"But... I LOVE HER!!" — A long-time Google fanatic's breaking point with Fi

I’ve always been a massive Google fanatic. I remember using Yahoo search back in the day, switching the moment I discovered Google, jumping on Gmail when it launched, and following every move since—from the YouTube acquisition to the fall of Google+, right up to the latest Gemini drops. Naturally, I rock a Google Pixel.

When Project Fi first launched, I was obsessed. The dynamic multi-carrier network switching between Sprint and T-Mobile (and later US Cellular) was brilliant tech that no other carrier or MVNO was pulling off.

Fast forward to recent years, and this love story hit a wall.

The Lost Pixel & Support Nightmare

A while back, I ordered a Pixel financed directly through Google Fi. Before the package arrived, I had an unexpected legal issue and was detained for a short period. By the time I was released and tried logging into my Gmail, I couldn't remember my password. Because my tracking number was locked inside that inaccessible email, I had no way to track the package, and the phone never showed up.

I reached out to Google Fi support hoping they could help verify my identity with the Social Security Number I used for financing, start a delivery claim, or at least cancel the order. Nothing. Zero help. Because that financing went unresolved on their end, my Google financing is completely burned for future purchases—even though I never received the hardware.

The "Unlimited" Reality Check

Eventually, I created a fresh Google account and activated Fi on an older Pixel. While running on T-Mobile’s network was generally solid, I opted for their top-tier unlimited plan.

Unfortunately, "unlimited" comes with a hard ceiling. Once I hit the data threshold, speeds were throttled to 256 kbps—practically unusable for basic tasks. Getting hit with that throttle during an already stressful, critical night made me rethink the whole service.

Back when Fi offered true multi-network carrier switching across GSM and CDMA, the quirks and limits felt easier to justify. Today, running strictly as a T-Mobile MVNO with severe post-cap throttling, it’s hard to stay loyal.

TL;DR:Long-time Google fan loved Fi’s original multi-carrier magic, but a nightmare customer service loop (lost financed phone + locked account) combined with aggressive "unlimited" data throttling made me walk away.

How are you all feeling about Fi nowadays compared to the original multi-network days? Do you feel the value is still there?

Customer Service??!

Received my 256 GB Hibiscus today. Yesterday I was on the chat with Google for at least 35 minutes or so. I had pre-ordered the phone but only had the trade in value and store credits because for some reason the Google store website wouldn't process my emailed $100 discount code. I contacted customer support yesterday. They promised in the chat, (I showed them the full transcript), that they could apply the discount once I received the new phone. I received it and they promptly told me that they weren't honoring what was promised, apologized a hundred times and STILL lost a sale because I don't do business with anyone who doesn't keep their word. That bad boy is on a FedEx truck back as I type...maybe I'll try a Nothing phone...

Can't decide on colour and size - Pixel 11 Pro

I'm really struggling to decide what to go for this year. I currently have the Moonstone Pixel 10 Pro XL and the matching Watch 4. The trade-in deals are really good plus there is the extra £150 off.

Colour

I try to avoid cases as I don't want to add bulk to my phone, plus Google still doesn't have quite enough market share to result in the range of cases you see with a couple of other manufacturers.

I really don't like fingerprint marks so initially I was looking at the Obsidian for that matte frame, but I'm worried it looks a bit boring.

Canyon I think I can rule out, I don't mind the colour but the frame contrasts too much with the base colour of the phone.

Fog, I sort of wish would pick if it wants to be white or a sort of ice blue.

Olive I quite like but I'm not too sure about the frame. Why isn't it in matte? I wish the frame used was the same as the Satin Pyrite Pixel Watch 5.

Do I go with the 'safe' option of Obsidian? If I do, to get it for launch I have to go with the 1TB as Google UK are out of the 512gb but that's not the end of the world.

Pro vs Pro XL

Since Plus/XL models became a thing, every phone I've bought has been the physically larger variant. A combination of the larger models typically having some better spec somewhere and equating more screen with better.

I needed a repair on my Pixel 10 Pro XL recently and used a 10a as a replacement device and there was a lot I liked about it.

It felt so much more comfortable in my hand due to the size and weight. Honestly if it weren't for the difference in cameras and the fact it didn't have Pixelsnap, I might have kept using it over my 10 Pro XL when it came back.

The battery and charging difference doesn't really both me, I imagine it will be negligible in real world usage. I just need a phone to get me through the day and I'm never far from a charger.

I'm trying to think what I really need a bigger screen for and the only answer I can really think of is media consumption, while I watch a lot of YouTube on my phone it's usually when I'm out for a walk and during those occasions I'm usually listening more than watching and holding my phone vertically (so not using the full screen anyway).

Please help me choose! I don't think I've ever been so indecisive.

I Was Ready to Pre-Order the Pixel 11 Pro, Then Google's Random Discounts Changed My Mind

I was about to pre-order the Pixel 11 Pro, but after seeing random €150-€250 promo codes being handed out to some people while others got nothing, I decided to wait.

The issue isn't that others got a discount. Good for them. The issue is that customers interested in buying the exact same device are being offered wildly different prices for no clear reason.

Instead of creating hype, this left me feeling like I'd be overpaying if I ordered now.

So Google didn't lose a sale to Apple or Samsung. They simply lost a sale because their promotion felt unfair.

Please help me decide between Pixel 11 Pro and Pixel 11 Pro XL

Hey everyone,

I’ve decided to upgrade from my Pixel 9 Pro XL, but I’m torn between Pro and Pro XL.

I’m leaning towards the smaller form factor for better and my main concern is battery life.

I know the smaller model has a smaller battery paired with a smaller screen, but I’m wondering how much of a difference that actually makes in real world usage.

If anyone has experience making a similar jump (or comparing the Pro vs. Pro XL on previous generations), how noticeable is the battery gap day to day?

From what I understand, all the other specs are identical, so battery life is the only deciding factor for me.

Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

GOOGLERS! GREAT JOB! :)

As the title says, last year I was not a huge fan as to how the event was organized, all the corny jokes etc... but to my surprise, I think Trevor Noah did a great job... Seemed more like the "made by google podcast"(https://blog.google/products-and-platforms/devices/pixel/made-by-google-podcast/) hosted by a celeb instead of just corny jokes everywhere....

What does everyone else think!?

I actually enjoyed it..ALOT! :)

GOOD JOB GOOGLERS!
