Passed Chemistry CLEP with a 67 (7 Weeks)

Although I needed a 70 to take care of not just my lecture for Gen Chem 1 and 2 but my labs too, I am still mostly content with how things turned out.

As a preface, I had no chemistry background other than high school honors Chemistry (during COVID, like 3 years ago), so I was pretty much going from nothing (although stoichiometry came a bit quicker). I had ample time to prepare (7 weeks), so I decided to allocate my time studying primarily on Khan Academy's AP Chemistry course for 4-5ish weeks, and the last 2-3 just focusing on practice tests. I was worried about not passing since I pretty much needed it so my schedule won't be terrible next fall, so I wanted to maximize my chances of doing well. Practice was key,

In this regard, I believe Peterson's was pretty useful (you can access it for free through here https://www.gale.com/c/petersons-test-prep -> Adams Free Library), and I also used the Official Study Guide and both REA Practice Tests. Of the other two, I think the REA tests were a bit more useful since it actually gives an explanation for each question, while the official one just dumps all the answers without much else. I got those two from a post from Lex_0407 (shoutout to them), though it has unfortunately been taken down.

For my first Peterson's test, I tried taking the first practice exam with only knowledge of Units 1-4 on Khan Academy, and it did not go very well. I only got 30/75, and I guessed on like half of them, so I proceeded to go through the rest of the units. I then decided to squeeze in every unit up until the Applications of Thermodynamics Unit (9), then I took the second exam and I got 44/75. I then wrapped up the last unit, and attempted the first REA exam, and got 43/75.

At this point, I realized that I wasn't really retaining a lot of the content, so I decided to go back to Khan Academy, and grinded through the comprehensive course challenge at least once each day for the last two weeks and writing stuff down so I would at least get the feel for some of the content of the questions. After doing this and studying the previous exams, I got 56/75 on the third Peterson's test. On the last REA exam, I got 55/75. Petersons was the easiest, REA was moderate, and the official one was the hardest for me. The actual exam was harder than all of them (perhaps I got unlucky).

In total, I averaged around 3ish days per unit for Khan (including the assignments and sometimes the quizzes/tests), and I tried to take notes for everything in a notebook (I wanted to have some insurance that I would pass). I tried to also squeeze in some of the Modern States questions since I wanted to get the free voucher/extra practice. I ended up using googling a lot of the problems and using Brainly since I didn't bother watching any of the videos. Glaser Tutoring Company also covers a lot of these questions if you have trouble finding some. If you are tight on time, you could technically just guess on all of the questions (there are 5 answer choices and you get 5 attempts), but otherwise, I would recommend doing them for practice.

I don't quite remember what most of the topics were on the test, but I felt that there were a lot more wildcard questions than I expected compared to most of the other practice tests (like random osmosis, freezing point, and compound color questions). These were mostly just completely random things, or based off something I already would've known about, but with a strange twist (like a somewhat weird rate law question). My strategy was to immediately do all the ones that I at least had an idea of what to do for, and to mark random answers for the others then flag them so I at least had a random chance of guessing correctly.

Time management was crucial, and I barely had any time left to check over the answers I was confident in. In the second pass (I had like 30-35 minutes left at the start of it), I ironed down 30 questions of uncertainty down to 20 by the process of elimination and reading more carefully, though still I don't think I would've known how to do most of the rest. In this regard, I believe the REA guide would probably be useful for touching up on some of these topics.

Some ideas that I found rather useful off the top of my head for the easier ones were PV=nRT, the gas constants, molarity, limiting reactant, acids and bases (be able to identify strong acids and bases), and an idea of how enthalpy/entropy work and how they relate to Gibbs Free energy. I know the last one is from the last unit on Khan Academy, but it kept popping up on the practice exams and the real one, so I would suggest looking into those topics to get some easy points. There were also quite a bit of electrochemistry questions that I forgot how to do.

The test interface itself was kind of clunky compared to Peterson's. There was only ever one question on the screen at once, the interface looks archaic, and I thought the first question was some kind of practice problem to get used to the software, but it wasn't. The periodic table covers the entire screen and is found within the help menu, so I sometimes had to rewrite the answer choices on my scratch paper to have any idea what my choices were if I needed it. The calculator you have access to is an emulated TI-30XS MultiView, which I started practicing with halfway through my studies so I could get more used to it. College Board says you should practice with the sample on their website, but I found it cumbersome sending a verification link to my email each time I wanted to use it, so I found this random link on the internet (https://mn.testnav.com/client/index.html#login?username=LGN014220188&password=B3FT7JJK), and set a bookmark to it so I could just click on it to sign in.

