Did Curry Barker take inspiration from Mirai Nikki/ Yuno Gasai / yandere anime tropes for Obsession?
Am I the only one who feels like Obsession heavily channels yandere anime energy, especially from Future Diary and Yuno Gasai?
I know Curry Barker never publicly confirmed it (as far as I know), but there are honestly too many similarities for me not to notice :
The female lead feels VERY Yuno-coded:
-obsessive romantic attachment
-creepy devotion disguised as love
-“cute” behavior switching instantly into terrifying intensity
-emotional instability
-manipulative affection
-violent possessiveness
-willingness to do insane things for the guy she loves
But what really makes me think about Mirai Nikki is that the dynamic between BOTH protagonists feels similar.
The guy in Obsession reminds me a lot of Yukki/Yuki:
-emotionally weak and passive
-awkward around women
-constantly overwhelmed
-kind of cowardly at times
-gives off lonely/incel-ish energy
-gets trapped in a toxic obsessive relationship he can’t fully control
And the girl basically mirrors the same “I will destroy everything for love” energy that made Yuno iconic.
And then there’s the name “Nikki.”
That’s the detail that REALLY caught my attention.
Considering the name Mira « NIKKI » literally naming the main girl “Nikki” feels like it could be a deliberate nod/reference rather than a coincidence.
Also, I just checked and Curry Barker was born in 1999, which confirms he grew up during the peak era of internet anime culture in the 2010s:
-Mirai Nikki
-Elfen Lied
-Tokyo Ghoul
-Deadman Wonderland etc…
Yuno Gasai was EVERYWHERE online back then:
Tumblr edits, AMVs, creepy anime compilations, “crazy girlfriend” memes, edgy internet culture, etc.
So even if it wasn’t a direct inspiration, I could absolutely see Mirai Nikki and yandere archetypes being a subconscious influence on Obsession.
Am I reaching or do other people see it too?
