Komoot's route planning issues are due to bad map data, not algorithms

Disclaimer: I'm just an avid user of Komoot for years with no experience in software engineering or licensing agreements.

Hello everybody,

I think most of us have been komooted before and it's been a meme for years now, but the issue aren't their algorithms, but wrong data in OSM.

You're probably aware that Komoot and a lot of other outdoor navigation apps use Open Street Maps as their mapping data and then add routing algorithms and other features. I don't want to open up another discussion on the morality of companies using open source data for their profit, we've had plenty of those before.

For my current bikepacking trip through the Balkans I've tinkered around with different riding styles and preferences. In the end I've settled with the road bike profile and the "calm" (is it called like that in English? In German it's "ruhig") preference. On paper this the perfect algorithm for my preferred style of riding. It keeps you away from main roads if possible and prioritieses low traffic rural roads instead.

But the best algorithm won't work if a road is marked as a paved, single file road but in reality it turns out as a bumpy gravel path.

I've been using Komoot long enough to double and triple check the suggested route with other data like TrailView, Komoot Highlights, StreetView and sattelite images. But when I'm planning a 2000km+ route I only focus on the most noralgic points like climbs, border crossings etc.

The solution(s)?

Komoot needs to find a way to verify the data provided by OSM. In regions with a large user base of open source contributers I've rarely been komooted.

One of my ideas is the following: after a user uploads a activity and the app notices you've been riding/hiking way slower than expected on a certain segment (based on the road type and previous performances by you) it'll automatically ask if you want to correct any data.

Also there needs to be some kind of incentive system. E.g. for each verifiable correction (photo evidence?) you gain a certain amount of tokens that can be exchanged for rewards like free premium.

Using AI to verify mapping data with sattelite images, user reports and more could also be an idea. But with the current state of most AI models this will probably lead to even more bad data at the moment.

I hope the Komoot team is already aware of this and is actively working on it. They'll have to invest money in one way or the other. We can and should hold them accountable if they really want to improve the user experience.

The (iOS) app is so hilariously slow and unstable - borderline usable

Hey guys,

not sure if I‘m the only user experiencing this, but with each new feature introduced, the (iOS) app has become worse in terms of performance. Even on the latest iPhone (current iOS, current app version), it takes forever to boot, then literally up to a whole minute to load my own page and oftentimes crashes before I can even access my routes - even in offline mode. Planning is now a nerve wrecking game because you don’t know when the planner will crash, rendering your whole work useless - sometimes even in the very last moment, after you finally hit "save". When it saved a route, you‘re better off restarting the app because the chances of crashing are extremely high afterwards.

The landing page isnt better either. When my feed finally loads, I‘m greeted by a a new bug that mixes up my friends‘ pictures. So when friend A posts something, I see their pictures and profile picture at the preview of friend B‘s tour, sometimes even friend C or D.

When I try to leave a nice comment, add a tip to a highlight or caption my tour, the keyboard is still extremely laggy, copy and paste is broken and the whole app crashes when I attempt to edit text, select a word or jump between letters. This has been going on for over THREE YEARS! Three years where I’m still better off using the web browser to leave comments. Numerous times, I left a note for the developers and nothing has changed. Seriously, that can’t be it.

On top of it, Komoot is such a battery hungry app, even when you‘re just scrolling.
Unfortunately, the web app has become equally slow, laggy, buggy and power hungry that I got back to planning via small phone screen.
Ironically, there‘s still a huge gap between both types of Komoot, the web and the mobile app, lacking a consistent UI.

My biggest pet peeve is that I cannot annotate pictures through the iOS app but have to use the web app for such a simple task. Oh man…

Considering that it‘s simply about the sheer basics, I‘m honestly starting to become frustrated more and more. Before you‘d introduce new features for the sake of it, why not work on finally fixing basic bugs first?!

Edge Explore 2 + Komoot - Map white

Hi everyone,

I have just set up my not EE2 and wanted to use Komoot Premium for using a bike route.

Tried both with Komoot as well as Garmin Maps and only see the route on a white screen.

I only found threads in which the issue was not having Komoot Premium which I have.. does anyone have an idea what I am doing wrong?

Thank you!

Did the latest Komoot update make the app worse for anyone else?

Hi!

Did the latest Komoot update reset anyone else’s settings?

After updating, my app seems to have reverted a bunch of things:

Dark Mode is gone.
Sharing activities looks like it did several updates ago.
It honestly feels like parts of the app have been rolled back instead of improved.

Am I the only one experiencing this?

What I don’t understand is why so many updates seem to make the app worse rather than better. Every time there are some nice improvements, a later update removes features, resets settings, or changes things that were already working well.

Is this a bug, or is this actually intentional?

Android landscape bugs (horizontal view) : 3-button bar won't hide and screen turns off during navigation

Hey, since the recent updates, I have two big issues with Komoot in landscape mode on Android (horizontal view). First, I use the traditional 3-button navigation (back, home, recents). Before, when I turned my phone sideways to navigate, the buttons would automatically slide away after a few seconds so I could see the full map. Now, the right-side bar with the buttons is permanently stuck on the screen and covers the map. I tried all the system settings to force full screen, but nothing works.Second, my screen now turns off and locks itself during navigation. This happens even though I have the "Keep screen on" option enabled in Komoot settings. It used to work perfectly, but it's completely broken since the last update.Anyone else facing these bugs after the latest updates? Any ideas how to fix this?