In the end, I thought I could get away with not studying most of the misc. topics not covered by Khan Academy, but it came back to bite me since there was no way I could've physically made up the last 3 points with what I knew, so please don't made the same mistake I did if it hinges on you getting the score you need. Good luck

Lastly, these are some of the misc. resources I used to study for a few topics (not just the random ones):

Missed a 10% assignment in Freshman Seminar and now the highest I can get is a B!

I missed an assignment worth 10% of my grade in Freshman Seminar (of all classes). Even if I ace everything else, the highest I can get now is a B. I’ve shown up to every class and turned in every other assignment on time. It sucks that one mistake can drop you a whole letter grade. Lesson learned I’m never missing anything again. It’s only a 2-credit class, so a B shouldn’t hurt much. Any tips for making sure I never miss an assignment again? The professor takes zero late work (I knew that for weeks and still tried to stay ahead). I just had a lot going on this week and completely forgot. Feeling pretty embarrassed since pretty much everyone gets an A in this class.

70 on Chemistry starting from 0! Here’s how I did it

So I had to retake this exam because I needed a high score to get credit for 2 semesters of chemistry but I studied for a little over a week each time. I also had 0 chemistry background other than high school chemistry. Here’s what I used:

  1. AP Chemistry videos — Jeremy Krug and Abigail Giordano videos are what I used to learn most of the material. Although AP Chemistry does not cover everything you need to know for the exam, it covers the most important topics (plus some things that aren’t covered on the CLEP that you can skip so look over the official topic list). I preferred these videos over Khan Academy because I wasn’t a fan of the videos made in collaboration with AAMC, but the other Khan videos are great, so pick whatever resource works for you! Jeremy Krug also has great review videos that I watched before taking the exam.
  2. Modern States — Do all the practice questions. If you copy and paste the questions into google you should be able to find video explanations for a lot of the questions made by The Glaser Tutoring Company (this is one example from unit 1) and these are GREAT explanations. Modern States also has videos covering nuclear and organic chem, but I personally preferred these videos from Abigail Giordano for those topics.
  3. Old AP & SAT II Chemistry practice exams — These were the most important resource in my opinion. If you google around for these exams you should be able to find them (I found around 4 pre-2014 AP and 8 SAT II). The great thing about these exams is they cover the missing topics that are no longer apart of AP Chem, so it should help you practice everything you need to know. After taking each exam, I used the “Chemistry Chem” GPT on ChatGPT to go over questions I didn’t know how to do (literally take a picture or screenshot of the question and ask how to do it) and it would give a good explanation most of the time. By the time I took the CLEP I was averaging around 70% on the AP multiple choice and 80% on the SAT II exams.

I hope this helps somebody out! Again, I think the MOST important thing is doing practice questions so you can see what topics you need to work on! And use whatever resources work for you! I personally felt that the old AP and SAT II practice exams were more helpful than Peterson’s, Khan Academy questions, and even the practice exam from the official study guide, but that’s just what worked for me. Good luck!

Made a free math tool for Pre-Calc 11, 12 & Calc 12 because I couldn't find good free practice material

Hey y'all! I built a free site called ApexMath with interactive quizzes, diagnostic tests, and downloadable PDF worksheets for Pre-Calc 11, Pre-Calc 12 and Calc 12. I made it as a student myself because I couldn't find good free practice material that actually gave instant feedback, so figured others might find it useful too.

It's completely free, no signup required: apexmath.vercel.app

There's also an AI tutor that breaks down your math questions step by step, but I have a heavily limited model API key, so if it doesn't work please understand.

Would love any feedback if you try it out, or let me know if there's a topic/unit you wish had more practice problems and I'll try to add it.

I can follow a solved problem perfectly. Then I cover it, change one number, and suddenly I have never seen algerbra before.

Searching how to do math homework mostly gives me more completed examples. I need a method that forces me to choose each step myself. What do you use between “I get it” and actually solving one alone?
