I’m not sure about what home server to choose…

Disclaimer, I’m a newbie in matrix, so maybe something that I ask are too basic. Also, I’m not willing to host a server because it’s difficult, I have a dynamic IP, etc.

I want to build the community for a group of people to organize all our work, similar to Slack or discord. However, if you don’t pay Slack premium your old messages get deleted, and discord is a privacy hell as many of you know.

So I chose matrix, and the first step is choosing a home server for my community and the registration of my username and the username of my colleagues. From what I’ve read choosing the right home server is crucial, as it is very difficult or impossible to change afterwards, and if that server closes permanently, all your content and community can disappear, correct me if I’m wrong.

I need to do the process for them as easy as possible as I’m a bit more techy, they aren’t, and need the process to be as straightforward as possible.

And the first step for them and for me is to choose a server to establish ourselves. A reliable server that isn’t likely to be closed anytime soon, preferably located in Europe, and being private and reliable and and quick and easy to set up with not much hassle (I think usually only an email is needed). And also that supports the latest matrix protocol which I think is matrix 2.0

Of course, the first thought was to just stay in matrix.org server, but I’ve been reading that it is only meant as a demo, and it’s usually quite crowded, slow, and it’s probably going to get worse.

The step of choosing a home server is the one that presents more friction in order to adopt this communication channel (matrix protocol), so here I am looking at the long list shown at https://servers.joinmatrix.org/ and trying to choose one.

Question: if I register myself in one of those less crowded home servers, and open my community there, even if the other users register their domain main in matrix.org, are they going to have a laggy experience, or that just applies to the creator of the community (me)? In other words, do you think it will be easier and more convenient that I open the community on a third-party server and my colleagues get their domain name from matrix.org? Or do we register our domain names on the same home server? What advantages does this provide?

As for the servers, the first one in that list -jonasled- looks appealing for me, as is located in Europe, Switzerland, and looks quite healthy, i’m not sure if the registration will be tricky.

Do you have any recommendation of European server that meets the requirements that I listed such as being reliable fast and located in the European continent? Thank you.

EDIT: I just found in the matrix.com website that there are a few more official servers such as Continuwuity, Synapse Pro, Tuwunnel… are those service recommended for what I’m looking for, or are they as crowded and slow as matrix.com?

This will probably get a lot of hate but it’s worth asking

I used to run a telegram channel for harm reduction , addiction prevention , discussion and substance abuse information for a while, definitely over a year or 2 but it was updated at some point and then my channel was getting deleted every few days if not daily. It was a very helpful group for a lot of people who were active in the group daily.

I have tried signal but other users can see your contacts and they can cause lots of spam issues.

After lots of research and many requests to find another platform to host my channel/ group without violating any TOS, automatic end to end encryption. Matrix is where I keep getting lead to and it seems like a viable option but my group has lost of images , videos and other large post and I read that I’d have to set up my own servers.

How costly would that be and can an average tech user do it or will I need to seek out a professional?

MAS + OIDC: sync user profile every login?

Hi,

Matrix is a great tool with great performance. I like matrix a lot, thanks a lot for building it.

One question: Is there currently any supported way to automatically sync and update user attributes (e.g. email, display name) from the OIDC provider after the initial login?

Sometimes a user gets married and changes their surname. I don't want him to change it separately in MAS. I want to change it centrally in the OIDC backend.

Is this possible?

Is there something like sso.update\_profile\_information: true in legacy Synapse?

Thank you for your responses!
