HBS Trash no more

Just received an e-mail that Waste Management will be taking over the HBS Trash accounts, which makes me sad.

Are there any actual local alternatives, other than having to use the giant WM company that seem to polarize opinions?

Apex perhaps?

I stumbled across this book from another post recently that completely changed how I think about food.

We’re so used to fridges, supermarkets, and next day delivery that I honestly never stopped to think about how people actually ate before all that existed. This book is basically a collection of old recipes that were designed to last months or even years without refrigeration. The same kind of food our great grandparents (and great great grandparents) relied on.

What surprised me most wasn’t even the recipes, it was the mindset. Everything was about making food stretch, using what you had, and not relying on systems that could disappear overnight. Reading it made me realize how dependent we are now compared to even a couple generations ago.

I’ve tried a handful of the recipes so far. Some are definitely outside my normal rotation, but a few were genuinely good and oddly satisfying knowing they’d keep without power or fancy storage.

It’s less of a cookbook and more of a little history lesson disguised as one. Made me appreciate how resilient people used to be, especially when it came to food. I wanted to make this post as a bit of a shoutout to the creators for putting it together and the person who shared it here a couple months back (I couldn't find the old post to go back and comment).

Here's the website I bought the cookbook from, it's a pretty niche book so I don't think it's available on any mainstream platforms - survivalsuppers.com

Lost Cat spotted on Cottonwood Drive

Saw a mostly golden with maybe some black hair hanging out near the highway overpass on Cottonwood dr. The hair was maybe a little bit on the longer side, Im sorry i couldnt grab a picture. They had greenish eyes as well.

They came towards me when i stopped to try and call them, but then got spooked by an animal noise nearby and ran past a fence I couldnt get into.

The poor kitty is def thirsty and panting. Pretty hot out there today.

Ill keep an eye out but if anyone is missing their cat, just a heads up.

Mature Tree Removal in Open Space - Parker Jordan Centennial Open Space

I'd like to ask for some additional voices speaking up about the Vermillion Creek Development. SPECIFICALLY as that development is encroaching into the Parker Jordan Centennial Open Space (PJCOS).

If you travel the Cherry Creek trail near the Cottonwood Neighborhood, you may have seen construction fencing in a large area of the Tranquility Trail of the PJCOS (second photo). They are planning to remove (as I've counted) at least a dozen mature trees for drainage improvements. See all the red in the first photo. There will also be a realignment of the trail there (old trail in bright yellow of first image). Essentially, that trail will no longer exist as it does now...which is exactly where I took the third photo of this post.

You are likely aren't aware of these changes and ecological impacts because:

  1. There's no signage out there to say what they are doing!

  2. Public notice for these improvements were lumped into the Vermillion Creek Phase 3 Virtual Community Meeting (VCM). There was no town hall and all the attachments to the VCM explicitly or visually imply that any changes to the Open Space are separate (see 4th photo, just has a hint of development over the property line).

I've only learned what I have by calling all over the place.

Anyways, I'm doing what I can with my professional knowledge on the logistical and permitting side to call attention to this (including contacting the state and county as related to Floodplain Development and tree mitigation). This includes the developer complete documents related to the Endangered Species Act (there are known bald eagle nests in the Cherry Creek floodway).

I'd greatly appreciate anyone calling the City of Centennial and the Southeast Metro Stormwater Authority (SEMSWA) to express your dismay with this project in the Open Space and the skirting of public notice specifically for the Open Space changes. Please make our collective voice heard to attempt as best we can to either halt construction or ensure proper mitigation occurs.

If anyone is an arborist or biologist, I'd further appreciate your professional expertise in getting this issue elevated.

O'Brien Summer Camps

I love to see our parks being used, however, O'Brien was completely mobbed today when at least 10 school bus loads of summer camps were dropped off all at about the same time today. Camps from Littleton Public Schools, Cherry Creek, Aurora and DougCo. Is there any type of organization to when these camps can use the Town of Parker Parks or is it just a free for all? Seems like more of the latter. I saw one toddler demolished by a kid on a swing and other littles getting stuck on park equipment from the sheer volume of kids there. Kind of a bummer and somewhat dangerous if you have little kids and are trying to enjoy your local park.

Landscapers

New to the area. Anyone have recs for landscaping? The backyard is dirt and would like to put some sod in for the pups. All of the places I've contacted me either ghost me, think I'm an idiot, or support the current admin. Thanks.

Missing Cat - Parker Area

Hey everyone,

My cat Steve ran away from my home while i was on vacation. He’s an older tabby with really short legs. He’s a small cat probably under 10lbs and he’s still has a lot of zip to him.
We’re in the Parker area near Jordan/Cottonwood. He’s wary of strangers but very friendly once he’s comfortable. I think he’s been gone for a few days now based on the info I’m getting from the pet sitter. If you have any information please please please shoot me a message on here. Thank you so much Denver community!

Why do you choose to live here longterm?

To note: not judging anyone, just curious why people see Parker/Littleton/Castle Rock/etc as permanent living.

I moved to Parker back in 2011, my family found a good deal on a home and settled there for just under less than a decade. Colorado was the next best state for us to move to, job market was better for my dad, etc. Financially and outdoor rec wise that we enjoyed, Colorado made sense back then. Are we suburb people? No, but of course made it work and my dad found what he could afford and was convenient, not ever making it a permanent home spot. Once my sister and I graduated high school, we all eventually left Colorado on our own terms.

I recently had a work trip in Denver and decided to visit some friends there that were raised in Parker/Castle Rock from childhood and still live in the general area as adults.
Sure the education is decent (not as great as some make it seem, but that’s more on the American school system), you’re near the mountains, but the town has nothing to it. It’s a suburb hellscape.
Also, getting to the mountains every weekend to ski isn’t worth it because of how bad traffic is, or the snowpack isn’t good. Denver is fine, but also not a place I’d live longterm. The current water crises was enough to drive my dad out as he works remote/partially retired.

If you choose to live here longterm or permanently, why? Do you like the general suburb living and standard meh stores and lackluster of good restaurants? The lack of culture (sorry but I’ve never experienced more racism and bigotry than I did when I went to high school and some of college here compared to the other schools I had been raised at in the PNW, which yes pnw has its issues with racism). I’m in NYC now, been here since college and been working here, but don’t mind the occasional visit.

Experiences with Montessori Schools in Parker?

We are planning to send our daughter to a Montessori school when she is around 2.5 to 3 years old. She is currently attending a traditional daycare that we really like, but we feel that the Montessori philosophy aligns more closely with our family values and how we approach learning at home.

There are three Montessori schools in the Parker area that we are considering: Renaissance Montessori Academy, Parker Montessori Educational Institute, and Mountain View Montessori.

We have tours scheduled at all three schools over the next few weeks, but I would love to hear from anyone who has firsthand experience with any of them. What did you like or dislike, and how was your child’s experience overall?
