Drinks and Karaoke in LES 08/19/26

Afternoon all,

Hosting weekly karaoke at Boho karaoke lounge on orchard Street in the LES. We tend to get decently sized crowds so we just hang out in the bar area for the open karaoke and since it's not too packed we usually get to do a couple songs each. It's one song ticket per drink or you can get just a song ticket for 2 dollars. Please note that the bar is cash only! There is an ATM there with pretty low fees if you need to withdraw money.

Wednesdays starting around 8:30 PM in LES

If you're interested please feel free to shoot me a chat! We've had a couple of redditors from here meet the group and it's always been a good time.

Mix of men and women all in our mid 20s-30s. All super friendly and inviting

Philosophy Meetup - The Concept of Enlightenment - Sunday, Aug 23, 1:30 PM @ Work Café Santander (Williamsburg)

Hi NYC philosophers,

We're organizing another meetup for anyone interested in discussing philosophy and connecting with like-minded people in the city. Here's the plan:

🗓 When: Sunday, Aug 23, 1:30 PM

📍 Where: Work Café Santander, 85-87 N 6th St, Williamsburg

For this session, we'll be reading the chapter "The Concept of Enlightenment" from Dialectic of Enlightenment by Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer (read it here). Adorno and Horkheimer criticize dominant articulations of Enlightenment rationality, arguing that that mastery of nature as ascribed by much of Enlightenment thinking break down into old forms of barbarism.

You can also follow us on Instagram.

If you're interested, drop a comment below. Looking forward to meeting you all and hearing your insights!

[Sun, Aug 23rd] Short story group discussion: "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" by Tolstoy

Hey all, I'm organizing a book club discussion on the short story "The Death of Ivan Ilyich" by Tolstoy! It's a quick read at 50 pages, about 2-3 hrs total, so it's a low-commitment read if you have time to check it out this week! A little about me, I'm 31m, software engineer, love reading Russian literature, so far mostly Dostoevsky and Nabokov, and this is my first Tolstoy work.

The short story is one of Tolstoy's most famous works and widely regarded as one of the greatest novellas in world literature. In short, it's about a terminally ill man coping with the realization that he wasted his life chasing career, exploring what it means for a conventionally successful life to end up as a meaningless one. Historically, it's Tolstoy's first work after "Anna Karenina" following his own midlife crisis of struggling with suicide over the meaningless of his own successful life in the face of death.

I highly recommend the Pevear and Volokhonsky translation, which is widely regarded to be the most faithful to the original Russian and is preferred in academic settings. You'll see there's 2 options, a novella and a short story collection; both are identical.

We'll be meeting this Sunday 2pm at Fort Greene Park. If the forecast doesn't clear up by the weekend, I'll update the location to a nearby coffee shop. Lmk if you'd like to join and I'll send a Discord link! I'll also share some reading notes later for the discussion.

Greenpoint Food Grinds & Good Times – Sunday 8/16 1:30pm

Hellllooo alll!!!! Foodie Fam is taking over Greenpoint for an afternoon of tacos, sandos, donuts, pasta, seafood, Polish food & questionable amounts of makgeolli!!! The best part? We share everything and split the costs, so you can try a bunch of different things without ordering 15 meals for yourself. Come hungry, bring your appetite, and steal a bite from someone else’s plate, Its heavily  encouraged ;)

We are starting off at Bersi Ethiopian, then making our way through some of Greenpoint’s tastiest spots, with plenty of time to hang out, meet people, and enjoy the neighborhood along the way.

And no stress in joining at the beginning or staying until the end, feel jump in whenever you can, grab some food, and hang with us for as long as you want. There is an already existing group!

Meet up - Bersi Ethiopian Restaurant  - “Buunni” means coffee in Ethiopian, where coffee is traditionally treated as a social experience

Try: Traditional Ethiopian Bunni coffee to start the crawl. If you haven’t tried it(well I haven’t either so kind of excited)

🐙 Mariscos El Submarino – Yes their special is seafood tacos, yes that’s what we are going for. But they offer so much more amazing dishes.

Try: Gonna have to go with the Kraken taco once again. It looks and tastes as amazing as it sounds.

🥪 Taku Sando -  Taku Sando makes its signature Japanese milk bread, or shokupan, fresh in-house every day.

