“It certainly feels like a mistake at the moment. United hoped Benjamin Šeško had overcome his shin problem, but its recurrence is a major concern.

Michael Carrick and director of football Jason Wilcox were satisfied with the squad’s attacking options and would even have considered selling Joshua Zirkzee to fund a move for a left-back.

Marcus Rashford, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha can all play up front, but Rashford doesn’t want to, Cunha hasn’t been effective in that role, and Amad’s injury leaves United short of options on the right, limiting Mbeumo’s flexibility.

Danny Welbeck seemed like an obvious option, and I’m surprised United didn’t pursue him. The squad now looks short of a natural striker.”
