I've read that Komoot Premium allows you to view detailed maps on Garmins that don't have built-in maps.

Before I buy it, could someone please explain how it works, whether it’s reliable, and how many steps are involved? For example, if I’m in an unfamiliar city and need to plan a route to a hotel from my iPhone, what would that process look like? I’ve never used Komoot, especially in combo with Garmin watches.

I’d definitely like to buy a Garmin Fenix 8 with maps, but they cost almost twice.

The next level: Annoying outdoor clothing advertisements within Komoot tour data

Quite a few things are currently going wrong at Komoot.
As an owner of the "World Map", I am not only being bombarded with ads for Komoot Premium, but I am now also seeing advertisements from "Bergzeit" — a retailer of outdoor clothing and equipment.
It is simply annoying.

«Routes» button

Let’s say I want to plan a ride and click the routes button. Why does Komoot show some random routes done by other people, but not my routes? I find it really hard to find my Saved routes? Why are they buried under my profile icon?

I do not really care about routes created by other members to be honest…

Komoot vs Garmin Connect - krasser Unterschied

Is das normal?

Some missing features

On android app, there is no possibility to see on past activies the history of speed, it's only available on browser.

On browser, when viewing a past activity (url like https://www.komoot.com/tour/123456/zoom ) There is no button to hide the traject. On android however there is the eye button.

On the same page on browser, there is the history of elevation, but not speed. On android it's also not shown.

There is also not the possibility to choose the different type of info : surface type/temperature/etc, which is available on urls like https://www.komoot.com/tour/123/edit

edit: also on android, during a tour, i see "moving time", but there is no way to see "elapsed time"

Question, how to avoid a point when calculating the route?

I was looking for a cool GPS app for when I take the bike, and I'm amazed with all the features and details that Komoot has.

But when trying to plan a route from my future home and work, it sends me to a dangerous tunnel I want to avoid.

Then on the cameback it sends me through a quite tall stairs because those are not registered on the app as stairs but as "singletrack" instead.

Going to any of those two points with the bike is a suicide.

I can add waypoints to try move it to another path but the app will try sending me there again because "its the most optimal".

Is there a way to add a "can't go there" point?

Updates to route won’t sync to other devices

I’ve been planning a cross-Europe 4000km bike ride for charity, and working on the route for weeks. Last night I made some major changes on my PC - took me several hours.

This morning I look at my iPhone and the route is unchanged - my massive changes are not there. Same on my iPad. Same account logged in on all, of course.

*Weirdly, looks like the distance and elevation shown ARE from my updated route* 🤷‍♂️

Logged out and logged in again, no change. It’s been 12 hours since I made the amendments so plenty of time to sync.

I was literally going to pay for premium today, but if this is going to be an issue it will ruin my entire planning process, and I’m not willing to pay and hope for the best…

I leave in two weeks for 2 months on the road…at which point I will no longer have my laptop with me.

Help 😅

What happened to showing all the waypoints?

Hi Komoot, wondering why the upcoming waypoints feature has been pared down? On the old navigation screen you could tap and see all upcoming waypoints and all the highlights would be named as well. Now in the new menu, only upcoming highlights are shown and they aren't even named. Plus with the voice-over navigation, it would tell you when you arrived at a waypoint and that's gone now as well. Will these features come back at any point?

I often use generic waypoints to mark POIs without highlights, or places I might want to stop. It was so useful to see the remaining distance and to hear that on the voice-over too!

Also the symbol inidicating no internet connection is annoying too. I use offline maps no need for a connection. Can this be swiped away somehow as it takes up valuable space (especially if, like me, you have a small screen phone!)

[Biking] How do I prevent being routed over mountainbiketrails?

I've been routed over trails that are mountainbikeroutes multiple times. I navigate with the "sport" setting set on biking (not om moutainbiking).

These trails are narrow, steep but short hills, sandy, and absolutely not suitable for 'normal' (city) bikes. I do not want to be routed over them, ever.

There is no option for it in settings on the Android app. If I look at that trail in the app the road type says: single track and the underground says: unpaved.

How can I avoid or even disable being routed over these?

Edit to add: in the map it shows as a thick green line, just like any other bicycle path, or thin black line.

No follow-up after reporting an error in navigation.

A few weeks ago I reported an error in navigation where I'm getting routed over a steep sandy pedestrian incline/decline while navigation is set to biking. In the map it shows as a thin black line.

Nothing happened with the report, I'm still getting routed over it.

