Hispanic or Arab Haircut recommendations

I really favor Dominican, Puerto Rican or Arab barbers to cut my hair. I like their style especially when it comes to lineups. The way they use the blade for the line or part is a a nice touch. Any spots like that in Newton or am I looking in the wrong place?

Open Letter to the Mayor regarding Newtonville Station Extended Closure

Hi Everyone - I wrote a letter to the mayor regarding the Newtonville station extended closure and want to urge anyone else who feels strongly about it to do the same.

To:

mlaredo@newtonma.gov
dhanson@newtonma.gov
jmorse@newtonma.gov
NewtonCR@mbta.com
citycouncil@newtonma.gov

Dear Mayor Laredo and City/MBTA partners,

I am writing to express my concern about the planned closure of Newtonville Commuter Rail Station during the upcoming accessibility project.

I support making the station fully accessible, but closing Newtonville for more than two years would create a serious hardship for residents who rely on it. I moved to my current home last year specifically because of its proximity to Newtonville Station which my wife and I rely on to commute to work. Reliable access to the commuter rail was a major factor in choosing where to live, and losing that access for years would significantly affect my daily transportation options.

Newtonville is a walkable village, and many residents depend on the station to get to work, appointments, childcare, and other daily needs. Without a strong mitigation plan, the closure will push more people into cars, increase parking demand at nearby stations, lengthen commutes, and reduce access to local businesses.

I urge the City to press the MBTA to evaluate a temporary Newtonville station or phased construction plan that preserves some rail access during the project. This would by far be the preferred approach and would be the least disruptive for residents.

If a temporary station is not possible, I ask that the City secure meaningful mitigation before the closure begins, including more frequent bus service, better evening and weekend bus coverage, additional parking at West Newton Station, and a commitment from the MBTA to provide more frequent train service once Newtonville reopens.

I support the long-term goal of an accessible, modernized station, but residents should not be left without practical transit access for more than two years. Thank you for your attention to this issue.

Cold Spring farmers market parking

I’m interested in going to the farmer’s market today, but is the parking really as bad as someone told me? What would be a good time to go parking wise? Any tips? I want to go at least once this summer but not enough today to deal with bad parking!

Are there any car inspection stations around that are open after 5?

Or does everything shut down at 5 because of the computer system.

HVAC Recommendations

Hello! Desperately looking for a good HVAC company rec in the Newton/Chestnut Hill area… have been calling around and am getting frustrated that every business I’ve called from google/yelp searching has been an AI operator and not a small business anymore. I usually have no issue with the AI operators and bigger companies but have a high profile client and need to just speak to a real person and I am finding the HVAC companies to all have the same exact script, AI tech and just switch the name of the company. I even spoke with a real tech that mistakenly thanked me for scheduling with a completely different HVAC company because he was actually just a call center for multiple bigger companies in the area…
Any recs would be greatly appreciated!! Our long time contractor is retiring and we need all HVAC services, including a new AC replacement. Thank you!!

Intern looking for a 2-month room/sublet near Needham St (June–Aug, budget ~$1,200, extension possible)

Hi all I'm interning at a company off A St in Needham this summer and looking for a temporary room or sublease for July 13 – September 4 (~8 weeks), with possible extension if it's a good fit on both sides.

Looking for:

  • A private room in a shared 3–4BR house/apartment (happy to join an existing household)
  • Budget: up to $1,200/month, excluding utilities
  • Ideally Newton Upper Falls, Newton Highlands, Newton Center, or Needham — anywhere near the Needham St/Oak St corridor or the Route 59 bus line, since that's my commute
  • Move-in date flexible by a few days, possibly by 10th July.

A bit about me: clean, quiet, working full-time during the day, easy to live with. Happy to chat here or over DM first, do a video call, and provide references.

If you (or anyone you know) has a room opening up for the summer, a lease ending around then, or just wants a short-term tenant while you're away for those weeks, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks!

yoga friends

dumb question but how are y’all making friends at yoga? i go to down under newton and i’ve been to enough classes that a few people nod at me, and i nod back. sometimes we catch each other’s eyes and subtly point a limb to help with alignment, but how do i turn these quiet cues into a conversation? i show up early to stretch and i stay late to shove things into my bag in case anyone wants to say hi, and nobody ever does, so it’s getting to the point where maybe i should just stop waiting and start doing. but what do i even say outside of technical questions like “the way you used a bolster during happy baby was really creative. what does that help with?” or “how did you get your chaturanga to be so smooth?”

tldr i’ve brought pre-made friends to yoga and i typically manage to not murder them with my clumsiness enough to still be friends after, but how do i leave yoga with new friends?

recycling warnings

noticed some slips attached to our neighbors recycling bins last week, and saw some guys in yellow shirts and red bags inspecting bins and leaving the slips an hour before our recycling got picked up today. we got a warning for not leaving takeout containers in plastic bags, which was wild because we almost never get takeout and certainly not in the past month. whats the tea?

🦜 FOUND PARROT at Sawyer Rd, Waltham

We found a parrot near 95 Sawyer Rd. He was dehydrated when we found him, but he’s had water and is now safe and being cared for.

We’d love to reunite him with his family! 💚

If this is your bird — or if you know whose he might be — please comment.

Please share to help him get home! 🙏

Hopeful for place to park RV

Hi! This is pretty random, but I am in a bit of an odd situation and need to start looking. I currently live on cape cod and am pregnant, but a pretty high risk case. None of the hospitals down here can handle me so I have to deliver at Brigham and need to live close by. Wondering if anyone has any tips or suggestions on where I may be able to find someone with property to rent if we buy an rv or camper for me to live in for a few months.
Looking really anywhere within 30 minutes of Boston ideally. I still have some time but putting out feelers to see if newton would at all be a place something like this is possible.
Obviously worst case we will get a rental, I just have a large dog which makes this a bit trickier
Thanks!
