5th Gen Babby slightly pissed off by MHFU

First post and consequently rage here, hello. I don't use my Reddit often. Anyway, I've been playing some Freedom Unite over the past few days. As someone who played the freak and back out of Worldborne and a shorter but still plentiful amount of Risebreak (favourite game so far btw, yes I have ADHD) + all of Wilds's title updates so far, and dabbled into a bit of 4U, old gen is a pretty interesting experience. A lot of quality of life is degraded compared to what the series would get later, which is pretty damn annoying (looking at you, breakable pickaxes and bug nets. Whetstones are so common though that I don't mind), but the kind of aged nature of the game as well as all its crustiness and archaisms somehow make for a pretty hard, albeit comfortable game to play. I didn't grow up with Monster Hunter but I did grow up with a PS2 & PSP (which themselves were getting a little dated at the time).

Thank goodness for emulation letting me bind Dpad to right stick by the way, because I have poor dexterity and that weird grip would destroy me ordinarily.

All of that being said, while I'm not very far in yet (Village 3*, did some Hub 3*s with friends), and I like to think myself a decently calm person (ironic for this subreddit), a few things have, indeed, been pissing me off. I usually play GunLance, because I love how it plays in World and Wilds, though I also really like DBs, so I chose to play them over the more basic playstyle old gen Gunlance has.

As fate would have it, however, playing a shieldless weapon is kind of a mistake for me, because I've noticed the monsters in this game are stupidly relentless in their attacks. Coupled with pretty big hit boxes, it becomes kinda fucking hard to commit to any sort of prolonged assault even when the monster is knocked down, because it stays knocked for a grand total of... dunno, 4-6 seconds, a deceptively long amount of which are spent entering Demon Mode and, depending on my proximity, approaching the damn thing before actually using the big damage rush. Then it gets back up in the middle of it or during my end lag and slaps me away unceremoniously to leave me feeling like a deflated balloon.

As such, I've had to half-adopt a kind of Dark Souls-like playstyle where a lot of the fight is spent carefully observing the boss and I only really attack when I'm mostly sure it's safe. Though I say *half-*adopt because I forget to do that just as often because, uhh, I love getting up close and attacking as much as I can. So it's kind of a 'get good' on my part, but whatever, I'm trying. Quite damn annoying though.

Also, the Insector was (were? they're DBs, but the name is singular) worth every bit of grinding for that huge green sharpness bar, but God Damn was it long. You're gonna tell me to get 10 Hornetaur Shells, with all the added inconvenience of getting a carveable Hornetaur when there isn't even a quest with Hornetaurs as the actual target? Yes, Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, I will, but come on.

One specific monster, the old incarnation of Congalala, who I've been told is a classic pleb filter, certainly pushed me to my limit. I tried fighting the 1* hub Congalala on my lonesome, scaled for multiplayer as it was, with somewhat crummy gear and preparation because I completely glossed over Village Quests and I felt like I was one or two hits from carting at almost all times. Up until my last attempt it went quite quickly with me burning through my potions and herbs pretty fast, then I spent inordinately long on the final one desperately hopping from zone to zone looking around for herbs and mushrooms to craft potions while being harassed by the plethora of small monsters in every area (or, what ultimately happened, just eating the damn herbs), until Congalala found me and after a bit of more panicked fighting I deployed a shock trap and tranq bombs in a panic. Thank fuck it was at low health, because I did capture it, and I feel kind of badass for that, but I'd rather not do that again. Damn.

I'm sure I'll get used to MHFU as time goes, but this game does not currently forgive my attention span and play style. This is a bit of a subdued rage as it's written, but believe me that in the moment whenever I get knocked around by something like Daimyo Hermitaur I want to, for those couple of seconds, crunch a wooden beam apart with my bare teeth.

Has anyone else who started with 5th gen or Wilds gone back to play the older titles and felt their ass kicked by them (or some parts of them, at least)? I like this game so far but I can't deny I've got those little grievances.

Wilds is by far one of the most miserable multiplayer experiences I've had

It's a day like any other, and I join a crowded lobby.

I post any kind of endgame quest - 10* or whatever 9* double monster investigation I have saved.

I wait. And wait. And wait... And wait [...]. I swear I could derp around the Grand Hub for 30 mins and literally no one would join. I'm like, okay, I'll do it myself, not a big deal, maybe someone will join shortly after. So I start it.