Should I make more reports? It is not possible to edit the map by yourself, right?

^(This post is not related to the other post i just made about mountainbike trails.)

How do I report a dangerous dog on a route?

Hi everyone,

I just did a hike on Komoot and encountered a really aggressive dog that scared the shit out of me and even followed me for a bit. This was mainly due to the fact, that the path shown was going through or near a private property. How do I report this or warn others who want to do the hike? (There is no alternative path there, the only thing to do is try your best to get through a thick forresty area.

Customer Service

Komoot,
I think you guys are working harder than any app to improve, so I look forward to what you come up with.
However, have you emailed your own customer service? The AI bot is a dimwit, and conversing with it is very frustrating. I know the intent behind it, but it truly sucks.

Color of highlights selected as waypoints

In the past, highlights added as waypoints were displayed in a different color.
That was very good, but unfortunately, it hasn't been the case for quite some time now. They now have the same orange color as all other highlights. Especially in areas with many highlights, this makes it very difficult to identify and locate these specific waypoints, both in route planning and navigation.
It would be great if they were displayed in a distinct color again, perhaps simply a slightly darker shade of orange.

Collections almost unusable - overview and usability is lost

I posted the following on the komoot website on "Support" more than two months ago. I received a standard response (AI-generated?), but absolutely nothing happened after that.
So, I’m trying my luck here now, hoping that someone will listen.
Surely I can't be the only one complaining about this.

The new sorting and filtering options for collections are quite nice.
But what helpful are they to me if the redesign of collections has destroyed the display layout of collections so that they are almost unusable now?

1 - In the collections overview, the titles are cut off.
Please bring back multi-line titles, as it was before, and the way it still is in other lists within komoot.

2 - It gets even worse when I open a collection.
The list of tours is so bloated with huge images that any sense of overview is completely lost. Even on a 32-inch screen in a maximized browser window, I'm not able to see more than two tours at a time. Zooming out via the browser doesn't help either, as the text then becomes illegible.

When I look at other users' collections, those huge images, randomly compiled from hundreds of photos, might perhaps be somewhat helpful or "inspiring". In my *own* collections, they cause the exact opposite.

To choose a specific day trip from a collection containing many of such trips, or to get an overview within a collection covering a long distance tour splitted to daily trips with different variations, a compact overview displaying key information and details (such as distance, duration, and elevation gain) is essential.

Currently, I find myself having regular fits of rage whenever I open one of my collections.
Collections are a feature I pay for with my premium account. Therefore, I'd like to be able to use them. Currently, I don't use them at all anymore.

So pleeeeease, it would be fantastic if you could improve the display layout.
Ideally, a simple list format - similar to the views for saved, planned, or completed tours - would be best.
However, if you absolutely *have to* include images, please ensure they are of a reasonable size - meaning: small. Everything worked perfectly fine before the redesign.
The optimal solution would be to offer a user-selectable display mode, though I naturally understand that this might be a complex undertaking and perhaps asking too much.

Battery and Performance Test - AWU3 with Komoot vs Suunto Vertical 2

I have seen a lot of updates on the Komoot app recently. I saw one of their latest included notes about improved battery life for the Apple Watch while using the map. So I decided to give it a test. I went on a two hour hike and wore my AWU3 and a Suunto Vertical 2. I just have a couple of observations that may interest some of you.

First, a huge problem my encountered. The start of my hike was in a location that did not have cell service. The Komoot app on my phone nor on my watch Wood open to load the route because I did not have cell coverage. However, I downloaded off-line maps on both of the devices. That is a huge oversight. That needs to be addressed immediately. I ended up just tracking a manual activity without loading any route to get it to work.

As far as battery use, here are the results:

AWU3
Hour 1 (Map screen open) - 11% battery used
Hour 2 (Data screen open) - 10% battery used
So it would appear that keeping your watch on the map screen or the data screen has only a 1% difference of battery life per hour.

Suunto Vertical 2
Hour 1 (Map screen open) - 5% battery used
Hour 2 (Data screen open) - 1% battery used
There is a much bigger difference between using the map screen and the data screen on this watch. If you’re someone that you know will always use the map screen, the Suunto Vertical 2 is about twice as efficient. However, if you don’t keep your watch on that screen, 1% per hour was an amazing result.

Map view for Wear OS

Is there any idea if or when map view for Wear OS will be released? I used to use Tizen and it was great! Now I am on Wear OS and it is working "okayish" with a workaround. However Wear OS by default has dark maps and that sucks!
