Holding Down The Fort

Hello Everyone,

I've been in this subreddit for a few months now and noticed that the creator and sole moderator hasn't been active on Reddit for over a year. To ensure this sub has an active moderator, I've assumed mod responsibilities in their absence. Hopefully they come back one day, but I hope to grow the sub and help bring in more folks that appreciate the written word.

Please feel free to reply to this post with any comments or suggestions you may have. I'm going to be updating the rules but welcome any input into helping our community here thrive.

Here's to the dozens of us who still love reading well thought out, and well designed magazines made by humans, for humans.

Thanks!

Mage Magazine - Free Digital Gaming Magazine

Instead of Modern Magazine Monday's, we'll instead be accepting submissions to be included on an approved modern magazine list that will allow monthly posts.

As an example, here is my ad-free, free digital (pdf) gaming magazine called: Mage Magazine.

Link: https://thethirstymage.com/

It's written by a group of long time gaming journalists as a passion project, no ads or monetization. The magazine includes reviews of both retro and modern games, features, retrospectives and more.

If you write a gaming magazine, feel free to send a modmail outlining your magazine and why it should be included. The magazine must be high quality and written by humans without AI assistance. Once on the approved list, you will be permitted one post per month.

1993 Game Informer: arcade bravado, Super NES secrets—pull up a magazine chair

1993 Game Informer: arcade bravado, Super NES secrets—pull up a magazine chair

This carousel feels like you just cracked open a July/August 1993 Game Informer and found the good stuff hiding between the pages. One moment you’re chasing tips and “press loves it,” the next you’re staring at a Sega Seal of Quality like it’s a golden ticket. It’s all that mid-’90s game hype—cartridges, scores, and big promises—served with that exact magazine-era confidence.

1993 Game Informer: SNES Halloween picks & “Bottom Line” verdict nostalgia

Remember that Game Informer vibe—thick pages, loud colors, and verdict-ready reviews that felt like they were waiting for your thumbs? This September/October 1993 issue dives straight into Super NES excitement, from Mortal Kombat clean-up talk to Street Fighter II Turbo hype, plus that unmistakable Halloween & gore energy hanging in the margins. Flip through and you can practically hear the era’s magazine ink and arcade arguments all over again.

Did you have a favourite gaming magazine in the 90s?

For me it was Sega Saturn Magazine, followed closely by CVG. I miss going to the newsagents each month and looking for the latest issues!

I realised the other day, that back when I was a kid in the mid to late 90s, the newsagents was actually one of my favourite places to visit at the shops. Checking out the latest gaming mags, MAD magazine and comics was a real treat.

Insane yard sale pickup

Found a lot of Nintendo power guide with over 60 magazines in it plus a few consumer guide magazines as well. If I bought it all myself without my bro picking out a few strategy guides( super Mario 64 and links awakening)earlier i be laughing but I’m glad I picked these up

1993 Game Informer: “The Bottom Line” rated chaos & arcade gold

This carousel feels like you just flipped open a 90s Game Informer issue—where every page promised a new kind of obsession. One minute it’s Pac-Man squaring off with ghosts, the next it’s Sonic and a CD track that’s “totally awesome,” and then the review box hits you with a hard score. No pop culture fog—just blunt hype, big headlines, and games that begged you to play tonight.
