Which driving school should I choose in Qatar? Looking for advice before I register.

Hi everyone,

My company has offered to help me get my Qatar driving licence. They’ll handle the registration, and the cost will simply be deducted from my salary in monthly installments, which is a great help.

However, I’ve recently heard that getting test/training slots has become very difficult. Some people told me that there are only around 5–7 slots which get accepted for DL per day at some institutes. And, also the waiting time can be quite long. I’m not sure how accurate that is, but it has me a bit concerned.

My company is likely to register me with Dallah Academy, but before I agree, I wanted to ask people who have gone through the process recently:

  1. Which driving school would you recommend and why?

  2. Is Dallah a good choice, or would you suggest another academy?

  3. Are there any tips to increase the chances of getting earlier class or test dates?

  4. Is there anything I should do or avoid during registration to make the process smoother?

For context, I already have a valid Indian DL, if that makes any difference.

I'd really appreciate hearing about your recent experiences. Thanks in advance!

Hi 👋 I’m flying back home next week and have a long (17:00-02:00) layover in Doha. Any recommendations on what I should go do? I really don’t want to just sit around at the airport.

places to sit and wind down

hey Reddit Qatar! can you recommend places for me to sit down, read or paint that are not that much crowded, noisy or expensive? I know I could go to a park but I mean something more cozy, indoors (in case it’s too hot early night). I went to a cafe in Msheireb downtown once but I spent almost $50 but the vibe is so nice and the place is cute. I don’t know, give me your best recommendations, help your girl out. I’m thinking of exploring everything you recommend. It’s just me, my books and my headphones looking for sit somewhere and get lost in the pages.

(Please make it metro friendly) 🤓 thank you!

Guidance Required!

I travelled to 2 ministry of interior offices last week to do my newborn childs Qatar ID. I was advised it could be done on the spot but unfortunately that was not the case.
I was informed by both (Pearl and Souq Waqif) to do the application of on Metrash and it’s been about a week where the application is under process.
As I am due to travel end of next week I have been informed by my employer to go to Wadi Al Banat MOI immigration department Building Gate 11 to speak to a captain and try to get it approved on the spot.
Has anyone else gone through this method as I am getting contradicting information of what to do. Can please someone help!!!!!

Why do many thobes use polyester instead of cotton, linen, or wool?

I'm trying to understand why polyester is so commonly used for thobes and similar garments.

I've also been reading up on breathable fabrics. From what I've found, linen is often considered the most breathable and coolest-feeling option because of its loose weave and moisture-wicking properties, while lightweight cotton is also a strong choice for comfort and airflow. Polyester can be made to dry quickly and resist wrinkles, but it usually isn't as breathable unless it's a specialized performance fabric. Based on that research, linen is generally the top recommendation for maximum breathability, with lightweight cotton as a close second for everyday wear.

So I'm curious:

Why is polyester so widely preferred for thobes?

Why don't more people choose cotton, linen, or wool instead?

How do people keep polyester thobes clean and prevent odour, especially in hot climates?

What fabrics are actually best for summer wear if the goal is breathability, comfort, and freshness?

Are there any advantages to polyester that make it better than more breathable materials?

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who wears thobes regularly or knows the practical reasons behind the fabric choices.

Scammers

I think I just came across a new type of rental scam today, so I thought I'd share it in case it helps someone else.

I've been looking for a villa to rent and found a 6-bedroom villa listed for 8,000 QAR. It honestly sounded too good to be true, but I figured I'd at least check it out.

I tried calling the number, but it was switched off. So I messaged him on WhatsApp instead. He replied straight away, sent me all the details, and even shared a video of the villa. Everything looked completely normal.

I asked when I could come and see it, and he said, "Anytime. Just let me know when you get there."

So I went.

The villa was actually open, and I was able to walk around and inspect it myself. It really was a nice 6-bedroom villa, exactly like the video. At that point I thought, "Great, I'll take it."

I asked him what the next step was, and that's when things started getting strange.

He told me he was in Saudi Arabia and would be back in about 10 days. He asked me to send my details so he could prepare the contract, then asked me to transfer a 2,000 QAR deposit to reserve the villa.

I told him, "How can I transfer a deposit when I haven't even met you or anyone from your side?"

He replied, "Don't worry, just send the deposit. Once we receive it, we'll give you the keys."

That immediately made me suspicious.

I kept browsing rental listings and, a little later, I found the same villa with the exact same video on Mzad—but this time it was listed for 12,000 QAR by someone else.

I asked him about it... and he instantly blocked me.

So yeah, he was most likely trying to scam me out of 2,000 QAR.

Just a heads-up for anyone looking to rent in Qatar: even if you're able to view the property, it doesn't necessarily mean the person you're talking to is the owner or even authorized to rent it out. Don't send a deposit unless you're completely sure who you're dealing with.

I genuinely don't understand why people do this. Instead of trying to take someone else's hard-earned money, why not just earn your own honestly?

Dont mind me.. i used chatgpt's help to write all of this...