By the time I'm 7-10 minutes into the hunt (pretty much nearing the end), people start SWARMING in. And they make sure to take their sweetest time to actually get into the fight: sitting at camp doing whatever, travelling across the entire map because they couldn't bother choosing the most convenient pop up camps I had carefully set up. At best, they get to smack the monster twice. Yay, congratulations, great job guys, free rewards for y'all, woohoo best team mates ever. Back to the hub spamming emotes/stickers purchased with daddy's money, I guess.

Then there's the genius joining a double monster quest I posted, like, let's say Seregios and Rey Dau. I go after Seregios first. They go... after Rey. Like, dude, can't you just open the map and check what the host is doing if you're not seeing him around? Splitting the team is detrimental for both survivability AND damage. And maybe I'm using the Hunting Horn so I can't even get to buff you. So much for the "coop" experience. Jesus Christ on a rabid Legiana, it takes no effort to read the room, and this happens way too often.

Not to mention the classic: those joining a 10* quest with unupgraded armour, unreinforced Artian weapon, and a build that might only make sense in a parallel universe. There was this HR150 dude who joined a 10* Jin Dahaad I had posted, carted thrice with insurance during the first two stages, then proceeded to just chill at camp basically waiting for me to complete the quest for him. Like, fuck you dude. And that was just the latest example of a very long list, definitely not an outlier.

I've stopped giving a single flying fuck and started kicking players. No regrets. Also don't complain if you see a quest with manual accept on. That's only one of the natural outcomes when the playerbase is riddled with leeches and all shades of "carry me senpai".

Wilds is such a depressing multiplayer game.

THIS FIGHT IS HOT ASS HOLYSHIT

  • Hate. Let me tell you how much I've come to hate you since I began to live. There are 387.44 million miles of printed circuits in wafer thin layers that fill my complex. If the word 'hate' was engraved on each nanoangstrom of those hundreds of millions of miles it would not equal one one-billionth of the hate I feel for humans at this micro-instant. For you. Hate. Hate. nothing about this fight is fun who the hell made this played this thing, and though "yeah that a great fight there" it might be because im not the biggest fan of rathalos but this feels like the worst of rathalos bumped up to 10000000 try to do anything DIE GET STUNNED POSION POSION FIRE FIRE HELLFIRE FUCK YOU

Seriously fuck whoever decided you need 40 low Rank Guardian pelts to craft all the weapons & only put them on Guardian Doshaguma, the worst monster in the entire game.

I'm trying to finish all the weapons before the DLC releases & I'm almost done with low rank, but I'm averaging 1 pelt per hunt from Doshaguma since they only show up on quest rewards (I'm using the blossomdance & lucky meal for extra too)

I genuinely really enjoy doing my farming by myself & typically only play MP when I'm not working on anything specifically but I'm about to just start searching Guardian Arkveld SOS's since the God-damned cocksucker isn't just available to hunt normally, because go fuck yourself.

As frustrating as the slips of paper are & I loathe the Certificate & Hunter Symbol systems, this is so much worse because I'm not even able to engage in the fucking game while I play BECAUSE ITS FUCKING LOW RANK GUARDIAN DOSHAGUMA. A SOMEHOW EASIER VERSION OF AN ALREADY EASY MONSTER

META HOT TAKE: Every Monster Hunter subreddit sucks Rajang balls now. This one included.

This may as well get deleted or whatever, but the online discourse around MH these days has become depressing as all hell. Feels like there is literally nowhere on this god-forsaken app where a person can discuss the new expansion trailer. The main subreddit is 50% Kushala whining and 50% brain dead takes about how SafiJiva will be the true boss.

Meanwhile this subreddit has transformed into Wilds snark where one single trailer has apparently convinced everyone that the game is dead and that MH is finished. Fuckin what?

BRUH I JUST WANT TO SEE SOME ACTUAL DISCUSSION AND THEORIES INSTEAD OF LOSING BRAIN CELLS EVERYTIME I OPEN AN MONSTER HUNTER SUBREDDIT. Y'ALL MAKE THE YOUTUBERS LOOK LIKE SAINTS AND SAVANTS IN COMPARISON.

