Having spent time immersed in both the Radical Non Dual message and in the more gradual path of Kundalini, I have noticed that they both can hold a false promise. This has less to do with the teacher and more to do with the way our minds work. We always want a system, a way forward and a path. Without some kind of framework, we feel rudderless, there’s more uncertainty. But both paths in their own way have a false promise that isn’t always named.
The Direct Path
The direct path which tends to be Radical Non Duality, Advaita Vedanta or Zen is all about insight. It’s the recognition that you already are what you are seeking. When these insights are really heard not just intellectually but known in the body it can shift some people into a non dual awakening. There can be a sudden shift and recognition of ‘I am that’ which can be a permanent seeing of the truth. This has been really powerful for some people I’ve met, it’s really worked for them! But the direct path can keep you hooked by believing that if you watch the next video the next insight at some point you will get the answer and of course this just isn't true!
The Gradual Path
The gradual path of Kundalini is definitely a more broad and in my opinion interesting path. The benefit too is that you are dealing with all the repressed material in your system and balancing out your whole being before the awakening. But the gradual path can also make you feel as if you are always getting somewhere. If I just turn up to my next yoga class or energy session perhaps I will awaken in six months. If I just do all the right movements or surrender to everything then it will just happen. But the truth is there is no magic wand and no guarantee. It gives the impression that there is a clear path and if I just walk it it will definitely happen.
Whether you’re hoping for the kind of Kundalini awakening that brings enlightenment or the kind that brings a massive re-wiring of the system, neither one comes with an instruction manual. No one can honestly say if you do X, Y and Z your awakening is guaranteed. Awakening is not something you can manufacture by following the right steps. It’s not linear and it moves in its own way. But one thing all the schools of thought seem to agree on is that eventually it is simply down to grace.
