Overview: This sword appears to be a Shinshinto era gimei tribute to Echigo no Kami Kanesada. It features a lot of the hallmarks as the pieces it is based on, but it is clear it is not in the same category as originals. That does not mean this is not an interesting sword however...

Firstly we find it mounted in katate-uchi koshirae. The nakago is long enough that it absolutely could be mounted with a two handed tsuka. Speaking of which, the tsuka does not appear to be "modern" in a traditional sense but was modified at some point and had a quarter panel of samegawa added featuring large emperor nodes. It is clear it was an addition. The koshirae itself is fully functional and Iai\Tameshigiri ready.

Next and probably the most unfortunate part is a false kesho polish that appears to be buffed in by machine. While not etched, it is clear it was not applied by traditional methods. Based on other characteristics of the steel, the "polisher" seems to have followed the original toran-ba temper line. Some very clear nie is present and they sword itself appears to have been a quality forged sword with no critical flaws.

Lastly and possibly the most interesting part is the tsuba. It is signed "Efu-ju Akao Yoshitsugu" and when compared to known rated examples, it appears to be a match. It is possible this could be sent for paper.

As I always say, every sword has a story to tell, and while it may be a quality gimei tribute to Echigo no Kami Kanesada, the unassuming Akao school tsuba appears to be authentic.

Ready to use as a one handed sword, used two handed by smaller hands/frames or, to have a new two handed tsuka produced.

~1400a.d authentic Nihonto/ katana up for grabs

I am planning on listing my Japanese Nihonto. I was thinking around 750 for the price but I have been quoted 700-5000 depending on certain aspects. Any thoughts on this? I am in the United States. Sign of maker is Mitsunaga and he was active in the 1300s. Everything is stock aside from the silk wrap as that didn’t make it this long

How old is this nihonto?

Hello! I recently bought this nihonto and was hoping to get more info on it; it is unsigned/mumei but was wondering if anyone had any clues on how old it may be? The only context I have was it was picked up in Iwo Jima after WWII. I realize there’s not much context here but I really appreciate any help or insight! 🙏

Found during house cleaning

Hello, recently started collecting nihonto and other antiques in Japan, picked up this beauty that was listed as "found during a house cleaning." Was hoping to learn more about it. It's a decommissioned blade (cut just above the Habaki) sadly but I see them sold this way a lot, assuming so that they don't have to fall under registration, and I guess it makes it part of its history now. Was surprised to see the Tsuba and Tang are both signed. The Tsuka is quite dirty/dusty, would love to see some of the former brilliance in the Ito and menuki brought out but looks like the only recommended light cleaning method is a gentle brushing with horse hair brush? Grateful for any tips on care, otherwise I just admire it as it is, the age and grit telling its own story. Thank you for the community!

Orlando sword show question

Hi all - I have a katana that I inherited from my grandfather, who served in Japan in 1945. I’m near Orlando and thought I could bring it to the sword show next weekend, to see if I could learn more about it from the experts there. Does anyone know if I’d have problems bringing it into the show? I keep it in a sword bag, in its sheath.

$20 "Junk" Tanto

Was being sold basically as "junk" status but I thought it had a cool story to tell. The scabbard was sawed into to show there's no knife hidden I assume? Was listed as blade stuck in handle, was able to free it with a little patience and elbow grease. Was surprised to see a small signature on the tang, hard to make it out though. Neat pickup for the collection, especially for $20.