Bending spoons goes public

Bending Spoons, a holding company for legacy tech brands like AOL and Eventbrite, priced its initial public offering at $29 on Tuesday night, above the previously planned range.

The big picture: The Milan-based company is pitching itself as an acquisition machine, not just an AI-powered software business

Although I'm surprised that bending spoons has worked hard on komoot, especially after initial fears, but the profit shift of a public company tends to be more aggressive. Not sure how I feel about this

Komoot navigating to wrong place?

Here's the most recent example. Coming from Bruz, France I choose Dinan, France city and this is where it takes me - 8 km from Dinan. This has happened a few times on my bike tour this year, don't remember it happening at all last year. Anyone know what's going on? Thanks.

Inconsistent UI labels perfectly sum up my issues with the recent updates

Saved tours is labeled \"Geplant\" (\"Planned\") in one overlay and \"Gespeichert\" (\"Saved\") in another

I have mixed feelings about all the recent changes to Komoot. Some of them are good, while others I'm not a fan of. For example, the offline maps on the Apple Watch have actually saved me from buying a Garmin—for now.

But one thing that genuinely annoys me is the lack of consistency in the UI.

For example, in the German version, the exact same collection of saved tours is labeled "Geplant" ("Planned") in one overlay and "Gespeichert" ("Saved") in another. They're referring to the same thing, yet they use different names depending on where you are in the app.

It might seem like a small detail, but to me it's emblematic of how these changes have been implemented. They feel like they were made without enough attention to consistency and an overall coherent design.

If these actually refer to different things and I'm misunderstanding something, please let me know. But as far as I can tell, they're the same list of saved tours.

The planner you can't trust :(

I generally like Komoot. Even after the BS acquisition, I still think it is a very good tool. But sometimes I just want to log out, delete my account and ask: does anyone actually test this thing in real life?

I have just come back from a few days of cycling in Brandenburg, where twice a route planned in Komoot and navigated on my Explore 2 turned out to be significantly different from the original route I had planned. I'm not talking about a small reroute around a closed path - I'm talking about differences of several kilometres.

Now I am planning another multi-day trip, this time through Flanders, and I've found another example where Komoot completely ignores my intentions and quietly rewrites my route. The same happened in Brandenburg.

Here's a very specific example:

the map shows part of my planned route near Genk. That "hook" in the south-west is there for a reason - it leads to one of the best-known cycling highlights in Europe, "Cycling through the Water" (red arrow):

Before

Now I use the "Plan day-by-day itinerary" feature and simply place one of my overnight stops where the blue arrow is. The result? The entire section leading to Cycling through the Water disappears:

After

As you can see from the coloured waypoints, I had explicitly added those highlights to my route. Yet nothing warns me that Komoot has removed an entire section. It simply decides that I no longer want to visit one of the main highlights of my trip.

I'm an experienced cycle tourist and I've planned countless routes, so I spotted it immediately. But what if this happened to someone planning their first cycling holiday? They could easily arrive home without ever realising that Komoot had quietly removed one of the places they most wanted to see.

The worst part is that I'm starting to lose trust in the planner. I now feel I have to review every multi-day route almost turn by turn to make sure Komoot hasn't silently changed something important somewhere else.

This is already the second longer trip in a short period where this has happened. The previous case was almost identical, on the Tour Brandenburg route near Rathenow in Germany.

I'm also a Premium user. I pay for Komoot because I expect it to save me time and give me confidence when planning my trips. Instead, I end up spending even more time checking whether the planner has changed my routes behind my back. That's _incredibly_ frustrating.

Komoot team - this isn't meant to be a dramatic rant. I know building routing software is difficult and I appreciate your work. But does anyone on the team actually use these planning tools to prepare real multi-day cycling trips?

From a cyclist's perspective this isn't a minor bug. It's exactly the kind of problem that makes you stop trusting the planner.

:(

Saved routes list 'flashing' and jumping

On my Android (12) phone, the Saved Route list 'flashes' and 'jumps', making it hard to read and select a route.

Sorry, I can't upload a video but the screenshot is taken during one of the 'flashes'.

I've made an accurate map legend of the roads in Komoot

There might be different map legends for different parts of the world. This one is the correct version for Komoot maps in Germany. Source: https://www.komoot.com/de-de/help/map

Challenges/Trophies not available in Germany - or am i missing something?

Hi everyone,

I'm a bit confused about the Challenges/Trophies feature and was hoping someone could help.

When I open the achievements section, I only see a message saying that I don't have any badges yet and that I should complete challenges to earn them. However, I can't seem to find any challenges anywhere in the app.

I've attached a screenshot of what I see:

https://preview.redd.it/xvrazoxihd9h1.png?width=874&format=png&auto=webp&s=51a1acef077fdb25db320bb1f02635b76c67b8c5

A few questions:

  • How do you actually participate in challenges?
  • Do I need to sign up somewhere, or are they automatically available?
  • Are challenges only available for certain users or subscription tiers?
  • Could it be that this feature isn't available in Germany yet?

I'm using the latest version of the app and can't find any obvious way to join a challenge.

Has anyone else in Germany experienced the same thing? Or am i missing something?

Thanks!

Merci
