How do hands-on learners tackle theory and memorization

Hey everyone,

I’m currently enrolled in the Per Scholas cybersecurity bootcamp and could really use some advice.

I am very much a practical, hands-on learner. When I’m actually doing the labs—like getting my hands dirty in Kali Linux, TryHackMe, or HackTheBox—the concepts instantly click for me. But when it comes to sitting through lectures and trying to memorize the heavy theory and terminology from my notes, I hit a brick wall. Traditional note-taking just isn't working.

Does anyone have advice or recommended resources for someone who learns best by doing? How do you map the dry theoretical concepts to practical exercises so they actually stick? Any unconventional note-taking methods that worked for you during your cert prep or bootcamps?

Thanks in advance!

Per Scholars New Jersey campus

Hi I’m thinking about attending PS for IT program. It’s only three months, free and they pay for the certification. However, I’m wondering if it’s worth it.

I need to attend Monday - Friday 9am -4pm and still work to pay bills while setting aside time to study and do homework.

I know it’s some free resources like professor messer, free comptia books etc. But would love advice from those who did either option.

Advice from people who went to PS and those who self studied. Which option would you recommend for someone who’s tech savvy but spent the last decade in healthcare.
