Kingdom of Hungary 1938/1941

After the collapse of Austria-Hungary and the signing of the Treaty of Trianon in 1920, Hungary lost significant territories, and millions of ethnic Hungarians found themselves outside the country’s borders. In the late 1930s, the government of Regent Miklós Horthy began pursuing a revisionist policy aimed at regaining the lost lands with the support of Nazi Germany and Kingdom of Italy.

In 1938, following the Munich Agreement, Hungary received parts of southern Slovakia and Subcarpathia as a result of the First Vienna Award. In March 1939, after the collapse of Czechoslovakia, the Hungarian army occupied the rest of Carpathian Ukraine.

In 1940, thanks to the Second Vienna Award, Hungary obtained Northern Transylvania from Romania, which became one of the greatest territorial successes of Horthy’s regime. In 1941, after the Axis invasion of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, Hungary occupied parts of Vojvodina and other border territories.

Thus, between 1938 and 1941, Hungary significantly expanded its borders, partially restoring territories lost after World War I. However, these gains were closely connected to Hungary’s alliance with the Axis powers during World War II.