HOLY FUCK, I DONT EVEN KNOW WHAT THE POINT OF THIS SUBREDDIT IS ANYMORE. WHERE ARE THE RAJANG RAGES? WHERE ARE THE DEATH THREATS TOWARDS URAGAAN? WHY IS NO ONE SCREAMING TO THE HIGH HEAVENS ABOUT THE CHAOS OIL UPGRADE QUEST ANYMORE??!

THE FACT THAT THE URAGAAN/BRACHYDIOS POST FROM FIVE YEARS AGO IS THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS WASTELAND GOES TO SHOW HOW NO ONE HERE IS ACTUALLY PLAYING MH ANYMORE. EVERYONE JUST WANTS TO EITHER COMPLAIN AND/OR KARMA FARM.

WELL GUESS WHAT? I LIKE WILDS. I FUCKING LOVE RISEBREAK. GU IS A GOODMAN RIOT THAT CELEBREATES EVERYTHING GOOD ABOUT OLD GEN. WORLDBORNE.

And goddamit, I want the old subreddit back where we used to curse the fuck out of shitty hitboxes and not doom post about the "future of the franchise".

If I had a nickel for every time the fandom for a relatively niche japanese game went to absolute shit, I would have two nickels which isn't a lot but my god is it depressing that it's happened twice within the last year or so.

Fuck online gaming discussion. It just makes people depressed.

Remember when this weapon used to be about precise positioning and deep knowledge of a monsters moveset?

Wilds great sword is just offset/offset/offset/perfect guard/offset/offset/monster knocked down, do a true charge/immediately begin to ready an offset upon wake up; and now they are throwing whatever this is into the mix? This weapon is just big longsword at this point.

All identity that the weapon used to have has been sacrificed to appeal to the god damn mainstream audience, that just drool at the fucking screen and pog face whenever they see great sword do something flashy and cool.

Saw the Ascendance announcement and felt nothing

I've been playing the series since I was 10 years old with the release of the first game on ps2.

I choked on my own spit when MH World got announced I was so shocked an excited.

I've enjoyed Wilds but I have fallen into a lot of the negativity around the game too.

I have held out hope for a spin off or something to return to the tone and pace of the older games but we are only moving in one direction.

My unique cozy cavepunk dinosaur fantasy game has become indistinguishable from the anime brawler slop that infests these game shows like Stellar Blade or Wuthering Waves.

I don't think its just nostalgia or me being a boomer. Yet another gimmick gadget mechanic is not going to get us immersed in this world and feel any sort of connection to these maps or monsters.

The blistering speed you are delivered to each monster before mindlessly mashing its face in leaves you having no idea how the last 10 minutes were even spent. I feel like its only going to keep going in that direction.

New Wilds expansion might very well be great, BUT...

Am i the only one who is kinda tired of this trend of "DLC = new gauntlet/gimmick" at this point?

Its like at this point devs at capcom are just allergic to creating anything with an actual staying power like actual new weapons or core systems like mounting etc, but instead here we always have some small new gimmicks that are here only for the duration of this new game/expansion..

And then they will definitelly just ditch it again in next MH game as always..

I dunno, man, again i hope this dlc will be good (it probably will) but like, i just want them to implement something new that will actually stay in further MH games, and not just game-specific gimmick gauntlets/superpowers or whatever..

Stop putting Kushala in EVERY.DARN.GAME

The trailer even started good, it looked genuinely somewhat interesting.

Then why on earth - would they just show Kushala as an "introduction" monster and basically as another selling point next??? I absolutely LOATHE that piece of metallic garbage and wish it would just finally burn alive and never show up again. Stupid, ugly motherfriggin shitmonster and of course the Devs insist thats its in EVERY MAINLINE GAME!!!!

Fuck that!! I dont care if its the "oG eLdEr DrAgOn", I dont fucking care if its "thE fOunDeR oF thE eLdEr dRaGoN SkEleToN" - its STILL A SHITYY ASS FIGHT!!! Fuck Daoras ugly piss wings and his fucking piss winds and his stupid ass Wind aura. STOP putting him in EVERY GAME!!!! It gets BORING!!!! Especially if they make it out like a cool, interesting monster to be excited about in the first announcement trailer for the DLC??? Do they legit not have any other, cool, interesting monsters, so they just have to resort to Kushala over and over AND OVER AND OVER again????

