I REALLY Like Of Montreal!

Hello. My name is Andrew. Or OfMontrealFan12345678910111213141516. (my favorite number is sixteen because its 4x4 and 4 is just 2x2)

Are you only supposed to post serious things here? None of my friends like Of Montreal to my level, so I May just talk here. I mean, after months of my endless chatter, they Of Course have listened to Of Montreal, but I don't even get a slight Chuckle or Understanding Grin or even a Shut Up!! when I say I am Suffering For Fashion (or some other song title I could possibly slip into normal speech, its hard to think when i play songs with lyrics but i Cannot stop listening to Of Montreal) Lets see uhh.... Yeah, Man, She's a Rejector.. Wow.. Haha.. No? Just me? Alright...

I Would Be Sad From My Isolated Interest State, But I Am Becoming Increasingly Elated Due to an Unhealthy Exposure to My Captivating Fascination !! (which, of course, i photographed)

(^ In Normal Words, this means I'm coping with being lonely by listening to of montreal almost obsessively)

anyways i really think i will cut it off here, PLEASE DO NOT KILL ME!!

I am adding nothing to the discourse, but "When" and ESPECIALLY "Already dreaming" are really good

While I loved (most of) Lady and Freewave, I am really really excited for aethermead. "Already Dreaming" is probably straight up my favorite song released since "Sophie Calle" in 2018. Don't get me wrong, "Soporific Cell" and "Hmmm..." were bangers (maybe the latter is more solemn than partyyyy but ykwim and ykiyk), but I miss the more "straightforward" of Montreal.

Kevin is such an interesting artist, because there is nothing stopping him from writing a normal top-40 style chart topper. (Though, False Priest and Ur Fun, two more conventional albums, prove that Kevin wron't stick to just pop ;) )

Maybe "Already Dreaming" is boring to some. It certainly lacks the "holy shit where is this fucker going" of Lady, Freewave, and all the way back to Skeletal Lamping.

Let me tell you what I'm listening to though: "artsy pop trash"

1.) Underscores: U, Wallsocket, Fishmonger

2.) aya: Hexed (seriously listen to it. Tell me "off to the ESSO" is not a fucking banger)

3.) Kate NV: Room for the Moon (mostly just "Telefon" though. It was my comfort track during Lockdown)

4.) of Montreal (of course lol): TrashI ("Aries equals good trash" is my only go-to from that album, seriously, seriously, seriously underrated), Hissing Fauna, False Priest

5.) Videoclub: *Euphories (*I genuinely promise I'm not an incel (how this shit got coopted by the "black pill" weirdos is beyond me, because I feel like identifying with such obvious pop music involves some capacity to feel joy, which I have the thought the "blackpill" folks have thrown out the window, but that's a whole different post and I'm 9 drinks deep), but "Armor Plastique" and "En Nuit" are straightup bangers)

I have made many posts about how I desperately wished Kevin would finally just focus on an album for once, and I finally think we may be there. While Lady significantly upped the polish on the instrumentals, their vocals suffered. Seriously, the guitar on "Rude Girl" is so gorgeous, but Kevin comes in like they're on a busted AM radio. Come on dude, you're too talented not to get that shit mastered air tight. "Soporific Cell" thankfully did not have this issue.

Though, while aethermead seems to be shaping up to be straightforward, I do hope that it incorporates more weird chord changes. That's always been a staple of of Montreal. I think "Pi$$ Pi$$" from Lady is one of the best tracks for that.

Anyway, I did not realize how intoxicated I was when I started writing. Who is preordering this track? Who's gonna be in Louisville? Who else drank too much locally brewed """"rose""" cider?

Edit: Who is going to be in Louisville?????

I always thought the line in "Like a Tourist" was "We dance the otter buffet" until only recently...

When I discovered that it's "Auto-Da-Fe". Lol. The total pleb that I am, I had no idea what this word meant until I looked it up. Makes much more sense than my version. And to think, my mom always told me I'd never learn a thing from rock & roll!

White Relic/Irrealis Mood

Just found this album. I love False Priest and Hissing Fauna, and Sunlandic Twins. Been listening to those albums since a bit after they came out. Got the urge to check out recent of Montreal, and I’ve listened to White Relic once, and it slaps so freakin hard. I hope more of their music I haven’t heard has that digital tone and vibe.

But any suggestions if I liked this album? of Montreal or not. Like the part I like about the album is that sound that’s almost Crystal Castles like at times.

Curious if any longtime fans feel underwhelmed by the new tracks

Maybe I’m in the minority here but I genuinely do not understand the overwhelming praise for these new of Montreal tracks. They sound like rough live-in-studio demos to me. Where are the synths? The weird production choices? The layered electronic textures? The psychedelic maximalism? The grooves??

This feels like the third chapter in the Lousy with Sylvianbriar / Aureate Gloom era — which, for me personally, are easily the least interesting albums since Aldhils Arboretum. And look, I’m not expecting another White is Relic or I Feel Safe with You, Trash every single time. Those albums are unreal lightning-in-a-bottle records. But these new songs just feel so… plain.

Honestly, I have literally heard AI-generated slop music that sounded more musically interesting than these tracks. At least the AI stuff sometimes accidentally stumbles into weird textures or hooks. These songs just kind of sit there.

One track is mostly Kevin saying the F word over a sleepy live-band groove, and the other honestly sounds like something I’d skip halfway through. I can’t imagine putting these on for my kids the way I would Skeletal Lamping or Hissing Fauna or Paralytic Stalks or Innocence Reaches.

The weirdest part is that instead of making me excited for the new album, these singles are making me excited for the album AFTER this one or maybe the next one after that. Like… okay, guess I’ll wait this era out and hope the next reinvention is more up my alley.

Not trying to rain on anyone’s parade. I WANT to love new of Montreal music. I’m just honestly surprised that everyone seems ecstatic about tracks that feel this stripped down and uneventful. Curious if any other longtime fans feel the same way or if I’m just completely out of sync with where the fandom is now.
