Finally got on board

So here visiting Japan for work and went to Isetan department store in Shinkuku. Had been eyeing the brand for a bit. Can’t resist a deal though. Brand new from AD in the store, ran be 26k USD after tax and I had to pull the trigger on the PF Tonda GMT in Verazsca. The comfort is unparalleled. The GMT function hiding is quite luxury at its finest. If anyone is in the area, they had a pink dial as well and the new chronograph where the hands hide (only one left).

Let’s see your Tonda fits!

Howdy folks - about to join the PF club. I took the straightforward approach with a pfc914-1020001-100182 that’s on the way to me at this very moment. One thing I dig about the reference is its style versatility; reasonable people could disagree on if it’s a GADA but it can go pretty far and do a lotta things…sartorially too.

Hop on the hype train I’m on and share your best Tonda outfit? What can I be wearing with this beauty?

Parmigiani Fleurier Kalpa — A Truly Unusual Design

Parmigiani Fleurier Kalpa Grande Qualité Fleurier. The distinctive tonneau-shaped case, curved lines, and unusual proportions make this one of those watches that looks completely different from the usual round cases.
Definitely a watch with its own character.

Should I swim with it?

I know it’s normally water resistant up to a 100m but since the crown is not screwed down I’m curious to know if someone did swim with a Tonda gt?

Toric Movement

There was a request for macro shot of the Toric movement, so here it is.

TL;DR: Some fancy-pants words around what Parmigiani has done to make the time-only movement in the Toric really stand out. Enjoy the photos.

The macro shots highlight specific details of the PF780 movement that should be admired. Along the way, I’ll point out proprietary elements of the movement that only a fully integrated manufacture like Parmigiani (with Vaucher) can achieve.

  1. The overall architecture of the movement is rather unique, with the linear form of the three main plates, the double barrels, and the escapement along with their respective bridges. This is a nice way to make the movement stand out in a proprietary way, as you don’t see a time-only movement designed this way.

  2. The main plates are made from rose gold and decorated with a fine double-guilloché pattern called Côtes de Fleurier. This pattern is proprietary to PF. Besides PF, it is worth noting that F.P. Journe is one other manufacturer that uses rose gold for the movement plates in place of traditional brass. Patek, VC, and AP tend to use rhodium-plated brass for their movement plates. I’ll let you draw your own conclusion from that.

  3. As with any brand at this level, the edges of the main plates feature extensive anglage, with hand-beveled and mirror-polished chamfers. However, an argument has been made that many brands today make movement design decisions to help make hand decoration and finishing easier to achieve.

  4. The case screws are proprietary with a double-hole design. This means only PF has the tooling to open the case back to service the watch. Romain Gauthier is another manufacturer that comes to mind that also produces proprietary screws. This level of attention shows off the depth of PF’s in-house capabilities.

  5. If you look closer, you will find the baseplate with a sandblasted finish. You’ll catch a glimpse of this near the escapement and below the double barrel. Most other manufacturers will finish this with a circular pattern called perlage. In fact, the Tonda movements have this decoration on the baseplate. This shows the extra effort PF has gone into the decoration of the PF780.

  6. Finally, Michel Parmigiani’s signature can be found on every Toric movement. I like that this as a personal seal of his approval.