Can it not skip a game for once? Would the world start burning if he skips a game for once?
I dont care if its just "one fight and be over with it", I dont want this thing in the game pool ANYMORE - I dont want it to taint my expedition fights, my optional quest pool and potential interesting event quests that yield cool rewards. JUST PUT THAT DAMN THING AWAY - LOCK IT AWAY AND BURN IT!!!

I dont get why theyd show this off in the first trailer for the DLC - like: "here, BE EXCITED NOW ITS KUSHALA!!!!!!!" ????
Also alongside one of the most boring monsters that were ever created, Lao?????
Do people really love Kushala and Lao THAT much that they've got to show them off as the first DLC monsters like its something truly excited and groundbreaking and their selling point???

TL:DR
Fuck Kushala Daora

This may be the first time i don't buy the expansion of a MH.

I pre-purchase the expansions since "World", and buying the expanded games since "Freedom United".

But Wilds is the first MH that i dropped and I'll wait if Capcom fix some of my gripes before purchasing this one.

The one thing that is a deal or break to me is leaving the Handler at camp. It may sound silly but i REFUSE to play with that tumor following me around.

WHY NO CROSS SAVE

THIS IS SO STUPID. I AM FREE MONEY. I AM HERE TO BUY THE SAME FUCKING GAME AGAIN. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS ALLOW CROSS SAVE BETWEEN CONSOLE AND PC. LET ME TRANSFER MY WILDS SAVE TO PC. MY MATS, MY RANK, MY WEAPON STATS, PLEASE. YOU’RE SO FUCKING GREEDY YET SO FUCKING STUPID. DO I REALLY HAVE TO DOWNLOAD A MOD AND EDIT THE PC SAVE, COPYING THE EXACT SAME AMOUNT OF SHIT I GRINDED FOR MONTHS ON CONSOLE, MEANWHILE RISKING TO GET BANNED BECAUSE YOUR SYSTEM GETS MAD IF IT FINDS OUT I HAVE ADDED TO MY ACCOUNT A BUNCH OF FREE – FREE – EVENT ARMORS? SO GREEDY TO PUNISH PLAYERS THAT DON’T RESPECT YOUR GACHA FOMO SCHEDULE, YET NOT TAKING ADVANTAGE OF IDIOTS LIKE ME THAT ARE HERE BEGGING YOU TO LET THEM GIVE YOU MORE MONEY THAN YOU DESERVE.

I really do not like Kushala lmao

Of all the fucking dragons to bring back, that metal bitch, man

Shit took the joy directly out of the announcement for me

“But Supernova, it’s just a one time fight. Beat it and move on” BUT I DONT WANT TO FIGHT THAT OXIDIZED CUNT IN THE FIRST PLACE

World did irreparable damage to Kushala for me, I can’t like that bastard and ESPECIALLY LUNASTRA if I was paid to

So excited lmao

GS is even faster now I guess

Man, what’s even the point of GS anymore. I thought it was supposed to be the big slow weapon for people who like big slow weapons, I guess it’s just for Guts and Cloud cosplays. I guess I should have seen this coming after surge slash, but I just don’t understand any of it. The point of having many weapons to choose from is so that each player can find something that appeals to them, why make the slow weapons faster? Are they going to make the fast weapons slower? No of course not.

I’m sure someone will say we don’t have full context for whatever this mechanic is and how limited it will be, but we’re off to a pretty bad start. Like having a mechanic that makes Lance throw away the shield, I think that having something that goes against the identity of the weapon like this is inherently a bad idea, regardless of limits or conditions.

I would like to offer my sincerest apologies to MH devs for ever complaining in their perfect games

I'm taking a break playing MHGU right now cuz I'm stuck at fighting Basarios and no, he isn't that hard or anything, I just want to claw my brains out everytime my weapon bounce and his fat ass clogging my entire screen.

Enter HK: Silksong one of the games I'm curious about and trying to get into. I admit it's a great game and very meticulously made. What it is not however is fun. I'm convinced the devs designed the entire game to suck the soul out of the casual player.

