Leviathan listen through.

First time I've ever listened to it all the way through. Bill and Brent's playing is just fuckin phenomenal of course. Amazing. Trying to decide where to go from here or stay chronological. Once More 'Round The Sun holds my favorite songs. The Hunter has been hitting pretty hard too, though. Where to go from here.

Leviathan and John Huston's Moby Dick

I don't know where else to post this but if you start the album and cue up the movie with about an hour left to go it's the most amazing synchronicity experience. Cheers!

Buncha stupid ass pee wee Herman hair cuts

This band has been lame way before Brent died. But now that hes gone they just look so lame without him. Total geeks. Pretty sure they play that shit on the radio now.

Thinking about signing up for Bill's Patreon.

I've really been digging into Bill's style and trying to figure out the mechanics of how his riffs come together because I love his style. Really inspired me to become a better player. Is it worth it? Anyone know? I want to learn his style best I can.

The ‘New’ Mastodon

Maybe I’m deaf but I can’t figure out what the keyboardist actually does that is so elemental to their sound that he is now a full time member of the band.

While I appreciate perhaps them not wanting to use backing tracks I’m just not hearing what he contributes to their production that warrants the extra ‘paycheck’ if you will.

Case in point, I hear no synth or soundscapes of any import at all on the new track except for one part & where his playing is apparent, it sounds like a jazzy Phish/almost jazz era Spinal Tap detour that sounds thrown in just to showcase keyboards & what sounds like a Nick Johnston style prog riff.

Not to mention, imho, it’s cheesy. The top hat, the overall visual presentation screams more Black Crowes or Guns N Roses & less Mastodon. Needless to say, they appear to be swimming against the current in what I call ‘nostalgia worship’ & clothed in a narrative that ended a long time ago. Not saying they don’t have a future of say, 5 or perhaps, 10 more years BUT this is a different Mastodon.

This is a new species, arguably, altogether. Is it terrible? Absolutely not BUT, to me, there’s a map that either got lost or just simply thrown away. Obviously the circumstances regarding Brent’s departure from the band & ultimately this world, play a large part, I imagine, in their decisions but I fear that Hinds had way more of an anchoring effect for the band then they may be aware of or willing to accept not dissimilar to Cliff Burton’s highly underrated & many times, ignored, role in Metallica. Post Burton Metallica became something very different & quite frankly, by the Black album, antithetical to the original core foundational ethos of the band.

I can’t deny the fact that it appears to be a very similar phenomenon occurring with Mastodon & I’m not sure what the rush has been to replace Hinds & continue to tour relentlessly without pausing & taking even just maybe 6 months to a year to reflect, consider some other possible guitarists & make a really strong comeback.

It’s just simply kind of strange & if ultimately it’s a financial issue due to the fact that they are, in a sense, & ironically, given their moniker, dinosaurs roaming a very different landscape in large part due to post Covid conditions regarding touring costs or the fact that people don’t really purchase music anymore…well…that’s just sad. Just a perspective that’s all.

Mastodon - Show Yourself Live on Conan 2017

This Performance is what got me into the Band.
I was looking for it for years, after it got removed from the Conan channel and was finally able to find it a while ago.

Bill Kelliher lead parts??

I know he did the lead for Sleeping Giant but are there other songs or moments where Billy K does a lead line or solo. Genuinely curious because his guitar work is so underrated and I couldn't find anything about it.

Channeling my inner Billy Butterslacks.

Very recently had an Epiphone inspired by Gibson custom '57 SJ-200 that I had gotten with my tax return from this year and just wasn't playing. It sat in the corner in it's case for a good 3 weeks to a month till I went and traded it for this silverburst custom. All the while I'm not listening to anything acoustic at all and not feeling very inspired to play because of it. Mastodon, Weedeater, Metallica. These are the bands making the rounds for me right now. I've come to the realization that I'm not the deep introspective singer songwriter I want to be and I'm truly a feral riff child that just wants to rip. And I'm okay with that. I love this custom and have been playing some monster riffs on this thing. Been working on learning Motherload and High Road as they're my two favorite Mastodon songs. Riff on my friends.

A Great Mastodon-adjacent sound to scratch the itch before the new record

I came across this great album by Swedish band Vulkan. I was in autopilot doing my thing, and this lyric line stuck out to me:

"Wear his face, walk her bones
There are thoughts that you don't own"

So I checked out the whole album, then the whole discography, and now I'm learning how to play the parts. Became a fan in a day, and I think it scratches that proggy-Mastodon itch.

Brent Hinds Solo Album

a few years ago Shooter Jennings played one of Brent’s solo songs on his show on outlaw country. it was incredible, bluesy and like nothing I had ever heard before. I had the chance to ask Brent about it and he said it was coming out soon. shortly after that he was out of mastodon and we all know what unfortunately happened after that. Does anyone by chance have a copy of that song or know where to find it, or know anything on this album or his unreleased music with WEM or FWAF?