Try: Grab the Katsu Sando for crispy pork tucked inside ridiculously soft Japanese milk bread.

🌮 Taqueria Ramirez - Taqueria Ramirez built its reputation through taco pop-ups before becoming one of Greenpoint’s most talked-about taquerias.

Try: Get the Al Pastor taco straight from the trompo and add a little pineapple for the sweet-and-savory combo.

🍩 Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop -Serving donuts since the 1950s, making it older not old enough to witness the fake moon landing(jk)

Try: Hunt down the Red Velvet Donut Volcano if they have it, because a donut with “volcano” in the name deserves attention.

🍝 Forma Pasta Factory - Forma makes its fresh pasta right in Greenpoint, so your noodles are basically going from machine to plate.

Try: Split a fresh pasta dish of the day so everyone can get a taste without committing to a full pasta coma.

🦞 Greenpoint Fish & Lobster Co – 1^(st) Family of Greenpoint’s seasfood scene, they over 100 years of fishmongering experience.

Try: Split a New England Clam Chowder or Lobster Roll for a proper seafood pit stop.

🛹 Karczma (Or Retro as an alternative)- recreates the feel of an old-school Polish farmhouse, complete with traditional décor and atmosphere.

Try: Order the White Borscht in a bread bowl and, yes, eat the bowl when you're done

🍶 Hana Makgeolli – Last time around we went 99 sake bottles around the

Wall. Lets beat that Founded in 2017 and became New York’s first Korean rice-wine brewery.

Try: Makgeolli flight to sample everything!!!

[Club Sandwich] 3rd Anniversary Celebration at Defonte’s + Other Half, 2:00pm This Saturday (8/15)

Hello again sandwich people! This Saturday (8/15) at 2:00p, Club Sandwich will celebrate its 3rd birthday! And much like the second, we are going to go back to where it all got started on that historic day two years ago: Defonte's for an epic sandwich and Other Half for epic brews. ...and yes, there will be birthday hats!

We've visited many sandwich shops since our first meetup back in 2023, and Defonte's has remained high on our list. A number of members haven't yet tried their sandwiches, so why not work in a repeat? It was an awesome time the first time around and it's certain to be just as good the second time.

And for those of you who haven’t joined the Club, here’s the deal... Club Sandwich is a casual, monthly, social meetup designed to try new sandwiches, explore new neighborhoods, and meet new people. We’ve been doing this (almost) every month for 3 years now and it’s consistently a chill way to meet new folks, break some bread, and get into all sorts of funny business. It’s relaxed, low-key, and tasty.

If you want to join us this Saturday, drop a comment to be added to the group chat! And if you're already in the Club Sandwich Discord, you're all set.

--------- DEFONTE'S IS CASH ONLY. BRING CASH!----------

📂 The Plan
* 2:00 - 2:15p — Arrive at Defonte's. CASH ONLY!!!
* 2:15 - 2:45p — Order sandwiches
* 2:45 - 3:00p — Walk to Other Half
* 3:00 - 5:00p — Eat sandwiches and drink tasty beverages (yes they have non-alcoholic options!)
* 5:00 — Who knows, maybe another bar or two??

🥪 The Sandwich
Defonte's is an institution in the sandwich world. There are no shortage of YouTube videos waxing on about their importance and deliciousness. For example, here is one from the NYT.

The FAQs
Alrighty, for those of you who have not attended a Club Sandwich meetup, here are a few questions that often arise…

* Is Defone's cash only? YES! BRING CASH if you plan on getting a sandwich.
* What is Club Sandwich? It's a monthly, low-key meet up for anyone and everyone to check out new sandwich spots, visit new neighborhoods, and meet new people. Who doesn't like the simplicity of a great sandwich, conversation, and exclusive club?
* Does Club Sandwich only to sandwich-related meetups? No! We also do non-sandwich events like hikes outside of the city, club nights, concerts, picnics, apartment hangs, and more… Once you’re in the club and in the Discord, you get access to all the fun happenings among club members.
* I can't make it at 2:00p, but want to show up later. How will I know where you are without the Discord? Drop a comment on the post and we will send you a link to the Reddit group chat, which is another way we communicate with attendees.
* May I bring my friends? Yes! Club Sandwich is for everyone as long as they're nice, welcoming, and respectful to everyone.

