No Tap, Just Go.

What's going on? How are people doing? Dudes aren't even tapping at stop signs anymore. Not even feigning the intent. Just doing a Jesus take the wheel and rolling through the intersection like they are the main character. When are we as a city going to do something against bad drivers who wind up costing us all more in insurance payments via their bad behavior?

Nail Salon recommendations?

I went to this one place on the North Side and they finagled me into getting a dip set, ignored my nail shape request and charged me for Acrylics even though they told me the dip set was cheaper. Language barrier prevented me from arguing about it and I had an appointment so I just took the hit and left. Never again.

Since then I've been going to Chloe Nails in Fairhaven. I've had a few sets that didn't exactly meet my standards for what I wanted but there are one or two artists who are great so I keep going just because I hate gambling.

The thing that makes me not want to go there anymore is the fucking clientele. Tuesdays are my day off so when I go in the other customers are always these horrible retiree women who never shut the fuck up throughout their appointments. I have to sit there and listen to some 80 year old bat criticize what the nail tech with the license is doing, bitch about a single cloth left out, or laughing in my face when I leave the pedicure station in the pedicure sandals they give you. An old man once barrelled in and stormed to the pedicure station without permission, dunked his feet in a tub and barked at the staff "I don't need the vibrator get started when you can." (By which he presumably meant the massage option on the chair.)

Listen. I feel terrible for them but I cannot relax on a luxury service when I'm screaming internally surrounded by entitled old people.

I treat my nail techs well. I tip good. I just need to find a new place I can go to regularly.

Who’s the toughest shucker in New Bedford?

Captain Eddie Dellecese, of the fishing vessel Buckeye, won the Fishing Heritage Center’s second annual Scallopalooza contest, shucking 100 scallops in under five minutes, an average of about three seconds per shellfish

Metal/hardcore/emo music scene

Hey! My friend is moving to NB soon and wanted to know how that scene is and of local bands. He play/guitar and sings and would eventually like to be a part of a bigger thing. He knows how to produce and edit, etc. any leads would be great! He honestly just wants to continue his passion. Thank you!

I created a very detailed map of New Bedford circa 1913

A few years ago, I created a large-scale map of New Bedford by stitching together detailed survey maps from 1913. My goal was simple: I wanted to be able to zoom in and see individual streets, buildings, and points of interest, then zoom back out and see the city as a whole, without having to switch between separate map plates.

The resulting image was enormous, though, and at the time it was never especially practical to use. I finally got around to importing it into GIS software and georeferencing it, matching points on the historical map to their real-world coordinates so the entire thing could be overlaid accurately in Google Earth.

The result turned out pretty cool. As far as I know, this may be the most detailed single, continuous map of New Bedford from that period, rather than a collection of separate plates or maps at different scales.

While it is New Bedford adjacent, The Armoury Wargames and Hobbies has made my list of "no longer shopping there"

As if the overpriced single cards weren't bad enough, this AI Slop ad was received pretty poorly and they still chose to respond in a dismissive way to somebody. I went in to meet some friends last night, despite this, and when somebody else brought it up a shorter, stocky dude said, "you'd have to be r*****ed to not use it..." so I think we're done here.

Looking to communicate with local artists

After the brief talk about the Armory's recent post, I want to see if I can gather a little list of people in the community that would want to make advertisements for people instead of seeing the same AI posters everywhere.

At the very least, I want to have a list to shove in the face of someone who'd say "There's nobody that'd make this!!"

SRTA is having extreme issues with canceled trips. Management needs to adjust, this is unacceptable and this is just one day’s worth of canceled trips.

This is absolutely insane. Other drivers will rant about how it’s management and how nobody stays around because they feel like they have to deal with too much nonsense and disrespect without any proper measures to protect them. Other drivers say nobody wants to drive these routes because they’re too long. I don’t know what it is but this is crazy. Other cities have problems but when it’s like this daily you need to make changes

Today's announcement from Chief Thody:

*** 𝐂𝐡𝐢𝐞𝐟 𝐓𝐡𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐀𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐓𝐞𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐅𝐥𝐨𝐜𝐤 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 ***

New Bedford Police Chief Jason Thody has announced that the department will temporarily suspend its use of Flock Safety technology as it conducts a thorough review of the department’s use of the technology and how to best ensure its secure use going forward.

The department acquired Flock Safety technology in 2024, prior to Chief Thody’s tenure, as an additional tool to support public safety and assist with criminal investigations. Chief Thody is now directing a review of how the technology has been used since its acquisition.

The review will help the department better understand how Flock has been utilized and determine whether, and under what circumstances, the department should continue using the technology in the future.

“Our responsibility is to ensure that any technology used by the department supports public safety while protecting the members of the community we serve," said Chief Thody. "Flock can be a valuable investigative tool, but we also recognize that technologies like this raise legitimate questions about privacy, access, information sharing, and oversight. We need to make sure that if we continue using this technology, we do so responsibly and in a way that serves the public. This and other emerging technologies can have positive impacts on safety, but must be implemented with caution and due diligence."

As part of the review, the department will examine Flock’s use in past criminal investigations and assess the technology’s role in supporting public safety. The department will also explore best practices and work with elected officials, partners, and the public to develop more effective policies and procedures for its use.

The department can also confirm that, based on recent technology audits, internal investigations have been opened, and one officer has been placed on administrative leave. The investigations remain active, and no further information will be released at this time.

The department has begun the review process, and the temporary suspension will take effect this week. The department will provide additional information regarding the future use of Flock Safety once the review is complete.

SRTA Route 204 to 221?

Hello, I'm having a lot of difficulty understanding the bus routes here. I have a mental disability so please be kind. I'm trying to get to the bus stop at Acushnet Ave and Victoria St from the stop that's supposedly at Lord Phillips Apartments, but whenever I try to find the route on Google or through the various SRTA websites, it seems like, 1) the stop outside of Lord Phillips Apartments doesn't actually exist, and 2) the two routes never overlap?

Insight on how to get to my destination would be appreciated, as would how to navigate the bus system here in general. Thank you.

Advice needed, baby Ruffed Grouse

I have a baby Ruffed Grouse in my yard for 4 days now. This bird is all alone, no parents or siblings. I li e in a suburban area and have never seen a Grouse in the 17 years I've lived here. I also have a German Shepherd and I'm worried for this little bird. Most rehabs in my area only accept songbirds. Any advice? I'm in Massachusetts.

Browse/search/find topics in New Bedford City Meetings

For the last few months I've been running a local government meeting site for Fall River. Today, I published a similar meeting site for the City of New Bedford.

Find it at: https://newbedfordmeetings.com

You can search for keywords and topics that are in the city meeting transcripts. I find it very useful to keep up with topics across so many hours of weekly meetings. If there's a particular feature useful to you, just let me know. You can find all of the towns/cities I'm tracking at civicmeeting.net
