Fantasy Name Generator App for DMs, Writers & Worldbuilders
Hey fellow DMs, writers, and worldbuilders,
I built a fantasy name generator app that I originally made for my own RPG sessions.
If you want to check it out, here’s the link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.avaton.fantasynamegenerator
The idea was to solve the usual “we need a name right now” problem during campaigns and writing sessions, without relying on repetitive or overly generic generators.
What it currently does:
• Generates names from syllables (so results feel more organic and less “random list”)
• Thematic filters (Nordic, desert, elven, dark fantasy, etc.)
• Large database of names, nicknames, and house/clan names.
• Generates tavern/inn names, regions, territories, kingdoms, etc.
• Generates spell and skill names.
• Lets you save favorites and generate multiple results at once.
It’s basically meant to cover the full naming layer of a fantasy world, not just character names.
I’d genuinely appreciate feedback from people who actually run games or build worlds. Especially if there are naming categories you always struggle with or wish existed (I’m still expanding it).
Also curious: what kind of tools or features do you feel are missing from the RPG/writing community that you’d actually use? I’m looking to build more tools around this.
Thanks in advance, and hope it helps someone’s next session.
Story idea: The Platinum Record
I had this idea for a story a few years ago that I never actually made into an actual campaign or session. It was originally intended for numenera.
The title is the Platinum Record
In real life, back in the '70s as part of the Voyager space probe. Included in the probe was a golden disc. It contained instructions to whoever finds it on how to play the record and it contains music and pictures from our culture at the time. It contains a sampling of languages, including humpback whale song. It also contains a message of peace and hope for a better future from the secretary general of the UN at the time.
In my story, between now and the birth of the ninth world, the probe and the disc were recovered. The salvagers, a cosmopolitan crew of many species added more, refurbished the disc, and appended a message on how to add more content, and encouraged future finders of the relic to add their own hopes and dreams for a better future and records of their ordinary life.
The disc went through thousands and thousands of future civilizations, people's and social orders and by the time we arrive in the time of the ninth world, it is made of platinum. It is once again on earth, now called the ninth world and the locals can't understand it but know it is rich with information about the past. A total asshole warmongering psycho, the queen of vralk or one of her agents believes, falsely, that it contains plans for a weapon. And it's trying to get a universal translation cypher to understand it. She will probably destroy it in anger if she finds the truth so the story is a race to translate this strange message from the past, and who they should share it with. It's priceless but not strictly useful. I was going to play a recording of the UN secretary-general message once unlocked, with a description of each subsequent bearer recording their troubles and achievements and hoping for a brighter tomorrow. And if the players achieve their objective, they can launch it into space for the next world to find.
Where to Start?
I backed the Amber Archive so I got all of the current system as part of my reward. After I read Discovery and Destiny where do I go next? It's a ton of content that comes with the game and with 20+ adventures, supplements and other material its hard to know what's worth jumping into for a campaign.
Question about the rewards
I backed the amber archives with the cypher corebook as an add-on. I will receive the corebook when it is released (late summer, according to the campaign page) or just when the amber archives are released (late 2026 according to the campaign page)?
Cipher System Comprehensive Modification
Hey, I'd like to get feedback on the mod I've developed for cypher