[Take 2] Starting a small film discussion club in Manhattan — first meet is Aug 23 at Madison Square Park

Hey all. Some of you might've seen my post about this last week before it got taken down (fair enough, I missed a posting rule). Reposting properly this time.

My friend and I are starting a low-key film club. The idea is simple: everyone watches the same movie beforehand, then we meet up and actually talk about it. No watching together, no lectures, just good conversation with people who like thinking about movies a little more than "that was fun, 7/10."

We're keeping it small on purpose, somewhere around 8 to 10 people, so it stays a real conversation and not a crowd where half the room never gets to talk. My friend and I are both in our twenties, and honestly we're hoping to meet people around the same age, just for the vibe and chemistry of it. Not a hard rule, but that's the crowd we're building for.

For the first one we just picked a movie ourselves to get the ball rolling: Whiplash. It's popular, easy to find, and pretty much everyone has feelings about it, which makes for a good opening discussion. Going forward though, the plan is for the group to have a real say in what we watch. We'll do votes so it's actually shaped by the people who show up, not just us.

Details:

When: Saturday, August 23, 2 to 3:30pm

Where: Madison Square Park (we'll sort out a specific spot closer to the date)

What: Watch Whiplash beforehand, come ready to talk about it

If you're interested, drop a comment or DM me and I'll send the signup link (I'm capping it, so first come first served). Would love to build something that actually sticks around.

FREE hot dogs - Join our weekly progressive political discussions at Drinking Liberally : Thu, Aug 13 - 6:30pm @ Rudy’s Bar and Grill, Hell’s Kitchen

Drinking Liberally is a weekly social meetup where people get together to talk politics, have a drink (and a free hot dog), and hang out. We started gathering at Rudy’s Bar and Grill in Hell’s Kitchen in 2003, and it is still meeting there every Thursday.

What:

Casual political conversation and socializing. We talk about local and national politics, share perspectives, and get to know new people in a relaxed, friendly environment. People of any political persuasion are welcome as long as the conversation stays respectful and kind. The group tends to attract people left of center, but it is not limited to them.

When:

Thursday, August 13

6:30 PM to 8:30 PM

People often stay later if the conversation is flowing.

Where:

Rudy’s Bar and Grill

627 9th Ave, Hell’s Kitchen

We meet in Jack’s Backyard at the back of the bar. There is a Drinking Liberally sign on the wall near our tables. You can also ask the bartender for Drinking Liberally and they will point you in the right direction.

Cost:

No cover and no minimum.

Drinks can be purchased individually.

Rudy’s provides complimentary hot dogs with a drink purchase.

It is customary that the first person to arrive buys a pitcher for the table and that people who enjoy the pitcher will take turns returning the favor later in the evening.

Who should come:

Anyone interested in politics and good conversation. Despite the name, this is not just for liberals. We have progressives, social democrats, DSA members, resistance era liberals, and people across the political spectrum who want thoughtful political discussion.

Accessibility and notes:

21+ only since this is a bar.

Jack’s Backyard is handicap accessible, though the bar can get crowded at times.

Our tables are reserved so you will have a place to gather even on busy nights.

Hosting a couples bagel run (8/16) and a salsa social (8/26) for people wanting to meet other couples

Hi everyone! My bf and I started Couples Social Club because we found it hard to make other couple friends and find fun stuff to do together in the city. So we created something that helps with both without having to go through an awkward first hang!

We just had a rooftop pickleball and matcha social a few weeks ago and it was so much fun. A bunch of couples came out, we had a local matcha brand come and serve drinks, and it was a great way to meet people and do something fun together. If that sounds like your vibe, we've got two more coming up:

🥯 Couples Bagel Run (Sun 8/16, 9:30am): a casual 5k along the west side highway, all paces welcome, then a delish bagel spread and mingling with new friends. $20/couple.

💃 Salsa Social (Wed 8/26, 7pm): in Greenwich Village. A professional instructor will teach a 1-hour beginner class, then drinks and dancing the rest of the night. No experience needed! Early bird $50/couple.

Bring your partner, and another couple if you've got one. RSVP links in the comments. Hope to see some of you there!
