I don't understand the grammar/sentence structures for asl

I followed Bill Vicars recently, and he's been helpful so far, but my issue is I don't understand the rules of asl? If I wanted to sign something like "I need to go to the store today to pick up some bread," I wouldn't just sign each individual word? I've seen videos of people doing side by sides of signing the individual words vs. signing the sentence in asl, and it confuses me. What's the difference between doing that and actual asl? If I signed the individual words, would a deaf person still understand fully? I really apologize if anything I say is stupid, but I genuinely just want to know and be informed. I've tried to download apps in the past, but all of them either require money for lessons and / or use AI, which I don't like. And if they don't have either of those things, they really only focus on teaching individual words instead of sentences and grammar. I was also wondering if there are any other teachers/apps/books you'd recommend? Any help/advice would be incredible. Thanks in advance!
