Incidence of diabetes, PCOS, arthritis in lipedema
Women with lipedema commonly have associated conditions like PCOS, arthritis, obesity, thyroid disorders, and sometimes diabetes, but exact numbers vary between studies because lipedema is still underdiagnosed and often confused with obesity. Studies suggest that PCOS and hormonal disorders are seen more frequently in lipedema patients than in the general population, while knee osteoarthritis/arthritis is also common due to altered biomechanics, valgus knees, excess limb load, and chronic inflammation. One prospective study found knee osteoarthritis in more than half of lipedema patients who underwent knee imaging. Interestingly, some studies report that despite higher BMI, type 2 diabetes rates in lipedema may be lower than expected compared with typical obesity, though insulin resistance and metabolic issues can still occur, especially when obesity coexists. Overall, lipedema is increasingly being recognized as a multisystem condition requiring endocrine, musculoskeletal, vascular, nutritional, and psychological support.