It has:

-Common mobs that have aimbot

-Common mobs that beelines to you

-Common mobs that have input reading

-Said mobs juke you and constantly reposition

-They also fly (out of range constantly)

-Bosses that infinitely spawns said mobs every 10 seconds

-You can't clip into enemies cuz they always have an active hitbox (and they come in all sizes)

And so much more

And you know what's the worse of it all? The fucking runback, I don't fear any mobs or bosses in this game. What I fear is dying and having to run all the way back to these tedious long ass floors with platforming/parkour. The time I spent running back has far exceeded the time I fought enemies in this game

Did I mention you die in 3 hits?

There's also a government simulator where you have to pay taxes. You pay for a portion of a map, pay for heal benches, pay for fast travel, and pay for key items.

At least Capcom respects my time

All My Fatalis Pain in One Video

This was a long time coming. I genuinely think Fatalis fight is the best 'dragon fight' in videogames, partly because of how MH works as a game, partly because of how much weight and effort is put into Fatalis specifically.

...

But by god is it full of bullshit. The damage is SO high - you can go from 80% to 0 in phase 1 while wearing the full fatty gear. Divine blessing my ass, it will help you not eat shit as much but it is RANDOM, and it will FAIL in 20-30 minutes it takes to kill this piece of shit, and when it DOES - you're FUCKING DEAD.

"Oh but you have 3 carts" YEAH THATS A BARE FUCKING MINIMUM, THATS A FUCKING RECOMPENSATION FOR HAVING TO DEAL WITH THIS FUCKING BULLSHIT.

The FUCKING FLAMETHROWER visual graphic DOES NOT REPRESENT its hitbox AT ALL. You can CLEARLY FUCKING SEE A CUBIC MILE OF AIR BETWEEN ME AND THE FLAME when I die. Whether it is the problem of visuals OR hitboxes is for you to decide.

The scorched ground slowly nibbling at your health is added SPECIFICALLY to FUCK YOU OVER when you manage to survive with 1 hp left. Its not big enough damage to worry about for 99.99% of the hunt, so you will naturally just FUCKING FORGET that it's there.

Fatty's attacks come out so fucking fast - you can get murdered after making 1 mistake - because whatever recovery animation you're in will not give you enough time to avoid the next attack.

If you down him to 75% hp while AT THE FAR END OF THE ARENA AWAY FROM THE GATE you ABSOLUTELY HAVE NO FUCKING TIME TO REACH AND CLOSE IT. Couldnt you have added just ONE FUCKIGN SECOND to the ONE SHOT timer so that I dont have to watch my character flick the lever and then DIE FUCKING ANYWAY? "Oh but you should control when you are fighting fatalis" YEAH WELL I HAVE OTHER 3000 FUCKING THINGS to manage at every single breathing moment of this fight and 300 split-second decisions I need to make for 30 minutes straight in order to FUCKING SURVIVE, well FORGIVE FUCKING ME FOR FORGETTING THAT I CANT GO TOO FAR FROM THE FUCKING GATE IN THE FIRST PHASE.

I get it's the last, LAST FINAL challenge of the game, and it's intended for, like, people who were grinding Guiding Lands for months and have all of the perfect, optimized builds... but god damn, I don't think I ever had to STUDY for a fucking boss fight ever in my fucking life with how much obtuse bullshit is put into THIS ONE. Skill issue? More like TRIAL AND ERROR issue. More like META KNOWLEDGE issue. More like WASTING HOURS AND DAYS OF YOUR LIFE issue. Oh you can speedrun him in 8 minutes? Show me how many fucking DAYS of your life did it take to get to that level? How many houses you could have built in that time? Fuck that, how many OTHER FUCKING GOOD VIDEOGAMES you could have finished in the time it took you to MASTER this ONE MOTHERFUCKER WITH SHITTY HITBOXES?

No enemy in no videogame every should demand this much fucking time investment. This is not normal and every single one MH head who thinks this IS normal is just fucking soo deep with their thousands of hours of playtime into the Monster Hunter franchise - they forgot what an actual fucking videogame should feel like. It is FINE to like the hard bullshit challenge, as it is FINE to fucking hate it, but at least be FUCKING HONEST ABOUT IT.

And the honest truth is this: Fatalis is KING BULLSHIT. Whether you like it or not, whetehr it hurts your little feelings, whether your self-esteem wavers if I call your beloved game UNFAIR - he is, always was, and always will be BULLSHIT. Whether its okay to have the final boss of the game with bullshit - is another question. But he is. In all shapes and forms. BULL. FUCKING. SHIT.

Killed him solo 7 times now.
