Hi I’m Mahdi, I was born in the USA and moved to Lebanon when I was 8 years old to live in dahye. Even though it was just 8 years I feel like it made it difficult to adapt to Lebanese culture. I currently work as a solutions engineer in Beirut while traveling on and off to Abu dhabi for work. For my interests I used to be a rock climbing coach, gym, trying new foods, musicals, and I used to be more into gaming/anime in my teens, but now not so much they still hold a special place in my heart though.

I’ve seen a lot of AMA posts on this subreddit, but most of them give no context to who they are or what they’ve experienced in life. So most of the questions are very basic and general like what are you hobbies and favorite tv show. I thought I’d change it up a bit to have more interesting and personal conversations.

​I used to go hiking frequently but took a long break after losing my sister to cancer. I'm really looking to get back onto the trails for some nature and peace, but I've been quite surprised by the current prices. Most organized trips I'm finding are $50 to $90+ per person, which is unfortunately out of my budget right now.

Any tips, group links, or advice on how to hike affordably right now would be highly appreciated.

Good evening to everyone,

Looking at the title, im sure you'd have a thousand thoughts in mind and ideas to give.

I am opening this conversation because i see a lot of my friends and siblings facing loneliness. In fact, some of them were never really in a relationship: couple of those people i mention are not as qualified, but some are, yet all of them are drinking from the same cup.

Personally, i have been in many relationships, but lately things have been very dry. So i would like to (keep in mind, i am no professional) share my insights and observations.

First of all, and most important of all, social media!! At a superficial level, both genders generally have a high and unrealistic expectation of their partner (women more then men). On another hand, a big part of men have started objectifying and sexualizing women more due to the ease of access to pornography (read about how it changes the perspective of men on women). In addition, over confidence in certain women tend to blind them from the truth and keep them immature.

Continuing on the negative consequences of the use of social media, but in a deeper way, they are the following:

-A ruined reward system, due to the fast-paced scrolling, related to a primal instinct our "animal" ancestors had : our primal species had spikes of dopamine when unexpected events happened during hunting; this fact was taken advantage of and implemented in our daily use of our phones

-Addiction: like pornography addiction, social media addiction has similar negative consequences. It severely reduces the attention spam, and drains your mental energy. Studying and working now slowly becomes a burden now.

In a secondary part, our culture promotes a more rigid mentality. Let me explain.

Whether you are in an area that has more open minded people, or people who stick to traditions, or more religions regions, the word "therapy" may result in a demeaning and undermining response. Also, as you would probably agree, people here develop egotistical behavior. These factors make it difficult for one to be self conscious and try to help him/herself change bad behaviors and habits.

Finally, the economical, educational and political situation in our country only makes things worse. Families have lost their siblings, people are over worked and under paid, school systems have only become worse, education not concentrating on common sense and every day life skills, orientation in schools misleading kids, groggy people around you making you also groggy, areas becoming slowly more dry until they are lifeless.

Combining all of these negative factors together, people are just breaking apart. What good of a dating ground can Lebanon be now? What do you think?
